4chan Declares War On Snow
With all the recent hacktivism in the news, Anonymous has decided to take on a new and powerful enemy: snow. On Sunday the group announced that it will "do everything in its power to shut snow down by attacking the Weather Channel and North Face websites, boycotting outerwear, and voting for the sun as Time’s 2010 Person Of The Year." I'm sure there are a lot of people in Minneapolis right now that would wish them luck.
Wish these bored 14 year old nerds luck? Whatever. We eat snow for breakfast. (the Dome does too)
Damn this is just dumb, I feel bad for even giving it attention by posting here.
Wow the winter went by so quick.
Stargate wasn't THAT bad.
Alright, Atlantis was, but still...
Winter is really depressing

I think this is the first of Anon's crusades that I don't support.
I mean, it's snow!

The best bet would be to sign a petition for the abandonment of the winter olympics, that way we'd be rid of winter all together by removing the need for it.
The term "hacktivism" has been around since at least 1999, in the hacker/cracker e-zines.
I had a CD full of various e-zines, including the whole collection of PHRACK/CDC/LoD at the time, it was certainly on the CD.
(Anonymous Coward because I've forgotten my password and I CBA to try to recover it)
...on that stupid word, "Hacktivism?"
The problem is, even if the person putting it out does it as a joke, there are bound to be people who believe it (./) and others that will help carry out the attacks, unaware the whole time.
I have 3-2 odds on Anons.
Non impediti ratione cogitationus.

If it weren't for the Wikileaks nonsense, anonymous trolling for teh lulz wouldn't be news. I'm interested to see how the publicity plays out here, but this is exactly what /b/ is about, random nonsense. So fuck snow, and let's get on with the news.
I live in constant fear of the Coming of the Red Spiders.
Atlantis wasn't bad thanks to Dr McKay!
They found something useful to do.
Seriously, with all this Wikileaks bullshit I was getting worried Anonymous might have forgotten about the lulz.
I've never forgiven him for that piece of shit "Informer" song.

Snow is great if you like to ski, sled, or partake in other wintertime recreation that require it. It is nice to have (but not too much) in December for that effect it gives with the Christmas decor. But come January and February, it gets to be annoying as it turns to icy and an ugly yellow/brown from thaw cycles. Come March and April, it damn near angers many people since it slows the warming of spring. Many times in the past few years in South Dakota, we have gotten big snowstorms in the last couple weeks of April. That late snow does not stay around long but sometimes accounts for a large portion of the total inches of snow for the whole winter.

isn't this just a roundabout way to say that they don't support "The Cloud"?
Going outside at this time of year is a pain because it's cold. Here's a really weird random question: If we had (hypothetically) unlimited energy/power (and I do mean unlimited), could we effectively, cheaply and practically heat all our streets from 0 to say 24 degrees c, or would it be too noisy, costly on parts, or otherwise impractical?
Specifically, I was either thinking of some giant fan assisted heaters (which are probably too noisy), or more likely, a giant network of underground heaters which continually pump out heat upwards so you feel it above ground. I realise it would have to be a lot of power, but I'm not sure how much (I'm guessing several megawatts for a typical 100 semi-detached house street?). Living in that kind of setting is another tiny step towards a nicer place for all imo.

Nooo... After living in Pune, India for ten years, I've just moved to New York City, and snow is one of the things I'm really looking forward to. I miss cold winters! And so far, it's been sandal weather since I got here three months ago...

"I'm sure there are a lot of people in Minneapolis right now that would wish them luck."
As someone who lives in the Minneapolis area, I wish them no such thing. However, if they want to pick up some shovels and take this stuff away I would have no objection.
“Hacktivism”. Never heard the word before today and now it’s on every second post.
I really hope it doesn’t catch on. I cringe every time I hear it.
Without Hacktivism we'd never get to experience the joy of Hacktivo. Thats right, now you'll never miss another poorly coordinated DDoS because you're too busy actually accomplishing things. Just set the Hacktivo to record your favorite troublemakers and play back the lulz when YOU'RE ready to watch, on your schedule.
> I really hope it doesn’t catch on. I cringe every time I hear it. It’s not catchy or clever, just irritating. It’s right up there with “blogosphere” and “*gate”. Not as bad as "To the cloud!".

Stop giving these children media attention?
Man, welcome to the fucking nineties.

Seriously. No, I'm not kidding, I think this is one of the smartest things that could be done.
Why?
Because they just reduced themselves back from "a political activist platform" to "14 year olds with too much time on their hands". Before you consider the ego, consider how the powers that are (tm) will react to either.
Whether they are one or the other, what do I know? I only know that being the latter means that nobody will seriously try to bring you down, while being the former just might get you too much attention from organizations whose attention is something you don't want if you want to continue living, working and having fun in peace.
We used to have a Bill of Rights. Now, with the rights gone, all we have left is the bill.

That denial of service attack is working pretty well, even if will take a bit more time to make snow to basically dissapear. Outside 4chan, that DDoS attack is called Global Warming.
If anonymous really wants to achieve anything with this, they should simply reorganise the earth's tectonic plates and move more landmass to the southern hemisphere. Land tends to exacerbate bad weather, which is why we enjoy relatively stable weather here in the south. So go on anon... give the earth a facelift, else, you'll just make alot of noise and nothing will change. Or if you blame human influences, get involved in climate change. That would impress even me.
Maybe they're just satirizing the US reaction to wikileaks...
Cracker was the original term for what people mistakenly call a hacker. The problem is the less computer savvy people saw the word hacker (coined as someone who writes code, as compared to cracker, someone who cracks systems) and thought it sounded cool so they used it in the media. It's not our fault that your still using the wrong word.
It's on par with using intensive purposes instead of intents and purposes. Completely the wrong word, but fools keep saying it anyway.
Seriously anyone at anytime can post anything they want about anything, are you going to fill idle up with a mirror of it all?
Scraping the bottom of the entertainment barrel, are we? 'Snot funny, even to /b/tards; nothin' against it, it just lacks enough humor to qualify as funny. And while it probably wouldn't make a dent, I can half-imagine some little script kiddie saying, "omg /. bork'd rulz wun n tew? imma chargin mah lazorz!" and targeting /. w/ his LOIC...

Also, slightly OT, but hopefully funny enough to warm the mods' cockles: Mitchell & Webb @ 2:35
David Mitchell: I was just going to say that my eye was caught by this whole scandal in America.
Robert Webb: Oh, the scandal in America. Yeah, that is interesting. That must be the biggest scandal since Watergategate.
Mitchell: Watergategate? Isn't it just Watergate?
Webb: No. That would mean it was just about water. No, it was a scandal or "gate", add the suffix "gate", that's what you do with a scandal; involving the Watergate Hotel. So it was called the Watergate scandal, or Watergategate
Mitchell: But doesn't the term "gate" meaning scandal, come from Watergate?
Webb: What, take the last 4 letters of a previous scandal, or hotel, and add it to all future scandals? That can't be the system..
Mitchell: I think it is.
Webb: Well what if there's a scandal about water? What do you call that?
Mitchell: Well you'd call it waterga...ah I see what you mean. Aquagate?
Webb: It's not great is it?
Back on topic: I fully support Snowgate.
Atlantis wasn't bad thanks to Dr McKay!
Agree, SG-1 was great fun, a classic, Atlantis was ok fun, Stargate Universe is boooooring. I blame BSG.
We're already winning the war on Snow here in New Zealand.
...anyone can claim to be the spokesman. If you have some modest Photoshop skills and an ax to grind, go ahead and declare war on something. Don't like the word "hacktivism"? Speak out as Anonymous and threaten to take down news websites. Pick a topic and have at it.
The cool thing is that with enough of these proclamations from "Anonymous" no one will be able to tell the real from the fake. Well, unless you go to 4chan/b/...in which case you can distract them with boob shots.
I was thinking of protesting against fscking cold myself. Even if it doesnt snow here ... good for anonymous.
Read radical news here
in my list of reasons not to take 4chan seriously. They've done come stuff I like but this is just retarded.
... thinks this is just about the dumbest thing I've read in a while... The snow is awesome, it was great seeing people working together over the weekend to help each other shovel out, and now it's just beautiful to look at... The worst part of the whole weekend was trying to avoid the little econo-boxes whose owners didn't have a lick of common sense...
Forget it, they live in it all day every day for 8 months out of the year. Describe what its like to live in constant freezing temperatures and you might get through to them and describe what its like to have total sun all the time and constant, sweaty, sticky, shitty heat at night. Without a break. Never being comfortable, never. Its like a constant, nagging, pain in the ass that never goes away.
Python: 'And then suddenly you have a language which says "we're all stuck with whatever the whiniest coder wants".'
Still funny to this day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y1da7FqyTw
looks like I found another humourless slashdaughter that felt the need to -1 me. Tis okay, I live to comment another day.
Yes but if the person who cracks a system also does it by writing his code, you take the hac and you ad the ker from cracker... no wait you take the crac and add the ker from hacker?
...AND the 4channers infiltrate and start mayhem on /.

Is 4chan really behind this or did one person post a thread and the news assumes it is their collective will?
I trust this as much as a wikified press release
You know, everyone I know likes SGU. But then again, they all disliked SG-1, because it was campy to the point of cheese, but without actually playing to it. It was like... campy, but pretending to be all serious.
I mean seriously.... I've seen like 5 episodes and there is always some mad super villain wearing a giant metal helmet shaped like some Egyptian hat living in an underground fire lair dungeon, orbiting a planet who is about to explode.
Sometimes the super villain changes. They always get captured 15 minutes into the episode, and then rescued 42 minutes into the episode and the hero is always ignoring prudent advice and doing something extremely dumb, yet he always gets lucky and nothing happens to him.
Shit, where is the tension in that?

Stargate Universe is boooooring. I blame BSG.
No kidding. Stargate Universe is essentially House + BSG. It's just sad how much the Universe writers shamelessly rip off those two shows.
When they stop screwing around with the "background music montage" (aka House, aka "We don't know how to write a real ending for the episode so we'll just play music instead") and when they stop with the mind-numbing, shaky-cam filled "character-driven episodes" (aka BSG, aka "Writing interesting science fiction is hard, let's write a soap opera instead -- oh and shaky cam is hip and stylish!"), then the show isn't that bad. That said, I cannot believe how bad overall the 2nd season has been -- the subplot of Chloe turning into the alien thing has sucked up at least 15 minutes of every episode and it has contributed almost nothing to the plot since it was first mentioned.
It just seems like too many shows forget that developing good characters does not mean writing soap opera episodes. You can have interesting science and even some action while developing characters. BSG was very guilty of missing the ball on this one -- halfway through season 3 they should have just renamed the show All My Cylons.

War on snow. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. There is no snow.
Privacy is terrorism.
seriously.... I've seen like 5 episodes
So... what's your opinion worth, having seen five episodes out of ten seasons?
Don't thank God, thank a doctor!
It's the 90s again? Oh shit! That explains why everything seemed so Xtreme when I woke up today. TIME TO SET CAPS LOCK TO 90S MODE!
Everything will be taken away from you.
Correct, but I believe you missed the "here, here" vs "hear, hear" pun ;)

Back when the term "hacker" was first used to refer to people doing illegal activities as well as legal ones (yes, the meaning is fully agnostic, crackers can be hackers too), "cracker" only referred to a white male living in a trailer park in the southern US. It was later "retroactively defined" because "hacker" was getting a bad rap (from movies like Hackers).
Your analysis sounds like a pal of mine who hated it because they it was all about them traveling between dimensions, and that is just a remake of Sliders. You apparently missed the very premise of the show, and that likely plays a huge factor in your opinion of it.
If the shit stinks, I'm not going to keep smelling it in the hopes that the smell improves some time in the future.
I'm just noting that as a general principle, that's not specifically about Stargate. I've never watched any of it.
No, there's a tiny group of people who really wish they could force hacker to mean one thing, and a much, much larger group of people who use it to mean something else. Guess who wins?
Stargate Universe is boooooring. I blame BSG.
No kidding. Stargate Universe is essentially House + BSG. It's just sad how much the Universe writers shamelessly rip off those two shows.
Actually, I always thought "Stargate Universe == Gilligan's Island + Star Trek: Voyager."
Seriously, all the main tropes originated from Gilligan's Island. Our castaways set sail that day for a three-stargate tour. A three-stargate tour. They get to have weekly guest stars thanks to magic rocks that have them exchanging bodies like the mad scientist episode of Gilligan's Island. They re-invent stuff that the Professor usually made out of split coconuts and bicycle pedals. Col. Young has his naive little buddy Eli and mopes about feeling responsible for stranding them all there.
Unfortunately, it still uses a lot of Star Trek plotions (reverse the cross-coupling power adapters to move all power to the shields!) and Chloe is no Mary Ann.
Of course I still watch the damn show. I have to admit that I really like the utterly amoral character of the Professor ... I mean Dr. Rush.

The Ballad of Stargate: Universe
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this secret planet
Through the eponymous plot device.
The mate was a failed Stanford kid,
The Colonel brave and sure.
The VIPs set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.
The bombing started getting rough,
The tiny base was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The civilians would be lost, civilians would be lost.
The ring sent them to a ship out there beyond the Milky way
With the Eli kid
The Colonel too,
The turncoat who screwed his wife.
The porno doc!
The professor and Sgt Greer,
Here on an alien's ship.
So this is the tale of the castaways,
They're here for a long, long time,
They'll have to make the best of things,
It's an uphill climb.
The college kid and the Colonel too,
Will do their very best,
To make the others comfortable,
In the busted ship.
No phone, no lights, no shuttle craft,
Just a thousand Dell PCs,
Like ST:TNG,
As primitive as can be.
So join us here each week my friends,
You're sure to watch them slip,
From all the stranded castaways,
Here on "Alien's Ship."
John
Anonymous originated at 4chan, right? So is this 4channers ridiculing other 4channers? Themselves? Or is it just for the lulz, just like everything they do?
(Anonymous Coward because I've forgotten my password and I CBA to try to recover it) Not very 1337 are we?
To have a right to do a thing is not at all the same as to be right in doing it
with snowshovel and loosing for a week now. I could use some backup...
Just FYI this story is actually a total lie. I would tag it as 'lies' if I could figure out how.
You look beautiful! Incidentally, my favourite artist is Picasso.
Because it's a completely autonomous collection of individuals, anyone can CLAIM the group says, or will do, something. Until you see something actually happen, don't assume it's anything more than trolling. Operation Payback is an example of how the group will sometimes come together to focus on a goal, but other than that, it's like a fancy party where everyone wears the same costume and mask, and everyone is really, really drunk.
There is no -1 Disagree.
That's fair. I'm not saying you have to watch it in order to say you don't like it. For example, Jersey Shore really doesn't interest me at all.
But I'm also not going to come out and say "Every Jersey Shore episode is just strippers in catfights and spiky-haired guys getting thrown out of bars."
While Stargate is somewhat repetitive, there are plenty of episodes (including some of the best) which don't follow the pattern CookieForYou identified at all. It would be like dismissing Star Trek because of the particle of the week -- sure, technobabble is a weak point, but the show is still worth watching.
Don't thank God, thank a doctor!
