FBI Releases Boston Bombing Suspect Images/Videos
An anonymous reader writes "The FBI has released images of what they say are two suspects with backpacks and ball caps. 'Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers or family members of the suspects,' Special Agent Rick DesLauriers, the head of the FBI's Boston office said. 'And though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us.'"

There are cheap cameras today that do full HD, low artifacts, and run 30 frames a second. These images were from old equipment and software. The smudged faces is that. They should be replaced. All replaced. The city I live has less than one FPS on its non-traffic cameras. It's pathetic what salesman push on the HLS-cash-infused cities when cheaper, and much better, hardware and software is available right now. You get what you pay for, and sometimes, not even that.
All the money in "defense spending" both internal and international and we're crowdsourcing their jobs?
Allright, let the FBI go on looking without any help from the general public, some of whom will know these two. That should give these two time to perform an attack on the people you know and love. Sheesh.
No, idiot, they're asking people who were in Boston on Monday taking pictures with their smartphones to look through their photos again. Chances are lots of people inadvertently got photos of the guys, and some of those might be clear enough for identification (as opposed to the crummy security cam footage).

Do you even lift?
These aren't the 'roids you're looking for.
I'm surprised they couldn't clean up the images more. Clearly you can't do much with a single image since there's only so much information, but with a video you're getting a slightly different set of information with each frame, I always figured you could do a mapping/averaging of all the different shots and extract something a little cleaner. Unfortunately it looks like that's not the case (or at least it doesn't work well here).
I stole this Sig
I hope they're the ones that did it, because whether they are or not, in the eyes of a public starving for villains to blame they're now as good as guilty.
The government posts "most wanted" pictures for heinous crimes quite often, usually without dire consequences for either the perpetrator, or idiot members of the public getting themselves killed trying to nab violent psychopaths. I suspect these two have already gone into hiding --- they won't be obvious to the general public. But who they were and where they lived before the crime will be discovered really fast. However, I can see this type of situation getting messier in the future --- suppose the "unofficial crowd sourced intelligence gathering" had identified "suspects" on public message boards within 30 minutes of the incident (which I don't see as out-of-the-question for future incidents); then things could get awfully rough for any vague look-alikes in the area.
There's a fine line between soliciting public support and encouraging vigilante justice.
Well... the article does seem to make it pretty clear which side of the line they are on...
We considered them to be armed and extremely dangerous. No one should approach them. No one should attempt to apprehend them except law enforcement. Let me reiterate that caution. Do not take any action on your own. If you see these men, contact law enforcement.
They just aren't yelling "ENHANCE" loud enough yet. Give it time...
They know the resolution stinks. What they are hoping for is that people will go through their personal photos that they took which are much better resolution and notice that one of them may be in the background.
Be civil.
a) Facebook photo's are (or should be) private especially to the government
b) Even if it's 99.9% accurate, that still yields a lot of false positives. And having worked with that stuff, you would be glad to have 90% recognition.

And this is why people are scared of Google Glass--it'll make an already existing problem worse; that is, the government will outsource its spying to the people.
While in general I agree with your post, one thing is terribly wrong.
I suspect these two have already gone into hiding
This assumes that the men in the photos are guilty, please don't be another member of our society who convicts people in the court of public opinion, there's far too many Nancy Grace viewers already. How about "I suspect the people who carried out this crime have already gone into hiding" or something along those lines. Sorry if this comes off as pedantic.
Occupy Wall Street showed that when the US Gov't wants a protest movement to go away, it does. So who really cares if we're being watched? What difference does it make from a practical standpoint. Plus, if we can catch these sort of things it's one less excuse for pointless wars against anybody with a turban and brown skin, and one less excuse for Patriot Acts.
All you're really giving up anyway is the illusion of freedom you don't have. Real freedom is economic freedom, and OWS showed us who's really in control.

Not overly pedantic; point well taken. Consider my post above thus edited so far as Slashdot allows.

Since you had the courage to post with your account, I decided not to down-mod you, but ask you a counter-question: How?
Many countries have problems with selective interpretations of religion (including Christianity - abortion clinics, for example). How would you prevent such behavior? By outlawing a religion (Won't help - you don't declare your religion upon entry into the US)? How about ethnic cleansing (huge collateral damage)?
And if you resort to such techniques, what does it say about the robustness of your country's ideals? If you drop them at the first sign of trouble, are they really worth preserving? India (the world's largest democracy) has had attacks for decades (citation). And they haven't spent years interfering in the Middle East. So if you have a workable solution, I'd love to hear it.
"existing problem"? What problem? FBI asking Americans to look at their photos in order to help identify and question suspects who *bombed* innocent civilians at a freaking marathon? What is so terrible about that? You freaking nuts are sick.
FYI, when someone asks for a citation, linking them to InfoWars.com is about as good as handing them a bologna sandwich. Alex Jones is a flipping nutcase.
Where are the pictures of them dropping and leaving the backpacks in the exact spots the explosions took place?
They mentioned that on one newscast. They suggested that the FBI didn't want potental witnesses to get confused by what they saw personally and what they saw on TV.
Imagine at trial months from now, the defense attorney cross examining a witness, "Now Mr/Ms So-and-so, are you certain you personally saw my client place his backpack at the scene of the explosion or are you just remembering the video the FBI distributed after the incident?"
Well, it's counter to American culture, and it will take a couple of generations, but the 'how' is through education. Fund schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan and Yemen and Sudan. Support local politicians, through dollars, who endorse education of their people, particularly girls. More than anything else, the Mullahs fear an educated populace. Educate them out of ignorance and terror.
I'm surprised that the doubting Thomases are getting so many mod points around here today. There is no better facial recognition system in the world than the human brain. The pictures are worthlessly low-res and indiscriminate? Someone who knows these individuals will correlate the physical details of the face, the expression, the height, haircut, posture, and clothing instantly and unconsciously. They will be recognized. Those acquaintances can see the forest. All we are getting is trees.
And to cover the other criticism of why these two were chosen... Both were seen walking together with black backpacks. Then each one was seen individually right at one of the two bomb sites. In the case of suspect #2, there is video of him putting his backpack down and then walking away from it. Personally I agree that this is sufficient to refer to both individuals as "suspects."
Since you had the courage to post with your account, I decided not to down-mod you, but ask you a counter-question: How?
Under which guideline would you have down-modded his post? I don't have points myself right now, but I don't remember there being an option in the dropdown for "Unlikeable."
About 70% of bombings conducted in the US since 9/11 have been conducted by neo-nazis and similar radical groups.

Maybe he was lazy and overstayed his student visa instead of renewing it, and thus deserves to be deported. And maybe he's the brat of some rich saudi connected to the government, and they don't want a big scene.
Seven puppies were harmed during the making of this post.
One of the suspects was wearing his hat backwards in the video. Now really if you are wearing a hat to hide your face from security cams that is about as dumb a thing as you can do.
The thing is that they may be able to hide and lie low etc. But the FBI doesn't forget.
Not that I'm condoning any violence but when a bunch of Saudis brought down your towers you did use it to justify killing a lot more than 3000 innocent Muslims... Look at it from another perspective. You're a huge and powerful country that thought you were completely justified to kill a bunch of innocents. Why would a hurting and disillusioned Muslim feel bad about taking the hurt to you? From my perspective you both have pretty similar attitudes. If you want to claim the moral high ground you have to earn it.
Additionally, as the other poster said there is currently no link between this bombing and Islam. So you're either a troll or a racist, probably both.
I don't think the AC is saying it is justified so much as he is suggesting that you look at why these things might be happening. Besides, aren't you the one trying to say that this bombing justifies "doing something" about Muslims?
Quod erat demonstrandum

a Slashdotter claiming a female bed partner? Now we know you're hiding something behind those lies.
I agree. We should catch them, try them and if guilty fry them. No reason not to be civil.
Er, how do you know they are muslim? That bit hasn't been found out yet. And if they were, to be fair, you have been bombing quite a few of their countries for quite a few years now. You expect zero backlash?

Mind you the average person in the US isn't terribly bright.
The US governance also fears an educated population. Educate them out of ignorance and wars on terror.
What about Timothy McVeigh? Are you saying it's ok for US military veterans to kill kids at a day care center? Are you saying it's justified for NRA members to blow up buildings? Should we look the other way when American raised as Catholics commit mass murder?
No, I think you would disagree. Because in those instances we're tying one nutjob murderer to larger groups that he is not a representative member of. So why do you make that same mistake with muslims, assuming they're all evil or that there's a vast muslim movement to destroy the US? Are you listening to too much of the far right wing media that keeps insisting that muslims are the enemy, spending too much time reading WorldNet Daily, going to one of those churches who falsely teach that islam is a religion of violence while overlooking all the violence that Christians have committed?
And why do you think this bombing was the result of muslims in the first place?
Just in case you don't know it yet ...
The terrorists who hijacked the planes and then slammed them into the World Trade Center (and the Pentagon and the one which crashed in Pennsylvania) were ALL college educated

if spree killers usually use guns, then we must do something about all gun owners, right?

You completely ignored the GP's message to spout off your hostile and prejudiced tirade. The question was why do you expect them to give a crap about how innocents in America feel if America doesn't give a crap about their innocents?
That fellow (Jeff Bauman) who lost both legs below the knee, the one whose femoral artery is being pinched shut by Carlos Arredondo as he's being wheeled away from the incident, identified his attacker. From Bloomberg:
"Minutes before the bombs blew up in Boston, Jeff Bauman looked into the eyes of the man who tried to kill him.
Just before 3 p.m. on April 15, Bauman was waiting among the crowd for his girlfriend to cross the finish line at the Boston Marathon. A man wearing a cap, sunglasses and a black jacket over a hooded sweatshirt looked at Jeff, 27, and dropped a bag at his feet, his brother, Chris Bauman, said in an interview.
Two and a half minutes later, the bag exploded, tearing Jeff’s legs apart. A picture of him in a wheelchair, bloodied and ashen, was broadcast around the world as he was rushed to Boston Medical Center. He lost both legs below the knee."

Under which guideline would you have down-modded his post? I don't have points myself right now, but I don't remember there being an option in the dropdown for "Unlikeable."
Flame-bait: There is no evidence at this time to back up his hypothesis that it was Islamic fundamentalists. Also, he used a phrase "If the world can't keep Islam and all the Islamic violence out, at least USA can try" - which would seem to imply that he has a problem with the religion and the violence, without differentiating the two (and which planet would he have them relocate to?).
It's nice you found links that aren't directly from Glenn Beck but the story line you are propagating is directly from Mr. Conspiracy himself. He's tried to turn every single rumor about this into an attack on Obama, in this case being that the kid is actually involved but connected and so Obama is trying to sneak him out of the country. He doesn't need facts on his side, he relies on innuendo and people like you to propagate the falsehoods. Did you realize you just became a willing participant in a propaganda campaign by a crazy Mormon?
As the other poster said there could be a million reasons to deport him, including that when they searched his apartment they found cannabis or even that his parents asked him to come home so he doesn't get hurt by vigilantes. If I was him I'd think about leaving too, you never know when someone like Glenn Beck is going to point the mob in your direction and laugh all the way to bank when his vigilante mob murders the wrong person.
"It's just that I can't stand it no more"
Yea, I felt that way too when the IRA were bombing mainland UK whilst being
bankrolled by Americans. (NORAID)
Look no further than the KKK to see an extensive history of violence in the USA coming from proud Christians. Thousands of people dead because of a different flavor of intolerance, in a different era. This too shall pass.
I've seen faces like that in New York, Detroit, Chicago, Seattle, Quito, Lima, Moscow, Rome, Venice, Madrid, and La Paz. For that matter he looks a whole lot like a guy I went to high school with in Michigan in the '70s. To my knowledge none of them were muslim, and the guy in Michigan was a Baptist.
Just because someone has darker skin and a bigger nose than you doesn't actually mean that he's a bad guy, no matter how much of a racist prick you may be.
"Think about how stupid the average person is. Now, realise that half of them are dumber than that." - George Carlin
So neo-nazis are less likely to be stopped, you mean?
xkcd is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
I like the 'if guilty' part. I am sure the prisoners in Guantanamo Bay also like that and would welcome it.
I know off topic, but not completely.
Don't fight for your country, if your country does not fight for you.
I'm not saying that every Muslim is bad, but the fact is, most of those bombings are connected with Islam ...
And most of the drone strikes on muslims are connected with us.
It shouldn't take a rocket science to see that the "war on terror" is going to generate a backlash. Doesn't matter at all "who started it" or "who is in the right". All that matters at this point is that as long as one side pokes the other side with a stick the other side will poke back.
A war on terror can't be won, it will only generate a perpetual backlash. The only winning move is not to play.
Both suspects wear baseball caps. They are baseball fans. Suspect and round up all the baseball players and fans you know. Clearly it is a conspiracy by baseball fans against the rest of us!
I've seen reeking, racking & wrecking but that's a new one on me.
What was it Einstein said about the universe being infinite?
Confucius say, "Find worm in apple - bad. Find half a worm - worse."
I would like to make a partial counter.
When christianity was around 1500 years old you had the spainish inquisition, Slavery was considered good, Witch trials that killed by with toture and the christians brought a whole continent into slavery (South America).
Guess How old Islam is right now?
It is only two data points, but religions that demand you must believe and all others are to be killed is the problem. All three religions based on the teachings of Moses have this problem.
i thought once I was found, but it was only a dream.
They didn't use crock pots but pressure cookers to build their bombs, but given the stupidity of our government they would probably ban crock pots as well.
Time to offend someone
My point is that in the big scheme of things we have not injured the Muslim world at all, without us (the West) they would be far poorer, far more backwards and pretty much worse off in every single way.
Except for those that we killed. And except for those have been killed by the dictators we are financing. And except for those we kidnap and torture.
The main mistake you are making however is where you draw the line: it's not the "Muslims" on the one side and the "West" on the other side. Both groups contain a large group of psychopaths who really like to kill "other" people and do it on a regular basis. You should draw the line between the psychopaths and their victims. But instead you side with one group of psychopaths and rationalize that by claiming that "our" psychopaths are not as bad as "their" psychopaths. The relevant question here is: Who killed more people, Osama or Obama? Probably Obama. Bush or Hussein? Probably Hussein. And even if Obama were only 1 milliHitler and Osama were 2 milliHitler you still are morally bankrupt for siding with the "lesser evil" of both.
It was the people who practice Christianity who bombed a government building in Oslo (killing 8) and then went on a killing spree on a youth camp (killing 69).
See... I can do it too.
I see why you do it. It is fun to let the actions of a few wackos condemn a whole religion.
Also, if you hate freedom of religion so much, why don't you move to Saudi Arabia, Iran, or Egypt (or China)?
