As far as ISIS is concerned, I seriously doubt Iraq has any interest in protecting those asshats. If Iraq had a functioning government, that govt would probably ask for the U.S. to send a clean-up crew. It sure enough is needed in the case of ISIS. If there is an Allah, I hope that s/he shows them the same justice that they think they are dishing out.

First off, this is in a part of Iraq that the Iraqi gov does NOT control. They probably would have little issues with us taking it out.
Secondly, W has already shown that CONgress can be conned into anything.
Third, while I am in favor of blowing this to bits (along with the recruits), it does ZERO good, unless the iraqi gov and army is ready to defend itself AND if the gov. is ready to change. The iraqi regime that is in control is Shias and they have not been willing to work with the Sunnis. In fact, they did to Sunnis, what SUnnies did to them for many decades. What is needed now, is for their military to take back that region (with the west's help), and then grow up and act like a nation and not a religion.

You need to start paying attention. The ISIS threat has already lead to a change in the Iraqi government. They have replaced their military commanders who failed to put up a fight when ISIS first started their attacks in Iraq and reformed their military units. The ISIS threat also caused the Iraqi government to directly ask the US for help. That is a major political hurdle to cross for any Arab leader these days. US supporters in the ME are not very popular to put it mildly. The Arab leaders may ask for US help behind closed doors but to do it in the open is a very clear sign that they are worried about the ISIS threat. This ISIS threat has resulted in the Iraqi's, Kurds, and Sunni and Shia tribal leaders working together towards a common goal instead of fighting and under mining each other as they have been doing for years. They are finally taking advantage of the capabilities the US is providing. This includes air support, military advisers, and a fair number of spec ops troops to support the reformed Iraqi armed forces and Kurdish forces. These US actions so far do not require any "conning" of congress and falls under the presidential authority. How can people witness the barbarity and carnage ISIS is delivering across the region and not want to put aside all the other petty political bullshit that is so popular these days and support any and all efforts to destroy the ISIS threat? They can always go back to fighting each other after the ISIS threat is removed.

I'm sorry but where have you been these last few months?
Iraq has been asking the US to send in the troops for a while now. We have been ignoring them and playing games claiming that the Maliki government caused ISIS to happen and more or less forced him out of office before we would help. Now we are doing limited bombings and offering strategy meetings with about 1000 troops in the area supposedly to protect US personnel. We were going to go in and rescue some people on a mountain but I guess they were either killed or escaped by other means. We did drop food and water I think.

The Kurds helped those people on the mountain escape to Turkey (likely with clandestine US involvement as well). ISIS was actually using Turkey's old embassy in Mosul to hold some Turks hostage for awhile, so it's no surprise that this training camp turned up in Mosul. Neat detective work tracking it down, though.

This is really a non-issue. You really don't understand modern warfare if you actually believe that.

What lead to a change in the Iraqi government was that Maliki refused to allow US troops to stay permanently. Word is the successor comes pre-agreed on that issue.
Meanwhile IS is the enemy in Iraq but somehow we're not supposed to notice that they are our allies in Syria. Who would have thought that they might use the same weapons we gave them in A suddenly in B?
And since they are additionally quite heavily funded mostly from Saudi Arabia, which is basically the most brutal theocratic dictatorship on the planet, not to mention our favorite client state in the region, killing IS supply lines really should just be a matter of saying the word.

This whole thing could've been avoided, had G.W.Bush done the economically feasible thing and fixed many problems at once.
1. Ignore the blunderbutts @ the U.N. , while preparing their eviction notice in favor of housing the homeless in that overlarge building.
2. Conquer the Mid-East in one fell swoop of bombing and attacks until they wave the white flag or grow extinct.
3. Trade conquests to China in lieu of payment for debts.
4. Purchase our oil from our new besties the Chinese and let them control the problematic zealots for a change, their way.
5. Watch the U.N. wiggle, whine and dissolve when they realize, the world knows what a sham they were.
No extremists, no hostages, no threats, just some nice Islamic people learning to speak the language of their new overlords while the world gets some peace.
China should be able to handle the rest of the Islamic world making puny threats to them, but, eventually the entertainment will stop as they get used to the new reality and notice Allah is being phased out like the Buddha. ( unfortunately there are no statues of Mohammed for the Chinese Air Force to bomb to dust.)

As long as we are pretending fan fiction is close to workable reality, we might as well also inject the claim that it could have been avoided long before G.W. Bush was president if President Clinton would have supported the Kurds when they attempted to overthrow Saddam back in the mid 90's.
Of course a lot can be said about other actions if they had been taken. For instance, President Clinton also had the opportunity to take out Bin Laden before 9/11 but chose not to for probably good reasons (too many civilian casualties would have incurred)
Hind sight is always better then the fog of reality in real time I guess. It's fun to look back and think what if something was done differently but if seems to be a mighty powerful word. If the dog didn't stop to shit, he would have caught the rabbit. If the rabbit didn't stop to shit, the dog would have never caught him. How true either of those statements could be is just a guess, but if we knew, it still wouldn't be as real as what really happened.

To Israel an ISIS state would be a real blessing (note how the IS has not yet uttered a single word against Zionism, Jews or Isreal... except here in Europe, but not on Iraq).
There are a lot of reasons why Israel would love an ISIS state in Iraq: It will take them a lot of time to become a real threat to Israel, and this could only happen if they had an air force: From the north of Iraq their ability to hit Israeli targets are minimal and they would be exposed to a counterstrike.
They are not popular among Hezbollah being these Shiites. They form a buffer to the influence of Iran and the import of Iranian weapons to the Gaza stripe/

I have been paying attention. There are many that call for America (and the west) to go back into Iraq with troops. WORST IDEA GOING. This needs to be done by their own troops. However, just because they changed generals and leaders does NOT solve the issues. In particular, Iraqis' need to set their religion and focus on being a nation. That is, that they pull together AS A NATION, and not as tribal warlords, which is exactly where they are at today.

In addition, for O to go back into Iraq, we actually DO need CONgress permission. Why? Because this will be a THIRD war (2 bushes and now O). In fact, we will have no choice but to bomb major parts of Syria, which by definition will require CONgress. And we have already seen that CONgress blocked O from going to Syria in the first place and stopping Assad and ISIS. IMHO, it was the house GOP that created this vacuum that allowed ISIS to expand.

I'm not sure Obama can politically afford to get too carried away with bombing ISIS. Whether it is true or not, there is plenty of talk that Obama allowed this to happen by not keeping troops in Iraq longer. He blames the Iraqi government for not updating the SOFA agreements but people have been claiming that Hillary (presumable under Obama's orders) kept increasing demands that couldn't be met by the Iraqi government. He then declared his campaign promise has been realized and ended the war on terror to boot.
So how does he go back and say the war on terror is not over, how does he come back and say we need to go back into Iraq after claiming the people foreseeing this were nutters, how does he do this without giving credibility to all those decrying our exist from the world or who said if we did not lead in Syria, something evil would fill the void. The problem is, he seems to believe that if we mind our own business, the world will not hate us, will not want to kill us, and situations like this will not exist.
Now I will admit that all that may not be 100% true, but it is the perception people are getting and it is the perception he seems to be afraid of when he has to acknowledge his foreign policy was a failure, that his plans for peace didn't work. This is what he is up with, he is either claimed to be wrong on everything and allow it to happen, or he has to admit he was wrong and do something about it that goes against what he seems to believe.
I dropped that comic because it does appear that he is more occupied playing golf than the problems in the world. But to be fair, if you can golf somewhat well, it is a relaxing and peaceful time in which you can actually think things through. This is probably why so much business gets done on the gold course.

Well he can't run for re-election and that tends to let second term Presidents do things they normally wouldn't do for fear of negatively impacting the next election. The world cannot continue using the earlier Iraqi and Afghanistan wars as an excuse to completely oppose all potential military involvement in any future situation. When making the decision on whether to commit military forces each situation needs to be evaluated separately and on it's own merits. The ISIS threat needs to be destroyed using any means possible. US air support, spec ops teams, and military advisers are working with both the Iraqi and Kurdish ground forces. It's a low risk strategy for the US military and the Iraqi and Kurd ground forces are doing the lions share of the fighting and dying. After all it's their country and their people. In the past the US provided a no-fly zone to protect the Kurds from retaliation by Saddam Hussein after the 1991 Iraqi War. The people in that region are probably the only ones in the world who actually has a favorable opinion on the US. That fact alone is reason enough to try and help them now. Normally I don't think the US should get involved in any military conflicts unless US interests are realistically and directly threatened. There is currently no country in the world worth the loss of even one US soldier. However, in this particular case I am willing to set that requirement aside and support the destruction of a truly despicable group of serial killers.

I do not disagree with your sentiment, I just perceive Obama's dilemma as being such that he will loose face whichever way he goes so I think he is going to pick whatever is most favorable to him according to the people he cares to impress.
Otherwise, who is going to pay him $2mil a speech or give his daughters a cushy job so his future is secure......It's like drawing a line in the sand and having Russia bail them out when it appears that not only was it crossed, but they were pissing all over your sand castle while doing it.
I'm reminded of an old asterix and obelix cartoon where in one of the scenes, asterix is in a roman tower and obelix outside and they try to go to each other pummeling the Romans along the way just to realize they switched places and have to do it again. Seem the area has many groups - some friendly to one agenda, others friendly to other agendas. It doesn't seem hard to use areal photos to find *a* camp. But how might they know it's an ISIS camp? (especially considering that a facility may be Local Police one day, and ISIS the next.

1.) Photographs are images frozen in time. A little bit later, things change. Try it. Go outside with your phone and take a picture. Wait until after Family Feud. Go outside and look at the same scene and the picture on the phone. Notice the the cat is gone now.

The way to deal with these people is to ignore whether they have the second hostage (assume he's already dead, even if that's technically premature) and to bomb the area, preferably with something like white phosphorous incendiaries. It also needs to be done soon, because people regard such actions less favourably when it is longer from the event which the punishment is being meted out for. Make it very clear that once someone starts killing hostages, reprisals will come. If you don't, the next damn terrorist group will think they can get away with this sort of thing too; you're not protecting those already captured, you're protecting everyone else.
It's a shame, but being this nasty is the only way of hammering home to idiots that fucking with is a seriously bad idea (unless you can act with more precision and kill just the terrorists). And it does work: it's been proved to work over and over throughout history. It probably needs to be accompanied with a full apology to any innocents caught up in the crossfire to mitigate incidental downstream trouble.

If a video of a man's head being sawed off makes you frightened and impairs your judgement, then you are just playing into their hand. It's a shame the word 'terrorism' has shifted away from its original meaning of "The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims", because it's such a great word, and it applies amazingly well here. An act of terror doesn't have to be crashing a plane into a building. Sawing off a man's head then posting the video on the internet is, in fact, an act of terror. It is designed to inspire fear. They've figured out what the Mafia, the Viet Cong, the Mongols, and countless other groups throughout history have found out: Making yourself look like an inhuman monster is actually a good survival strategy when your enemies are stronger and more numerous. I agree with your points about genocide, I never said anything contrary. Nevertheless, sawing off a man's head and posting the video online is an act of terror. To drive the point home, it seems that the knife used during the video was a prop knife (or just a very dull one) and the actual beheading happened off-screen, maybe even after he was killed by other means.
The same goes for the video of heads on spikes.
The Yezidi people, on the other hand, were given a more 'martial'-style firing squad execution. These things should give you hints about what their motives, tactics, and strategies are.
I never suggested anything about capitulation. The strategy that I'd like to personally see is a targeted effort to take out key facilities and leaders, perhaps with the cooperation of neighboring states like Iran. But indiscriminate bombing (what other people seem to be suggesting in this thread) is emotionally motivated and will not solve anything, in fact it will make things (much) worse.
If you're NOT frightened/angry and are capable of still thinking about the situation rationally, then my comment doesn't apply to you.

When the instigation there failed to elicit support for an invasion, (again, that Assad, a seemingly quite rational person if you've ever read his speeches, had suddenly authorize acts 'of terror' that would ONLY serve to invite outside forces to intervene (when he was close to crushing the insurgency anyway) - suddenly ISIS shows up.

So now, the border between iraq and syria has become blurred due to 'ISIS' (which are the 'moderate' rebels americans told were being funded), and yet again, the west has an excuse to go knocking on Assad's door.

Yes, it is far better to be like Europe where they simply pay the terrorists a ransom, ignoring the fact that it continues to rise and fund the terrorism.

Willfully obtuse much? If the U.S. gets to bomb a few thousand people because one guy got his head cut off, what are the Muslims over there entitled to do to you in return for Predator Drones, Signature Strikes, and bombing weddings and funerals?
