Does Elon Musk's Hyperloop Make More Sense On Mars?

An anonymous reader writes: Elon Musk's Hyperloop project has its challenges in places that have air. But in places with little air and no fossil fuels, where you can't fly and there's little drag, it makes a lot more sense. Post-doc researcher Leon Vanstone thinks the Hyperloop may have more of a future on Mars than here on Earth. He says, "Conservative cost estimates for building a single Hyperloop track from Los Angeles to San Francisco come in at US$6 billion. Taking the technology nationwide would cost hundreds of billions of dollars more. When you consider that normal, boring airplanes already travel at about 500-600 mph – about two-thirds as fast as the Hyperloop’s predicted speed – you might begin to wonder if an extra 200 mph is enough of a payoff for those hundreds of billions of dollars. ... Well, Elon Musk is no idiot, and he certainly has the money to hire some of the best and the brightest. ... A high-speed, safe, self-powered transportation system will be vital to connect Martian settlements – likely to be few in number and separated by large distances."

      One must note: The question of "does it make more sense" is mildly hilarious when one is discussing mass transportation on a lifeless world.

      It makes about as much sense as a petting zoo.

      Well, something that makes zero sense can still make more sense than something that makes negative sense.

      Consider the MAD argument for nuclear weapons. The argument itself requires that someone who masses up nuclear weapons are sane and sensible and never gets the notion that he could get away with striking first.
      It is pretty naive to think that would be the case, that is why it is called Mutually Assured Destruction, not Mutually Assured Stalemate or something.
      After a few close calls people began to realize that the idea was like playing with fire, the cold war was just an accident waiting to happen.

      So it is not unheard of for ideas to make negative sense.

      I dunno - if you could get a government grant and tax breaks, turn the debts into complex derivatives and sell them on, do an IPO then dump your stock at the peak of the market it could be profitable. Plus, unlike transport systems on earth, you wouldn't have those pesky paying customers turning up and forcing you to incur all sorts of ongoing fuel and maintenance costs.

      Securing right-of-way will probably be a few zillion cheaper on an uninhabited and fairly lethal rock. Hopefully your robots are up to it though, as labor costs will really bleed you dry out there.

      Either on Earth or Mars you need an evacuated tunnel for the train. That's because the plan on Earth is to remove 99.9% of atmospheric pressure, while in mars the pressure is only 99.4% less than that of Earth. So you still need to remove some of Mars' natural air pressure to let the hyperloop run as fast as they want it to run on Earth. Meanwhile there is a problem that might have a solution, in either case. That is the pressure build-up in front of the hyperloop vehicle. It defines a maximum speed --but note that because it is a pressure build-up, it should be possible for the vehicle to partly evacuate that pressure, and store it on-board ---and then dump it to the exterior of the tunnel when the vehicle docks at the passenger boarding/disembarking station. After enough vehicles in the tunnel have done that simple thing, pressure should no longer be a barrier to speed in the tunnel, either on Earth or Mars.

      A train in a vacuum is called a 'train', not a hyperloop. Nobody outside of journalism students thinks Musk was the first to have the idea, but perhaps he has the methodology to get it built.

      There's also no passengers either.

      So, in the same way a roller coaster at the bottom of the Marianas Trench would be novel and have no competition ... debating how effective the hyper loop would be on Mars is kind of pointless.

      We've never put a human on Mars. Let's not start planning the transportation grid.

      Sorry, this is someone doing their post-doc work on science fiction, so I'm afraid I fail to see the point.

      Is the wind resistance from an atmosphere 0.6% as dense as Earth's a major problem? It seems to me that you wouldn't need the tunnel at all, saving considerably on building costs. Or if you need the tunnel it is only to keep the dust from piling up on the tracks and doesn't have to be depressurized.

      I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps there is some scarce resource that could be easily depleted by having too many people concentrated in one place? I don't know what that could be - there's no water, for example. Or perhaps there's some activity (e.g., mining) which would best be separated from the main settlements for safety reasons.

      For some of the same reasons that settlements on Earth are far apart. Settlements will probably be based on natural resources, and it's doubtful you'll find them all close together. On Mars, it will probably be based on different mineral and ore mines, and they'll have to be mined where they can be found.

    Its easy to throw around big numbers to scare away people, US$6 Billion is the average price of an airport.
    You have to put things in perspective.
    Furthermore, how long is that of Iraq war? A few days? Hours? What's more important, to invest in our infrastructure or to wage illegal wars halfway across the globe?

      That is a pretty reasonable cost for high speed rail transit between two cities. The French LGV Est line cost about â4 billion ($4.41 billion), which is a similar price for a similar distance. I could have picked UK's HS2, which is several times the price.

      If it came in under 60 Billion (inc rolling stock, airlock, vacuum pumps and all the other paraphernalia) then everyone would be stunned....

      Really simple, It isn't going to happen on Earth let alone Mars....

      Heavens - even something as simple as a high speed train between SF and LA is unlikely.

      Also, a single Boeing 777 is $320 million (source: google it. It's in huge numbers at the top, with a link to this USA today article: http://www.usatoday.com/story/... ).

      In short, AC is right. We've spent hundreds of billions on airline travel, why would its replacement be significantly cheaper? Why are we more worried about the approximately equivalent financial cost, and less worried about the significant positive impact on the environment that this would have?

      For SFO to LAX we'd probably fly in a 737 not a 777 because it's more optimized for short haul. Published fuel economy for a 737 is 2.31 liters/100 km/passenger or about 102 mpg.

      We'll ignore the fact that airplanes are not always 100% full. We'll ignore the fact that an LAX to SFO trip won't realize that fuel economy--need a longer haul flight for that. We'll ignore all the other inefficiencies, like taxiing, routing, traffic, missed approaches, etc. We will also round up the distance from LAX to SFO from 543 km to 550.

      At 2.31 l/100 km x 180 pax x 550 km we get a minimum fuel burn of 990 liters for one flight or 267 gallons. While this is certainly better than us all driving there in our SUVs, it's already half the efficiency of us all getting in Prius's and making the trip (fully loaded Prius at 50 MPG/vehicle = 200 mpg with 4 pax).

      Hyperloop would almost certainly exceed the efficiency of our fully laden Prius. So if the infrastructure cost is the same, why wouldn't we want to build the more efficient choice? Hyperloop will have the advantage of dispatching in much smaller batches, so the occupancy factor should be higher than air travel. The convenience factor should be higher too. It's easy to imagine hyperloop sending a 'train' every 5 minutes. And since we don't need a massive airport with 2 mile long runways, hyperloop stations could be built in or near downtowns and main streets. Bury the last few miles of each line and you get the convenience of a subway, but it takes you directly to the downtown of another city. It's like European train travel, but better.

      I'm not optimistic about it getting built; but aside from environmental considerations; a hyperloop system could be of considerable interest for freight that is currently too expensive for air travel; but would be willing to pay a premium over conventional rail or truck for greater speed.

      If the tube were big enough to allow intermodal containers, the customers would swarm you, demanding that you take their money. Aircraft style ULDs would probably be the more realistic option, and better suited to the tube shape; but a suitable robotic autoloader could probably spit those things into suitably designed freight chassis cars at a good clip. Couldn't beat trains on price; but markedly faster, probably cheaper per unit mass than air freight.

      Looking at the concept art I'd say the basic idea behind the hyperloop is to use almost the same tech that is used in gas pipelines.
      Pressure in interstate gas pipelines is actually a lot higher than what would be required. See http://naturalgas.org/naturalgas/transport/
      Thus low cost.

      AC could have forewent with the "illegal wars" part, but he does have a point. These aren't very large number in terms relative to other infrastructure projects and certainly not relative to military actions. Given that much of the history of war has a foundation built upon the disenfranchised seeking a correction their usage of "war" as a comparison has merit. Feeding the world's hungry can be solved for $30B/year according to UN estimates. The Iraq war is estimated to cost $1.7T with a projected cost (that includes veterans benefits to $6T within the next four decades.

      Exactly and when they say Hyperloop will cost billions it is just to implement. The savings from gas, time and other stuff is a big plus too. Also the development incentives and new jobs for this failed economic system. It is a short - med - long term project.

    The main difference between a ground based and a flying vehicle is the transport cost. A flying vehicle has to invest energy in lift, a ground vehicle does not. So in the end, the higher energy cost for flying from San Francisco to L.A. might offset the lower initial cost of "boring airplanes".

    (This might beneath lots of other reasons also be one of the main causes why we don't have flying cars yet in every garage.)

      The drag benefits of not being in contact with ground are better than you might think. Consider the AC72s in the last America's Cup. The difference in efficiency when foiling was extreme.

      Air travel does not require connecting infrastructure. If you want to take a train an extra 200 miles, you need to lay track AND fuel it. With the plane you only need the fuel..

      Water has a 14 times higher Reynolds number than air, so it's better to have most of the ship not having to move through water. But that's a completely separate issue. We don't want the train to bore its own tunnel each time it goes from San Francisco to L.A.. We build the tunnel just once and then keep it. Thus what we have is the friction between the wheel and the rail, if we use a rail based system. Or we use a maglev system, which indeed needs to be powered and thus creates additional energy cost compared to a wheel-rail-system. It's then a question of speed if the cost for the friction or the cost for the maglev is higher. We could get the cost for the maglev to be close to zero if we manage to use superconductivity, but that would add to the installation cost.

      All of these things are well understood, heck I bet a fancy business man like Elon probably has some acronym for these types of calculations, maybe something like ROI.

      Costs more to build, but costs less to run, seems like a great place to determine the number of years to get a payback on the capital investment....

      Also on the total cost, the US highway system cost hundreds of billions, we've probably spent closer to a trillion on airports over the years... hyperloop doesn't sound that much more expensive for capital investment, if it can be run and maintained cheaply, and deliver superior performance to the airlines seems like a no brainer, of course that is a big if.

      In a tunnel, air friction becomes really important. Trains (or hyperloops) fit close in the tunnel, and there's a lot of air has to move from in front of the train to behind the train, squeezing through that narrow space. Evacuating the tunnel (ie, hyperloop) is a huge benefit. So is running your train on Mars, where the atmosphere is already a -14.6 psi/ -0.994 bar vacuum.

      Last I heard the price per foot of track is $125 so it's going to be around $132m lay the track. Grading, earthwork, tunneling, and anything else that needs to be done to prepare for laying the track would cost extra.

      That makes me wonder. We are paying bucket loads of money for very fancy terminals, but the actual cost of a runway and a few fuel trucks and even air traffic control tower are relatively low. How much could you reduce the cost of air travel if you not only eliminated the frills in the air (ie Spirit Airlines and other no frills low cost carriers), but simply eliminated most of the costs of terminal on the ground and went back to the old school stairs (or elevator) that you roll up to the airplane. Of course most of the airports that are nearby big cities where there is higher demand have fancy indoor mall style terminals, but perhaps outlying air strips could attempt the no frills model.

      Non-foiling boats are ploughing through the water. They get a huge benefit by leaving as little of themselves as possible to do that, and fly the rest through the air. A train riding on rails is much more efficient. At high speed, IIRC it's air resistance that limits the speed of both aircraft and land vehicles.

      I find it very difficult to believe that a large tube capable of holding a near vacuum is going to be 1/3 cheaper than traditional rail. If anything, I would think it would be 10 to 100 times as expensive as traditional rail. Traditional rail can be from $250-$500 per foot not including land acquisition, crossings, bridges, signalling, sidings, etc.

The hyperloop plans don't aim to replace freight rail; their target is passenger transport, which means they don't have to support as much weight. When the weight per unit area you need to support is smaller, things get cheaper.

    It seems like they'd want to be close together. Unless they hate each other for terrestrial nationalist reasons. But once you're on Mars, you're a Martian. You're not coming back to Earth. So why not make friends?

      It seems like they'd want to be close together. Unless they hate each other for terrestrial nationalist reasons. But once you're on Mars, you're a Martian. You're not coming back to Earth. So why not make friends?

      If the colonists want to be close to each other, they'd just build one single city. Assuming there's more than once city at all, I'd say they are likely to be far apart, because you'd locate them convenient for the resources on the planet, not convenient for the other cities.

      My guess is you'll have one city near a deposit of volcanic material, where they can mine for heavy metals (there be gold in them thar hills!), another near the pole to tap into the frozen water reserves, maybe another at the equator with a massive solar farm to take maximum advantage of the suns rays, etc. It depends what resources they find and where, but they're going to be well spread out.

      And yes, they probably would co-operate and be friends, if for no other reason than they're going to need each other's resources.

      It seems like they'd want to be close together.

      You'd stick the habitation where there are resources you need. If you can't find all the resources you need in one place then you will have to have habitats spread out and sharing those resources between bases.

      For Example, Water collection near the poles, but Solar power collection and orbital launch pads near the equator.

      That doesn't necessarily mean the other habitats are were someone would live permanently, especially not if you have good transport links. I see it more like Oil Rig work, people are shipped out to the supporting bases for fixed periods of time then shipped back to the main base whether living conditions are less sparse (relatively speaking)

      It depends on what they are for; which isn't really entirely explained as yet.

      If they are for science or mining, they probably would be far apart: stuff worth studying or digging up is presumably distributed quite widely and you would want people to be comparatively close to their job sites, to the degree that you can manage it while still taking advantage of the efficiency of high density habitats(when you need everything airtight and on life support, suburban sprawl gets expensive).

      If they are for some other purpose, or just providing nearer-than-earth monitoring of the robots, you'd presumably see more advantages to being near the neighbors than near the work area.

      The Hyperloop loses its efficiency advantages very rapidly when it's not being run continuously, vacuum or not.

      Maybe some are near water, another one is near high-grade ore, there are stations to service travelers between them, another one is in a better launch point to orbit, etc.

    Hyperloop is too expensive on earth and we will not be on Mars for at least 30 years. Before we have two cities on Mars which are that far away that a Hyperloop would be needed to reduce travel time, it will most likely need 100 or more years.

      Mass transit on mars makes VERY little to no sense. Why on earth(hehe) would we build mars colonies far away from each other, and then connect them with bloody expensive system? Makes no sense. If mars colony will happen someday it'll be a single small "city".

      Superfast "rail" transport between big cities and from cost to coast makes a lot of sense, nevermind the technology. Once it's done it'll beat airplanes hands down, and steal cargo transports from ships, trains, and trucks. Only thing is it'll take huge amounts of capital to actually build it. Luckily there are really rich people who have big dreams of actually doing something with their money instead of just watching the pile grow. And don't understand this wrong, if it's ever finished the pile will grow like never before, but it IS a risk, and it'll be one of those "once in a decade" engineering feats. I bow before people who want to make real things like that, instead of trying to change the world by writing a damn iPhone app.

      This. Maglev is proven and can carry hundreds of people in comfort. The Hyperloop, while faster, carries only a small number of people at a time and looks rather cramped.

      What's the rush? People have built cathedrals over centuries, and they're relatively small buildings. You want to move a people to another planet, and you think you can do it in a few decades? You either need to convince over 50% of the entire freaking planet of your idea, or you haven't looked at how many zeros are on the numerical value of the distance between Earth and Mars.

      Hyperloop is too expensive on earth and we will not be on Mars for at least 30 years. Before we have two cities on Mars which are that far away that a Hyperloop would be needed to reduce travel time, it will most likely need 100 or more years.

      Notably it is also too expensive on Mars. It may cost $6B here, but it'll cost $6 trillion on Mars (my quick thumbnail estimate).

      Let's focus on getting to Mars first; if people want to ride around in a hyperloop on Mars well they'll just have to wait a few generations to get that figured out.

      It won't cost $6 billion here. Land aquisition alone will be in the billions. Terminals will cost multiple millions for small stations and hundreds of millions to billions for the LA and San Francisco terminals. Building the elevated tube system will cost easily 100 times what traditional rail cost, so figure about $80 billion for the tubes. The train capsules will cost millions each.
      Compare this to the 40 mile proposed Baltimore to DC maglev route, which at 40 miles is estimated to cost far more than $10 billion. Multiply by 10 and you have $100 billion. But maglev is a known technology, and cheaper than the hyperloop will be, so I figure the hyperloop at the very least is going to be $200 billion.

It'd make more sense to just put people in rockets and have them do a little science on their way up and down.

      And you're already have a 0.6% earth atmosphere. The trade off for 0.1% atmo of the tunnel is balanced by the compression of the front air being squeezed between tunnel and train. The 0.6% atmo drag is much lower on a surface train. You can have similar speeds on the surface.

      The ideal route, for cost and time savings, would be a disused rail line(or, at greater; but quite possibly still less than new rights of way and earthmoving, on pillars above an active rail line). The rail network has shifted some over the years; but the earthmoving done to accommodate the lines tends to persist for decades after they go idle, and they tend to run between places that are, or were, worth travelling between.

      I imagine that the magnetics and reasonably gas-tight tube would still be more expensive than conventional rail lines or even maglev; but being able to factory produce the tube segments and just plop them into place without substantial terrain rework would certainly lower the bill and build time. Like putting one of those hamster habitats together.

      Trains have to have large dedicated right of ways and require complicated construction methods (moving power lines, digging out massive amounts of material, importing massive amounts of stone, road crossings, etc) for extremely heavy vehicles. Comparatively the hyperloop design is built in a very uniform way (a set of tubes on top of some precast piers) for very lightweight vehicles. The materials themselves (steel and concrete) are probably more expensive but due to the simplicity of construction and minimal impact on land usage (much less cost for ROW purchases/easements) it could very well be much cheaper.

    I am not sure you really want to spend the resources to build / dig / lay tubes like this between settlements. You end up with a thing that can only go between those two endpoints. Since gravity is 1/3 what it is on Earth, wouldn't a jump bug (ballistic rocket type device) that can go anywhere instead of just those two endpoints be more reasonable? Sure, there are no fossil fuels, but there is plenty of hydrogen so you can make what you want or possibly just use compressed local air. Launch could also be aided by magnetic rail gun tech - although achieving any destination would mean you would need to be able to "point" (re-orient and also elevate) the rail gun and then, if you depend on the mag launch, you may need one at your destination too.

    Mars is already a giant partially evacuated tube. Why would you want to use a Hyperloop system? You could just use a regular maglev system and avoid all the issues of having to pump away the pressure wave that builds in front of the train due to it being stuck in a pointless tube. The novel part of Hyperloop is not the maglev propulsion it is the use of a tube.

    More likely you would just use a sub-orbital rocket plane system to blast your way to the next town anyway. Any early mars colony is going to have a surplus of used rocket boosters lying around, and a rather large deficit of steel and concrete production facilities.

    Since the title to this article is a question Betteridge's law states that the answer to the question must be no. So I have to come up with reasons:

    1) There's nobody on Mars to ride on a Hyperloop system.

    2) There's no manufacturing infrastructure on Mars to make one.

    3) The whole point of the Hyperloop is to cut drag by running a train in a tube under a low pressure. Since Mars has a thin atmosphere already there is no need for the tube and hyperloop = train.

I could go on but the sufficed to say the actual plane ride is a small portion of the trip. IF most of that garbage can be bypassed through a hyperloop system it will be WELL worth it on at least a regional based level. Long distance of course air-travel wins hands down at least until far in the future where presumably various hyperloop systems would be interconnected on a national/continental/global level.

    The moon would certainly have the negligible atmospheric friction thing going for it, better than Mars, even... plus the moon is a whole lot closer, cheaper to get to, and has merits of its own for having a permanent base there at some point in the future anyways (such as a lower gravity well for spaceship launches to locations much further in space), so I cannot help but think it absurd to imagine that we would develop an infrastructure sufficiently complex on Mars that could accommodate something like this before we have something no less permanent and sophisticated installed on the moon.

    Just because we've been there already does not mean there are no compelling reasons to go back.

    I'm aware of several designs for heavier than air aircraft for flight on Mars. You can most certainly fly on Mars, you need a lot lower wing loading, so a much larger surface area, but other than that, theres not really any difference. Its just like flight high up in our own atmosphere.

    Its not the moon or Pluto, it has an atmosphere. And by treating it as such, you've already show you're idea probably isn't worth discussing for the reasons your bringing it up.

    SFO's two terminals cost well over $1 billion each in inflation adjusted dollars. The new tower was $350 million. I can't find numbers on the physical plants, like the runways, but I suspect they're similar. I think $5 billion for the entire airport is not unreasonable. LAX is significantly larger and more expensive; they're spending $270 on elevator repairs alone.

    A six-lane highway costs between $10 and $26 million per mile. It's 380 miles from LA to SF, so that's $3.8 to $9 billion.

    The F-35 program is one trillion and counting.

    Sorry, but this number seems fine to me.

      SFO is one of the busiest hubs in the world; while it cost that the financial returns from the improved efficiency is measurable.

      a 6 lane highway is more valuable than rail, because it connects multiple roads providing multiple route options to individual drivers as well as truck routes for product deliveries.

      The F-35 program is a national defense initiative. While the program itself has serious technical issues the value of an advanced fighter program directly relates back to the strength of the US military which has numerous benefits in terms of implementing and backing foreign policy.

      The Hyperloop has no estimate that even comes close to payback.

      Cost isn't important, it's cost vs. return. The sheer cost vs. the return on this system is simply not there.

    I mean when we reach peak oil, which we eventually will, the price for jet fuel will climb very sharply. While hyperloop will tend to have very stable costs for decades, if the rather conservative predictions are accurate.

    Remember, $6B is not much for a project of this importance we need about $60B to fix our existing road infrastructure. And we could defer some of that by permanently closing roads or reducing lanes in favor of more traditional train lines and hyperloop. The initial investment is large compared to building roads, but the maintenance would be lower in the long term.

    The hyperloop is the next new national travel phenomenon. Here's why:

    1. Hyperloop uses electricty and can work fine without fossil fuels.
    2. Because hyperloop cars can be made an arbitrary size, security demands are much less of an issue for a vehicle carrying, say, 10 people.
    3. Because the cars travel in a tube as the technology advances they can travel at artbitrary speeds like 2k, 3k, 4k? M.P.H. With no noise impact.

    So what if it costs 6 billion per route? The cars will probably be way cheaper to make than airplanes.

    If the super big advantage of Hyperloop is that it goes through a near vacuum, and if Mars's atmosphere is a fraction of Earth's, why bother with the tunnel at all? Will it really save that much energy compared to the additional construction costs of a tube vs one or two thin metal strips?

    The latter has the additional advantage that it can be used, using existing technologies and existing standards, to carry large amounts of cargo, and that cargo can be in units up to ten and a half feet wide. Which is fairly important, if you remember that the most probable reason for having locations several hundred or thousand miles away on Mars, would be to access differing resources.

    Mars is NOT without atmosphere. It's about 1/100th as dens as that of Earth, but that's still not trivial.

    The moon has an atmosphere, too. It's density is 13 orders of magnitude down from that of Earth, which makes it a pretty good vacuum. But that's because it loses air more quickly - on GEOLOGICAL time scales - compared with Earth. On HUMAN time scales, on the other hand, things like oxygen, nitrogen, water, and carbon dioxide hang around for quite a long time. (I THINK the half-life is longer than human written history.)

    The moon's surface escape velocity is more than a fifth that of earth, and a non-trivial multiple of the speed of sound at ordinary (or even lunar) temperatures, so the molecules aren't just going to fly off any time soon. It doesn't have a magnetic field to protect it from the solar wind and its associated magnetic fluctuations. So over time scales compared to continental drift the Moon is leaky. But on human time scales it's not. Exhaust a bottle of air on the surface of the moon when your child is born and most of it will still be around when he dies of old age (assuming only current medical technology. B-) )

    This has been a planning issue for those considering lunar industrialization. Much science fiction has industrial processes on the lunar surface, for the "cheap vacuum". But both the industry itself and human habitation in general will "Pollute the Moon with Air", quickly rendering the vacuum too "dirty" for such things (though still good enough to eliminate the need for a "roughing pump" for at least decades, if that's the ONLY source of new atmosphere). That would also be very good for evacuated-passageway transport systems like Hyperloop - PROVIDED they're only using motors, not compressed air, for propulsion. B-) But...

    The length of time air would hang around has led to proposals to terraform the Moon, giving it a breathable atmosphere by crashing a LOT of icy orbital objects into it. (This, of course, would put it back to the Earth's situation. B-) )

    While it would be back to a pretty good vacuum in time scales comparable to the evolution of life, it wouldn't decay substantially for time scales comparable to A life. Even if it started to become noticeably (without sensitive instruments) thinner in a few centuries, any space-going civilization capable of GIVING it the atmosphere would be capable of maintaining it.

    I think the leakage is slow enough for civilization to fall - to stone-age levels - and rise again (maybe from descendants of apes) before it would be an issue, but I'm not sure: Looking up the half life of Lunar air loss on the net is a tad complicated: It's not talked about much. But the plotline involving an artificial Lunar atmosphere, in the game Half Life, is talked about a LOT. B-)

    Chump change! Seriously, $6B LA to SF? Bargain! Start adding up what was and is spent on aviation infrastructure and 6B will soon look like a drop in the bucket. Such vehicles, however, only make sense on routes where there's a LOT of travel. Explains why there are fairly quick and on-time trains in the Northeast and pretty much nowhere else in the US.

    What do we spend on clandestine spying that Americans are fed up with? What do we spend on policing the world? Let's defund these dubious programs and give back in ways that every American can se and benefit from.

    ...at least on earth. We can't even get proper funding for Amtrak or many other public transit organizations. The plans to build Transrapid lines across the continental US were ditched due to political unwillingness. Contrary, increasing the budget for the unsustainable and insanely expense Interstate system is not a problem. The US spends over 25 billion Dollars a year (!!!)) just for maintenance of the Interstate system, which cost in the 50s and 60s about 131 billion $ to build and law prohibits on most of the Interstates to collect toll. Spending 6 billion on a high capacity dedicated transport system between SF and LA seems not that expensive. Sure, initial expense would be big, but as a country we would be better served long term if we put down rails on one lane each direction of Interstates and have trains run. Especially freight will be a prime target which is still moved to 60% by trucks, which is incredibly expensive because trucks use more fuel and personnel than trains and are not faster long distance. Trucking will still be needed short distance, but that is where EVs come into play. A hyperloop connecting central hubs will make sense assuming that it has any significant economic benefit over rail and air travel aside from being fast. I wonder if designing low fuel consumption ultrasonic planes might be the better solution. The Concorde was popular, but expensive and with a few design flaws.
