MST3K Kickstarter Poised To Break Kickstarter Record (kickstarter.com)
New submitter the_Bionic_lemming writes: Recently Joel Hodgson, the creator of Mystery Science 3000 -- which had a successful run of over 197 shows -- has after 15 years launched a kickstarter to relaunch the series. In just over two weeks Joel has been wildly successful in not only having over 25000 fans contribute, but actually scoring the second-highest show kickstarter on record — he has just under two weeks to shoot past the Number 1 kickstarter, Veronica Mars.

Exploding kittens, a card game raised more than $8,000,000 so unless they more than triple their current backers in 11 days they dont have a chance.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
You could make a cool garrote with one of those threads. Totally invisible
I never understand the obsession with bringing things back. Your memories of the past are rose tinted and rehashes rarely live up to them.
Only because Joss Whedon hasn't done a "firefly" kickstarter !!!
Thanks for the tip!
Gets my purse. Better luck next time guys.
After it gets released we realize that we are older and the new shows just don't seem the same anymore.
Ahh nostalgia blinders the reason why crap we loved when we were young and stupid still has a place in our heart.
It is the same reason why the Tea Party has some sort of love affair with the 1950's sure we're a sneeze away from mutual destruction but the propaganda made us feel at ease.
If something is so important that you feel the need to post it on the internet... It probably isn't that important.
$500,000 per episode. Are they setting it in Downton Abbey with the complete cast?
really! don't mention it again, triggers cravings.
The comments were mostly unfunny, the profiles of the commenters were in the way, the whole thing was just downright silly and childish. What is it that so many seem to like about this junk?
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett aren't involved, so no, thanks.
Ring 2
Robocop Reboot
The Hobbit movies (specifically the last one).
Battlefield Earth
The Last Airbender
I, Frankenstein
I'd put in $500 to make it happen.
I love MST3k, but this is a horribly designed Kickstarter.
It seems much more like an Indie-go-go campaign of "please give us money for nothing".
Which is fine, people are free to do that.
But Kickstarter is for pre-selling a product.
As is, their "reward tiers" are currently:
$25 for time locked access to the first premiere episode in real time.
$35 to have access to the first episode whenever you like.
$100 for access to all episodes.
They are going to be in big trouble with their backers when they make this and then try to sell access to it on iTunes/Amazon, because they will have to price it far cheaper than any of those.
$25 for limited access to one episode? Hotels don't charge that much for a pay-per-view movie.
$35 to own a digital copy? The Avengers: Age of Ultron is less than half of that on Amazon/iTunes.
Kickstarter "rewards" are supposed to be rewards, not punishments.
he has just under two weeks to shoot past the Number 1 kickstarter, Veronica Mars.
The important thing is that no one seems to have learned the lesson that the Mars kickstarter taught, that giving your hard earned money to Hollywood fat cats will enrich them and that promises made to you will be broken.
I'm an American. I love this country and the freedoms that we used to have.
He keeps adding to the existing rewards, though. The $35 dollar level, for instance, now comes with 6 episodes of the original show (which retail at $10 / episode) as well as the first episode of the new series. Every level above $35 basically includes every level below them, so by the time you get to the $100 level, you get 6 episodes of the old series, all the episodes of the new series, a T-shirt, a coffee mug, your name in the credits and various other tchotchke. He's also added some other non-KS items that will be rolled into the final budget (e.g., you can buy all 87 available episodes of the original series for $150 today and the $150 counts toward the total). He hasn't figured out how to add the non-KS revenue to the KS page, but has been letting people know the totals as the project progresses.
$100 is obviously overpriced if you are only interested in viewing whatever number of new episodes (6, 9 or 12) finally get produced - Vimeo will stream them for $3/episode probably - but for fans that want new content produced and own the episodes and the other swag, it's not bad for KS.
Some people seem to think you need a complete product that you cannot afford to mass produce. Somethings are from people making something for themselves, and opening it up to others to get in on, which would be difficult to otherwise obtain. Here is an example of a cosplay helmet/costume that would otherwise be unavailable: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2126202269/frontier-buccaneer-3d-printed-cosplay-prop-helmets
Just wanted to point out that, even though they're raising a lot relative to kickstarter standards, they still need a lot of money to make their funding goal of 5.5 mil. I pledged because I loved that show. Hope other people consider doing so as well.
