MST3K Kickstarter Poised To Break Kickstarter Record (kickstarter.com)
New submitter the_Bionic_lemming writes: Recently Joel Hodgson, the creator of Mystery Science 3000 -- which had a successful run of over 197 shows -- has after 15 years launched a kickstarter to relaunch the series. In just over two weeks Joel has been wildly successful in not only having over 25000 fans contribute, but actually scoring the second-highest show kickstarter on record — he has just under two weeks to shoot past the Number 1 kickstarter, Veronica Mars.
Being the first Kickstarter to deliver a product instead of wasting all the money?
Lots of board-games has been released and used Kickstarter.
Did you simply ignore the Kickstarter that currently holds the number 1 spot, the Veronica Mars movie which not only was delivered but made money!
"second-highest _show_ kickstarter on record"
So it's like the hyperqualified sports "records" we hear:
"And that's the most goals in a fortnight scored under a waxing gibbous moon on Thursdays from the left side of the pitch outside of 20 meters! One!!! Wow!!!"
Only because Joss Whedon hasn't done a "firefly" kickstarter !!!
don't see anyone tying you down and forcing you to watch or listen to it, so why are you bothering to complain about it?
Because it makes the world a dumber place.
"You're right," Fisheye says. "I should have set it on 'whip' or 'chop.'"
"You want a blue car? Nobody likes blue. Also, if you want a blue car, you can buy this red car. How is a blue car better then a red car?"
Or put differently: Saying one doesn't need one thing, because there is another thing that is kinda-sorta the same except it is different ist a strange argument.
You may like rifftrax more than mst3k, but that doesn't mean that everybody has to share your opinion. Stay with riftrax and let everyone who want's to support mst3k.
You're not losing anything by both existing in parallel.
Disclaimer: I don't know rifftrax and I don't care about mst3k.
Now that's fscking funny. Don't worry buddy, there is nobody here who knows how to take down a website!

$500,000 per episode. Are they setting it in Downton Abbey with the complete cast?
Your opinion? Well, thats something I can agree with...
Thumbs up! (no mod points this week)
Don't worry, you can see the new brand of B and C rated actors when this launches and realize how terrible it really will be. They even have Felicia "Around Gamers never relax" Day in it.
Om, nomnomnom...
Wow. Any way to shoehorn in your politics, huh? That's what makes you boring. People are just sick of it.
On a side actually related to the topic at hand; I still like to watch a couple episodes here and there. What made the original production die was the way that Comedy Central and The Sci-Fi Channel both have a way of beating their shows to death. Both channels ran the show 4-6 times a day at one point. That's 33-50% of your daily programming taken up by a single show. Back in those days people actually got sick of it and walked away, today it's the entire business model of some networks like HGTV and the Food Network.
All in all, it could be ok. I'd certainly take a look but the one concerning point I have is that it's Joel. Joel wasn't as good as Mike to begin with and he's so far removed from the program that it could either be a curse or a blessing. Only time will tell.
Yeah, I hate to say it, but I don't particularly relish the idea of an aging Joel or Mike besmirching the memory of the original by attempting to reclaim the old magic. There have been very few reboots that have worked (Battlestar Galactica), but the vast majority that have failed miserably (pretty much everything else).
Even stuff that should have been bulletproof (like animated shows, where the cast never ages) have mostly failed. When Futurama came back, it was a sad shell of its former self. And Beavis and Butthead seemed completely out of place in a world where music videos are no longer even on TV, and in a time when kids barely even still watch TV anyway. Sure Family Guy worked, but it had only been gone for a few years and they were able to get the entire team back together again pretty easily.
Most of the time it's better to go out on top of your game and move on. Did MST3K still have some years left in it when it was cancelled? Absolutely! Are those lost years still reclaimable in 2015? Probably not.
SJW's don't eliminate discrimination. They just expropriate it for themselves.
In what way is making fun of dumb movies impossible today? It's a rich source of comedy. Oh, and major dick move putting politics in there, it is hatred like that that keeps alternative choices alive and well. Anything that the mainstream despises so publicly must be worth checking out.
Shutting down free speech with violence isn't fighting fascism. It IS fascism!
Has there been a single video game that was Kickstarted that didn't get reviewed terribly, though?
Maybe not, but I think in some cases that might be more a problem with the backers than with the project, especially if we're specifically talking about the sequels to classic and beloved games of the 80's and 90's. Some of those seem to be pretty faithful to the spirit of the original game. If fans of the original still hate them, maybe it's because what they somehow thought they were paying for was not another video game but, rather, being young again. Which, of course, Kickstarter can't help with.
Exploding kittens, a card game raised more than $8,000,000 so unless they more than triple their current backers in 11 days they dont have a chance.
Exploding Kittens made eight million dollars? Wow. That game is like War without the strategic depth. People basically paid 8 million dollars for the words "Exploding" and "Kittens" and about sixteen doodles of cats.
If that's all it takes, I too have an idea for a card game Kickstarter. So, the formula seems to be that something bad ("exploding") has to happen to something that most people like ("kittens"). Hmm, okay... how about... um.... Steadily Declining... uh... Grandmas?
Wait, wait! I know it sounds depressing, but you haven't seen the pictures yet! They're really... well, actually, they're pretty bleak too. Hey, this is harder than it sounds.
The comments were mostly unfunny, the profiles of the commenters were in the way, the whole thing was just downright silly and childish. What is it that so many seem to like about this junk?
"I have a great sense of humor! I just don't like things that are silly and childish! Like jokes! I defy you explain to me why jokes are funny!"
I did. Joel seemed to try to apply the brakes to comments that weren’t PG rated by Bill & Kevin. Mike was more appreciative of Kevin and Bill's wit when it went over that, making the later MST3K episodes with Mike much funnier in my opinion, which carry to the RiffTrax efforts.

but I don't particularly relish the idea of an aging Joel or Mike
Nonsense. They're just as funny as ever. Ageist.

It won't be either. They're not ruling out the old characters making cameos or something, but they're getting a new, younger host (some comedian) and a couple other new people to play the bots. Joel's mostly just running the show.
Breakfast served all day!
Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett aren't involved, so no, thanks.
From the summary
SHOW kickstarter. It's the 2nd highest show kickstarter. Second to Veronica Mars at the moment
.
Just another second banana
I'm always desperately confused by Exploding Kittens. Everything I saw in the kickstarter was that it wasn't a fun game. Then when they finally released gameplay videos. I was still lost as to why I would want it. And yet it kept making more and more. But that's a fairly accurate description. "War without the strategic depth". I'm gonna steal that.

Yeesh. How hard is to to post some actual information:
Jonah Ray is the new "Joel."
Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn are the new Crow and Servo.
Felicia Day and Patton Oswald are the new Mad Scientists.
The only thing worse than a Democrat is a Republican.
he has just under two weeks to shoot past the Number 1 kickstarter, Veronica Mars.
The important thing is that no one seems to have learned the lesson that the Mars kickstarter taught, that giving your hard earned money to Hollywood fat cats will enrich them and that promises made to you will be broken.
I'm an American. I love this country and the freedoms that we used to have.
He keeps adding to the existing rewards, though. The $35 dollar level, for instance, now comes with 6 episodes of the original show (which retail at $10 / episode) as well as the first episode of the new series. Every level above $35 basically includes every level below them, so by the time you get to the $100 level, you get 6 episodes of the old series, all the episodes of the new series, a T-shirt, a coffee mug, your name in the credits and various other tchotchke. He's also added some other non-KS items that will be rolled into the final budget (e.g., you can buy all 87 available episodes of the original series for $150 today and the $150 counts toward the total). He hasn't figured out how to add the non-KS revenue to the KS page, but has been letting people know the totals as the project progresses.
$100 is obviously overpriced if you are only interested in viewing whatever number of new episodes (6, 9 or 12) finally get produced - Vimeo will stream them for $3/episode probably - but for fans that want new content produced and own the episodes and the other swag, it's not bad for KS.
I guess you're not familiar with Rifftrax, because the "aging" Mike, Kevin and Bill are doing quite well for themselves.
Furthermore, the show will now have a completely different cast. I think it's an incredible opportunity to see what a whole new crew of people can do under the guidance and aegis of the guy who created the whole concept in the first place.
Sit it out if you want, but don't bash it until you've given it a chance.
Seeing as how you are someone who is praising "Family Guy", I find it really difficult to give any credit to your ability to judge what's good or not.
You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.
Joel never really did any episodes with Bill Corbett as Crow. You're probably thinking of Trace Beaulieu, who also played Dr. Forrester.
I never understand the obsession with bringing things back. Your memories of the past are rose tinted and rehashes rarely live up to them.
Individual opinions/tastes may vary, there are numerous examples of commercially successful "reboots" like, Transformers, Legos, Dr. Who, Le Miserables, Battlestar Galactica, anything Shakespeare, Mad Max, Star Wars, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, and more.... Sometimes history/nostalgia can be a foundation to launch into something new and suitable for modern times. It all depends on the implementation.
It's fine to be skeptical of a MST3K reboot and not back the Kickstarter, but let's not be overly-pessimistic and rule it out as a failure before a show is even made.
Just wanted to point out that, even though they're raising a lot relative to kickstarter standards, they still need a lot of money to make their funding goal of 5.5 mil. I pledged because I loved that show. Hope other people consider doing so as well.
Has there been a single video game that was Kickstarted that didn't get reviewed terribly, though?
What the fuck are you even talking about?
May we live long and die out
Has there been a single video game that was Kickstarted that didn't get reviewed terribly, though?
Divinity: Original Sin?
In the future: Divinity: Original Sin 2?
Yep - both video games I helped Kickstart released. One had to split into episodic content to get out on time and the other was late (not too bad - a couple of months), but they both got released.
> Has there been a single video game that was Kickstarted that didn't get reviewed terribly, though?
You mean like Divinity: Original Sin I and II, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun Hong Kong, FTL: Faster Than Light, Pillars of Eternity (from Project Eternity), Republique, Jotun, Sunless Sea, Double Fine Adventure and Dreamfall Chapters (both episodic and unfinished, but favorable reviews so far), Elite: Dangerous, and Mercenary Kings?
Maybe you're one of those people that think only shooters are real games (and my brother-in-law is one of those) - in that case, I haven't heard of any. RPGs and adventure games by the boatload though, with a few action games thrown in.

It reminds me a lot of UNO, but even simpler. There's not much strategy or learning curve, so it's good for playing a quick game with people who are new to it.
Stop! Dremel time!
