China Launches Dark Matter Space Probe (nature.com)

hackingbear writes: China's Dark Matter Particle Explorer Satellite Wukong, named after the fictional character Monkey King, was successfully launched at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gansu province on Thursday. The probe will be in service for three years to observe the direction, energy and electric charge of high-energy particles in space in search of dark matter. Two further missions will blast off next year: the world's first quantum-communications satellite and an X-ray telescope observing in a unique energy band. Together, these missions mark a new start for space science in China which previously focused on non-science missions, says Wu Ji, director-general of the National Space Science Centre (NSSC).

      Your whole premise is wrong because there are methods of detecting photons that do not involve large jumps in energies, with multiple continuum methods working from the microwave region on to high energy gammas. And if you're the same guy who has been for years posting quantum is wrong because of a severe lack of understanding the variety processes photons are involved in, you should have learned about this by now as it has been pointed out by replies many times by multiple people.

      Are you *accepting* then that the electronic methods DON'T work? i.e. that all the experiments involving photomultipliers are by definition using a detector that involves the electron gaps?

      Because you'll have a much better understanding of it, if you're accepting that basic premise.

      So for example, GP, suppose you accept the problem with electronic detectors (independent of claims that other smooth experiments back it up, all I ask if that you accept that there is this fault with this detection method, ergo experiments based on that detector show this fault).

      So look at Wheelers Choice, which was claimed from the basic two slits experiment everyone knows. If that two slit experiment is flawed, then light has BOTH wave and particle like properties AT THE SAME TIME, hence Wheelers choice becomes false because no selection is made. It is not EITHER wave OR particle, it has both properties.

      Wheelers Choice 101: Light is detected either as a wave or a photon (particle). In a two slit experiment it must be a wave because it goes through both slits. But stick a photomultiplier in front of those slits and its seen a bursts of light, i.e. particles or photons. Since these are indivisible, it cannot be going through both slits and is no longer a wave.

      But that means that BEFORE it hit the detector it changed from wave to particle depending on the type of the detector it was going to hit. And it coud be changed mid-flight as the detector is changed from slits to photo multiplier back to slits before the light arrives. Since it hasn't hit the detector yet (the point of time is in the future), Wheeler proposes "reverse time causality" where future events on the light set its past state as either wave or energy.

      I simply point out that the detector is electronic, it promotes an electron, it cannot detect energy that could not promote an electron. So seeing flashes of light is what you'd see with a device that can't see less than 1 electron orbit promotion.

      Hence it makes no selection, the detector simply imposes its limits on the measurement. Hence no reverse causality, no entanglement etc.

      I'm not asking you to lose ALL your beliefs, just to accept the problem, and from that we can move forward. Lose the obvious faulty experiments and the nonsense that has stemmed from those and it all becomes clearer.

      Depending on exactly what kind of electron source and voltage you use, a pm tube gives you a continuum measurements of electron energy. If there was a problem with photon energy dropping too low, you could watch the energy drop down to the threshold. But that is not seen in a double slit setup where you see a single enegy well above the threshold. Doesn't matter how brilliant you think your idea(s) are if it contradicts observations, and taking the time to learn what observations have been made already would save you a lot of time going off on unrealistic tangents.

      There's lots of dark matter, 85% of the universe according to the article, and it is hard to find, which is why we have to send a probe to space to look for it. In this case, they will really be collecting data on high energy cosmic rays. Some theories about dark matter suspect that in can interact with itself or with regular matter and produce cosmic rays. The chance if it doing so is very small, but there is so much of it, it hopefully happens in detectable amounts. So, what they are probably doing is collecting data on cosmic rays that can't otherwise be explained and looking for an origin in the same location as where we suspect dark matter to be.

      That's more ignorance than evilness. We'd be dropping those things all over the place if they acted like really big conventional weapons (which is what they were wanting at the time.)

      The effects of radiation and fallout weren't really known back when the bombs were dropped (well I'm sure there was some scientists ranting about it but we all know how selective the government's hearing is when it comes to scientists telling them they're being stupid -- climate change anyone?)

      And its those effects, not the killing horrific numbers of people (which was the whole point of course) that has earned nuclear weapons (and unfortunately, nuclear power and basically anything else with the word nuclear in it) their current stigma of being the evilest of evils.

      All that said, you're point still stands -- all governments tend to be fairly similar when looking at them from a global scale, regardless of their internal policies.

    They're doing an entanglement test.

    No it can't, because the link between the two photons is the observer. Typically they filter the data from photon sets 2 for the result from photons set 1. Which means you need the data from photon set 1 back at your base location, sent at the speed of light.

    It's bogus, if you look at the latest Delft 'entanglement' test, they entangle two x-ray photons, which really means filtering out any that don't have the same spin. So they only consider the tests where the x-rays had the same spins, which they then used for a bells test, to prove that the electrons that emitted them had the same spin, which they then claim as entanglement.

    But for that you would need to get the data on entanglement test back to your location, to do the filtering, so this BOGUS effect is limited by the time it takes to get the result data back to the observer to fix up the data set by filtering it for photons with the same spin!!

    Look at the Delft experiment to understand why the Chinese have been suckered. The Delft 'loophole free' entanglement experiment:

    Electron Alice emits a photon, which heads to location X
    Electron Bob, far away emits a photon which heads to location X
    Photon Alice and Photon Bob are 'entangled' at X ***
    Electron Alice is then measured for spin, and electron Bob has a complementary spin by 'spooky distance effect'.

    The claim is that by measuring electron Alice's spin, that *sets* electron Bob's spin to the complementary spin.

    **** However, at the X, this is really a filter. The two photons are interacted, and only if they have complementary spins, is the experimental result used. If they have different spins, then the result is discarded as a failed entanglement!

    So the result from the X test would need to be known at both Alice location and Bob location to fixup the experiental result.
    So you could never transmit information by this effect.

    It's also really bogus, Delft claims it tests entanglement, yet they filter for 'entanglement' at X, and only the photons with the same property are counted in the experiment! All they really test there is, does an electron with a spin, impart that spin on photons it emits, and the answer is yes.

    I think I was probably high when thinking about it.. but would this be a feasible explanation for dark matter/energy? Disclaimer, I know nothing about physics, I've just picked up some stuff from reading here and there. And I am sure every one can poke holes in this, I can. But, can it be feasible?

    I'll just give an example I guess of my thinking. When looking from one galaxy to another that appears to be accelerating away, is it possible that the galaxies are actually playing tug of war with the spacetime in between them, and if spacetime is not a solid rope but a stretching malleable substance, could the stretching of spacetime cause it to look as if the galaxies are moving away from each other? So, light traveling between the galaxies would just on be stretched causing the red shift that we see as being caused by the galaxies moving apart.

    And yes, I know, this does not answer questions about all of the oddities that made us come to the dark matter/energy conclusion, e.g. stars at edge of galaxies orbiting faster than expected. Although for that.. I kind of imagining a whirlpool effect on spacetime where closer in towards the center of the galaxy spacetime is so stretched that it appears as though the stars near the center are moving much slower than they actually are which would account for the discrepancy for faster orbiting stars on the perimeter. But, this one seems to have more holes in it.

    I always hated the dark matter/energy explanation and it just feels like pulling some random variable out of ones ass to balance equations.

That is pretty much what is happening except it doesn't so much stretch but rather all space is expanding at every location. Gravity can still overcome this though, Andromeda is for an example headed right for us.. As for dark matter/energy, that was basically how they were first theorised.. As models didn't add upp scientists figured that more mass was the only explanation and since it can't be seen it was called dark matter, at least we now know dark matter exists. Dark Energy also came about when people looked at the rate of expansion in the universe and saw that it was increasing rather than decreasing which it should've been doing according to the models at the time...

    I think I also have a better thought experiment to show why entanglement could never carry information.

    I will pretend entanglement is real. Consider 'Quantum Eraser' as a proof of entanglement.

    Two detectors, DP and DS. If entanglement is real, then the act of detecting 45 degree photons at DP causes the photons at DS to be 45 degrees polarized.
    DP and DS are connected by a 'Concidence circuit' which selects only the experimental result at DP when a photon is detected as DS.

    Now suppose DS and DP are separated by light years.
    So we use the polarizer as a semaphore, putting it into the stream and removing it, sets the property of the light measured light years away, 'instantaneous'.

    So now place DS and DP close together. Put the conincidence circuit on Mars. Now you put the filter in front of DS but the result isn't know till both DS and DP signals reach Mars and the result comes back from Mars. Photons are detected at DP, but they don't correlate to interference fringes, they are more like noise. Until you get the result back from the coincidence circuit, you don't know which photons to pay attention to.
    Hence the 'entanglement' actually happens in the coincidence circuit.

    So even assuming entanglement is real, it could never be used to carry information and this chinese experiment could never have been devised to test this.

    (But it also shows the bogus nature of the experiment, the coincidence circuit could be *removed* while the data is on its way to mars, the detection has aready happened, yet no entanglement can be detected!).

NASA noticed something that tiny and verified it with calculations. If dark matter existed, wouldn't that have had a similar pull on one of the probes? It traveled through the entire solar system and saw absolutely no gravitational interference at all from unknown mass. I'd consider that a pretty effective probe that's accidentally looking for dark matter.

      It's a good questions. I would bet, especially with the that latest theories that passage of the sun and planets through the dark matter cloud would cause some high density filaments to form, like wake from the passing boat. Somebody could get the voyager data, look for deviations in expected movement, figure out the suspected location of filaments at the time, do the gravitational equations for the filaments, and see if the math fits the data. Problem one is that is all on current understanding which no doubt will need to be tweaked, but this might be the things that allows us to tweak it. So much work that doing so could probably be somebodies entire college career. Problem two, is that is a whole lot of work involving celestial mechanics, suspected behavior of dark matter in both our solar system and beyond and the gravitational fields caused by such as functions of time, distance, angular movement of planets, and motion of the sun through the galaxy. Then you have to hope the the accuracy of the measurements of the position of the probes is good enough to detect any effect. The general acceleration of the probe over its lifetime is doable because we can figure it out over long periods of time. In this case, we would need veery detailed measurements over much shorter periods of time as we're with changes on a smaller scale.

      That puts limits on the amount of dark matter that can be in something of a clump near Voyager's trajectory, but observing spacecraft movement is a very, very inexact way to measure gravity. Moreover, dark matter doesn't interact with itself like normal matter does, so it doesn't clump on this scale. If dark matter were evenly distributed, it would not have a significant effect on spacecraft movement. It's also very sparse, so the total amount in the Solar system may be well below what we could detect gravitationally. Normal matter clumps to form stars and planets and stuff, so the mass density of the Solar System is far more than that of a random equal-sized volume nearby. Dark matter doesn't, so the density should be roughly the same through the local stellar neighborhood, meaning darn little that a spacecraft would be close to anyway.

      The EM force is also significantly stronger than gravity -- the effect of those few infrared photons is probably millions of times more powerful than any gravitation you'd feel from dark matter (or real matter, for that matter.. Remember there's still dust and other shit here and there in space that will all be exerting gravitational pull but its so small that its undetectable.)

      EM is something like of 10^36 times more powerful than gravity http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/forces/couple.html (I'm not 100% sure how the coupling constants relate to measured strength but at that scale difference, being off by a few orders of magnitude won't affect my argument..)

      That is to say, you'd need a _hell_ of a lot of unaccounted gravity to match even the tiny effect of a few photons bouncing around. That's why experiments searching for gravitational waves and the such have to be so incredibly precise and eliminate near to 100% noise -- the signal is just so damned weak.

      Try some actual numbers, as dark matter is really spread out. Even normal matter works out to a really low average density across the galaxy. Assuming dark matter is evenly spread out (when most models predict it is less dense near the center of the galaxy that outside it), I get a mass of about 10^16 kg within the solar system out to the distance of Voyager. That is on the order of pars per billion of Earth's mass, smaller than our uncertainty of Earth's mass, let alone the Sun's. That is only two order of magnitude above the mass of many comets, and it is not like we get a good estimate of their number and location from gravity.

      I don't know why they would. China might still be semi-communist and definitely has a bad track record for human rights, but for all of that they're still a billion people with a billion sets of hopes and ambitions. There are lots of scientists in China that do their work because they believe it will help humanity, just as there is plenty of them elsewhere with that belief.

      Similarly there will be people in government who are looking further to the future than the next war and will be willing to back funding for pure research projects, just as there is elsewhere in the world.

      There's no reason to assume that every single thing China does is gearing towards a war with the US (who's probably about the last country China would want to fight anyway.. attacking your biggest trading partner for no reason other than that they're big seems like a less than intelligent thing to do even if you ignore the relative military strengths and for all the atrocities in China, they're not generally stupid.)

    I just read an (old) article this morning about using gold and DNA to detect dark matter.

    I'm not a physicist and really know nothing about the subject, but it would be interesting to know if the Chinese are attempting to detect dark matter using the aforementioned substances.
