Nicely done. As a kid when this came out i cringed at the aliasing effects of this fake-3D rotations on the SNES. Always fascinating to see old hardware/software being updated to bring it up to modern times. Brings back memories. I miss my Amiga computer.
It's a fascinating study and i applaud Finland for this experiment. But i wonder if the psychology of these people will change as they get use to this basic income, and then, over time, they take it for granted and even forget it is there. In other words, will they return to a state of depression over time?
GIF has not changed much in tech since 1989 (it was developed in 1987). For most of its existence it had been pronounced with a soft g, like "jif". That means that in its 32 year existence MOST people had called it with a soft-g. Meaning, gif wasn't simply invented recently as a way to pass animated memes on social media.
Anyway, it wasn't until gif's resurgence in popularity among the (primarily) Millenials to pass animated imagery via instant messaging and other social media that its pronunciation was rechristened by them to be a hard "G", because after all "GIF" looks like the shortened version of "GIFT" and they are kinda/sorta receiving a gift from a friend when they get an animated surprise message! Hooray!
Gif's CHANGED pronunciation -- to be a hard-G -- is actually a new occurrence in Gif's very long history. And so, for the young generation to think they somehow invented gif and now are trying to "teach" others how to pronounce it correctly kinda seems comical.
This whole mess could have been averted if APNG replaced the aging and horribly inefficient Gif. APNG is a better format. Yes GIF and APNG are both lossless, but APNG has much better compression, supports 24-bit color (gif only supports 256 colors), 8-bit transparency, and of course animation, but with much more granular control and options. It's also supported in all major browsers. But yet GIF just won't die already.
He explains the illogic of when people say "since G stands for Graphical, therefore its a hard G". And gives a lot of irrefutable examples.

The problem with that idea is that what may be a hit today may not be a hit tomorrow. Gamers eventually get bored of an idea and move on to the next.
Remember when zombie games were the rage, or the endless World War 2 games? Yes they're still here today, but they certainly arent as big as they once were, which was boiling hot, a point where Fortnite currently is today in its oversaturated Battle Royale genre market, which, by the way, is simply a tweak on the Death Match genre that John Romero coined as ID was putting together a multiplayer Doom.
Zuckerberg insight? More like a ton of expendable cash, no consequences for using it, and the increased statistical probability of hitting on a winner eventually.
The quick and dirty tip is to use “farther” for physical distance and “further” for metaphorical, or figurative, distance. It's easy to remember because “farther” has the word “far” in it, and “far” obviously relates to physical distance.
The real magic isnt that it is able to create new faces, but in fact, how it is able to more accurately blend the individual real-world body parts (ie, the eyes, hair, mouth, wrinkles all come from real-world examples) in the scene by understanding the correct lighting and textures. We have been able to randomly generate non-existent faces for decades, but doing so, so the parts blend well has always been the hard part. It's a Face-Time filter applying more passes. I still fail to understand why the buzzword: AI needs to be linked to this besides as a way to garner more interest and funding.
For historians this specific machine is important. And is why it sold for a lot. It could have sold for more if the auction was open for a few more months for others to be made aware of its existence.
It has experienced so many important points in history. For example, as we all know Grand Theft Auto, the game, was developed by Rockstar North. And Rockstar North use to be known as DMA Design. And DMA Design was a game developer that started on the revolutionary Amiga computer (which was the most powerful system by far -- well ahead of Macs and PCs) who's critical hits included Lemmings and Walker. This Amiga 3000 was used to develop those two games. And it was those hits that saved Rockstar, allowing them to grow and to soon after begin work on the Grand Theft Auto series. And the rest is history.
There are more fascinating historical events associated with this specific Amiga 3000 system, but that's just one.
... does this reporter seriously think Google was ever going to say: "We sure did try to cripple Edge! Guilty as charged! Oh and bring on the anti-trust lawsuits because we don't give a fook."
Kirk just has to do a chop to the side of the neck to put humans & aliens to sleep. I see no reason to change this tried and true galaxy-approved method.
When dealing with consumer electronics, convenience always trump all others issues.
The market will polish off the problems until it becomes good enough. And the consumer will rejoice.
It's happened before, and it will happen here as well.
Although its night a black/white thing, i notice that all those on the Left are for Net Neutrality and the vast majority of those on the Right are against it. And the worst part is when i read comments from those on the Right i get a sense they are mostly against it because those on the Left are for it. And the remaining others are against it because some leader in their group (ie, talk show host, or someone in power) told them to be against it. smh
would be to use it to remove annoying background irrelevant heavy metal music that people add to their favorite movie clips so you can actually watch and hear the real in-movie clip without the annoying distraction.
Also, on Twitch (and YT) many clips either get muted by the service because of copyright claims. Having this feature could strip out the offending sound but leave the streamer's voice (and room sounds) unscathed. Everyone wins.
SHOCKER! I remember a few Jehovah Witnesses adamantly told me that their god created planets for us humans. They thought it inconceivable that nature could do it on its own.
Every liberal economic pundit predicted this would happen. Simple economics.
Most conservatives eagerly yearned for this merger and a conservative judge allowed it to proceed. Now they are blaming Liberals for letting the merger happen. The only question this time around is, will conservatives blame Mexico or a non-white group of people for the rise in prices. That's always what it comes down to.
Lucky bastard in living outside N. America where the Amiga was viewed and treated as a TITAN in computing and gaming. As a kid i wished i lived in Europe at the time. It seemed like everyone overseas completely understood the power and potential of the Amiga. Not so much in USA though. Canada was a bit better -- many people had it here.
From following many 8-bit retro computers i'd say C64 and Amiga are the two most active. About the same level in terms of new software releases. As for new hardware though Amiga has a lot more out and coming out than C64. For many hear on/. we have had Amigas (and C64's incidentally) growing up so news like this is fantastic. Gets me more excited to buy/donate/take part in such a project because it brings back great memories. I wouldn't have known about this release if it wasnt posted here. So at least for me, this post helped.
Agreed. I tend to watch 8-bit guy, and other retro channels and its truly astonishing how much new hardware and software keep coming out for the system. I've been leaning on buying a collection of retro Amigas so i can try out this new hardware and software.
Fun fact DMA Design, since you mentioned them, renamed themselves and are now known today as Rockstar Games. The same fellas who do Grand Theft Auto. Several other game companies, who birthed on the Amiga, are still around today. Just under different names and or bought out and under a different roof (e.g. Pygnosis = SCEA, Sony's in-house Juggernaut for Playstation)
Ahh yes the wonderful memories. (I had in chron order: Amiga 500, Amiga 2000, Amiga 1000, and finally the Amiga 1200... i also ended up buying a friend an Amiga 3000 so he could do pro video work with Video Toaster, which he later repaid me -- sometime when i had the Amiga 2000. Amazing times.
If i'm not mistaken the PC was in CGA 4 color mode with beep-beep speaker sound. Mac's were in black and white. While the Amiga 500 was doing things in 4096 HAM graphics modes, full multi-tasking, and with stereo sound. Just to name of few of its brilliant architecture.
Just to show my support and respect for that machine I will go buy the game now
If you go in believing meditation will improve your life then its a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If you go in open-minded or not having much faith in it then its one of those things that just wont work.
It's a placebo.

Why does the article fail to mention the duds of Zuckerberg's acquisitions? For every WhatsApp or Instagram there are Facebook's disaster bets like:
MailRank, Nextstop, Spool, ParaKey, Snaptu, FriendFeed, Octazen, Divvyshot, ShareGrove, Zenbe, Chai Labs, Hot Potato, Drop.io, Rel8tion, Beluga, RecRec, DayTum, Sofa, Push Pop, Friend.ly, Strobe, Gowalla, Caffeinatedmind, Tagtile, Glancee, Karma, Acrylic, Threadsy

This announcement was bound to happen. It's just a shame Best Buy didn't properly position themselves 5 years ago to reap better returns.
