Pornhub Unveils Free VR Porn Channel (pcworld.com)

An anonymous reader writes from an article on PCWorld: Big-name pornography website Pornhub has partnered with BadoinkVR, an early mover and shaker in VR porn, to launch a new section dedicated to immersive adult videos, aka VR porn. "Virtual reality is the next phase in the constantly metamorphosing world of adult entertainment, and will provide users with a mesmeric experience unlike anything they've seen before," Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said in a press release. "Now, our users are not only able to view our content, but be protagonists in the experience and interact with their favorite porn stars." The videos are roughly five-minute-long trailers designed to hook you on the VR porn experience. If you want the full videos, you'll need to sign up for a subscription with BadoinkVR itself, which will unlock the service's full adult-video selection starting at $20 per month. Pornhub is giving away 10,000 free pairs of branded Google Cardboard VR glasses if you are interested in trying out the experience but lack a VR headset.

Actually, what you're seeing might well be the birth of "real" VR. Meaning VR which actually might have a chance at success. Porn sells. It sells a lot. Porn has helped to make VHS, DVD, the Internet, and really adjusted some 'blue laws' and indecency laws over the years. It has helped strengthen the freedom of the press, speech, and helped fund technologies that may have had a hard time without it.

I've been reasonably skeptical of how much or how well VR would take off this time - compared to the earlier iterations. If this is done well, if this is done at all like people are hoping, then this is likely a boon for the VR industry that they really probably weren't outwardly expressing hope for. (I'm guessing they sure as hell were hoping for it to take off but just weren't saying anything aloud and in public. There's probably a hidden memo or two out there.) It's mildly amusing but it wouldn't be the first thing to be heavily influenced by pornographic uses. Home theaters, home video recording, probably even higher-end video cameras.

Quake 2 isn't the same kind of VR that they're talking about when talking about VR headsets. If you're wondering why it took them so long to make pornographic games: you simply have never looked into the topic. I can recall pornographic video games dating all the way back to SNES. Skins/mods for Unreal Tournament games with "nude" graphics go all the way back to UT GotY, and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the same was true for every shooter that easily allowed modding.

VR headsets have failed before, which is why a lot of people are skeptical about this latest trend. Even with porn going into VR headsets, there are still the issues of motion sickness, and adverse health effects (especially related to the eyes).

Yes I know, VR headsets or cardboard boxes you stick your phone in... Someone actually had a monitor/helmet thing back in the 90s, a friend of mine had one & I tried it, not at all VR. It cost him $700! Some people got motion sickness back then, my brother was one, just playing a shooter on a CRT. What I wanna see is Snow Crash like VR dangit!

Q2 had the skins, but it really was just for laughs, nothing porno about IMO. & yea they had porn style crap video games back in the 80s, forget the name of one of them.

I took a look at it. It does not support head tracking so you get a nice 3D effect but not much in the way of "VR". Their downloadable player does not seem to support head tracking either. Also, there is no lens distortion correction and it seems to only playback a 180 degree field of view so it's pretty much just a stereoscopic movie. On the plus side, the streaming video quality in 1080p was impressive and did not appear to have any obvious compression artifacts. It's an interesting concept but still has a way to go before it feels like true VR.
