Pornhub Unveils Free VR Porn Channel (pcworld.com)

An anonymous reader writes from an article on PCWorld: Big-name pornography website Pornhub has partnered with BadoinkVR, an early mover and shaker in VR porn, to launch a new section dedicated to immersive adult videos, aka VR porn. "Virtual reality is the next phase in the constantly metamorphosing world of adult entertainment, and will provide users with a mesmeric experience unlike anything they've seen before," Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said in a press release. "Now, our users are not only able to view our content, but be protagonists in the experience and interact with their favorite porn stars." The videos are roughly five-minute-long trailers designed to hook you on the VR porn experience. If you want the full videos, you'll need to sign up for a subscription with BadoinkVR itself, which will unlock the service's full adult-video selection starting at $20 per month. Pornhub is giving away 10,000 free pairs of branded Google Cardboard VR glasses if you are interested in trying out the experience but lack a VR headset.

Actually, what you're seeing might well be the birth of "real" VR. Meaning VR which actually might have a chance at success. Porn sells. It sells a lot. Porn has helped to make VHS, DVD, the Internet, and really adjusted some 'blue laws' and indecency laws over the years. It has helped strengthen the freedom of the press, speech, and helped fund technologies that may have had a hard time without it.

I've been reasonably skeptical of how much or how well VR would take off this time - compared to the earlier iterations. If this is done well, if this is done at all like people are hoping, then this is likely a boon for the VR industry that they really probably weren't outwardly expressing hope for. (I'm guessing they sure as hell were hoping for it to take off but just weren't saying anything aloud and in public. There's probably a hidden memo or two out there.) It's mildly amusing but it wouldn't be the first thing to be heavily influenced by pornographic uses. Home theaters, home video recording, probably even higher-end video cameras.

VR porn is going to change how people use porn quite fundamentally. Because no-one else can see the screen, it will be possible to use porn in all sorts of places. Where once the kids in the living room might have avoided playing DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball or selecting the micro bikini DLC outfit, now they can do it right in front of their parents. Someone could be sat on the subway with their VR headset on (they will soon shrink in size, with basic ones being little larger than sunglasses).

Of course the potential for disaster is also quite high. You can't see other people walking into the room with the headset on. Reminds me of the joke about the kid who opens his eyes after relieving himself and finds a mug of coffee by his bed.

With the right 3D app and a good set of bluetooth headphones, it can even get quite immersive. It's definitely not as good as an Occulus Rift or another expensive VR headset, but it's very inexpensive.

Google actually published the specs so you could make one out of about $8 in parts and an old pizza box. Or you could buy a kit for about $10 on Amazon and put it together yourself. I have a couple of smartphones: an HTC One M7 (which can decode sphere mapped stereo videos with 4k x 1.5k res in hardware, but can only do about 5fps), and a newer cheaper smartphone with a full HD screen, and which can only hw decode lower resolution and has inaccurate jumpy gyroscope. I would imagine that things like the Omimo headset are something to watch for in future (where you can either connect to a PC, or stick an sd card with the 3d movie into it and have it play that. But I think we need to let the hardware side mature for a couple of years, and indeed the filming tech. That said, this is probably a far more productive avenue for them to explore than 4k, though 4k porn with interactive zoom (with or without side by side for a headset) would, again, be something to look out for.

In all these cases, I can see porn blazing a trail in many areas, and other niches of video following them in (for example videos of sports out of the mainstream -- imagine having a 3d 120fps recording of something like a squash match, though tech for this sort of thing isn't there yet). In addition, with regards to the free vs. pay model that is emerging, this is something the entire content industry needs to watch. I think the porn industry is learning that there needs to be sufficient free material to satisfy demand somewhat so as to alleviate the pressure to pirate, and high quality paid material for those willing to pay a little (and at present, for what you can get for about $100, it really is only a little).

But I think they best way to handle it is when the action is generally in one area, and the 3D allows for either atmosphere, or an entirely different area of focus. It's like being in the audience at a concert...even if you generally keep your eyes forward at the singer, it's cool to be able to see the details of the space you're in, or tracking the singer as he moves around the stage. You don't want to be constantly turning around to try to catch a view of the singer.

“Now, our users are not only able to view our content, but be protagonists in the experience and interact with their favorite porn stars.”

Really? "Interact" would suggest that one can partake in some form of activity with them (think we can figure out which) and that they'll respond accordingly. I'd hardly count being able to view different parts of an otherwise fixed video- by moving my head- as "interactive" with the performers in any meaningful sense. There's nothing there to indicate that anything like this is on the cards, however.

Unless you can at least move around within the interactive world, it's still just a jumped-up method of watching videos. Any initial popularity will quickly tail off once the novelty fades and is outweighed by the hassle of donning a f****** VR headset just to be able to look around while you jerk off.
