The Trump Administration No Longer Wants Twitter To Reveal the Owner of an Anti-Trump Account (recode.net)

From a report on Recode: The Trump administration informed Twitter on Friday that it would withdraw its demand that the social media company unmask an account critical of the president -- a move that prompted Twitter to drop its lawsuit. On Thursday, Twitter revealed that U.S. customs agents filed a legal order in a bid to get the company to reveal who is behind @ALT_USCIS -- a so-called "alt-agency" account that has been taking aim at Trump, his immigration policy and the inner workings of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

It's a bit of a stretch to call him a "successful" businessman. His record is mixed, and in a way I respect that.

His father set him up in NYC real estate in the 1970s, staking him 40 million -- the equivalent of about two hundred million today. You'd have to be a fool not parlay that into a billion by 2000, because you could do that by playing it safe putting your money in conservative, diversified portfolio.

But here's the part I respect: Trump didn't play it safe. He invested in things he loved -- like golf courses and casinos. If it were me I'd have put the money into science and tech companies, because that's what I love, but either way investing for love isn't very sound financially, and Trump needed his father to bail him out at least one point.

It's clear that Trump's career motivation has been to leave his mark on the world, and because he's not a very imaginative man he set out to do that literally. And that thirst for recogntion not surprising, given the fact that in the Trump family succession, Donald was the spare. His older brother Fred Jr. was suppose to inherit the business empire, but he was a drunk.

So the need for approval and love is hardly incongruous with Trump's background. And that need is an asset for a politician; with it he can make a genuine emotional connection with crowds of strangers; without it he comes across as aloof and phony. But Trump's need for approval is altogether too malignant for comfort.

The U.S. Customs Agency and Immigration requested the information because it appears the account owner works in the U.S. Customs and Immigration Agency. If the account owner was an employee and is using his position to undermine the policies the agency is mandated to abide by he has violated the agencies regulations that would legally support his termination from the job.

As a private individual he would be able to do any thing he wanted to but working to subvert the agency he works for from the inside is a problem. And he is not a whistle blower because the agency in question is breaking no laws when the abide by policies governing the agencies is not against the law.

And since the government agency asking for the information did file for a warrant of any kind it is highly doubtful Trump was even consulted or even aware of what the agency was doing in this particular case. No President can be aware of every single decision someone in the government is making. When Trump did become aware of the situation he instructed the agency to drop their request.

It is not his record at business that scares me, nor it is his ego, though that is horribly dangerous. What scares me is what comes from his ego. The term narcissistic sociopath comes to mind. I can't tell whether Trump saw smacking Assad down as primarily a way to change the narrative or if he actually somehow believes that a chemical weapons attack not remotely as bad as the one he told Obama to ignore somehow demands immediate action. The Syrian war is approaching half a million lives. I feel for the children. I really do, but dead is dead and these other types of bombs are hardly a kind and gentle death.

It is at least possible that he decided to act because he saw it on tv and it affected him more with him in that position. I honestly don't know. If that is the case it would imply that he is incapable of truly considering the scope of complex issues without them being spoon fed. I hope that is not true, but I fear it probably is. It is also possible that it is all an act. I really don't know, nor do I particularly care.

If he wants to do one morally non ambiguous thing, remove and terminate this travel ban nonsense. Sure the courts have stopped it, but, well, if there is one good thing that can be done is to give shelter to legitimate refuges. No one is saying to get rid of the vetting, but at 2 years it is already extreme.

Perhaps this is also why he has attacked things like the EPA? All he ever sees is the problems it caused him. Has he ever considered looking at their successes?

The tweets came from someone(s) claiming to work for USCIS, which is part of Homeland Security, so presumably they are thinking that this is a leak source or sabotage or such. It's not just a "random person on Twitter." However, as far as I know, they never said what their justification was for the summons.

Trump is perhaps not a bad man at heart; neither were Obama not Bush; and it is quite likely that Putin and Assad are caring and decent blokes somewhere inside. This is explainable as lack of thought. He felt he needed to react, but like many people he didn't think the consequences through. He's a profoundly ignorant man. Obama, although not shy about using military force, in absence of Congressional authorization attempted to use diplomacy in Syria to discourage use of chemical weapons. Clinton would simply have used force to deny Syria the use of the air assets it needs to deliver chemical weapons. Trump split the difference and ended up with an approach that has the disadvantages of both and the advantages of neither. It's a dramatic but morally timid approach that fits well with his narcissistic personality.

More so, courts & law enforcement are involved in far more than just 'crimes'.

Having not read the specific complaint seeking the unmasking, I do not know the specific legal justification being cited, but I am pretty certain the Hatch Act would apply for a start.

I imagine it's an Administrative Subpoena, they are well known as being baseless fishing expeditions for the most part. How they are constitutional is beyond me, subpoenas from what I understand were intended to compel people to show up in a full fledged court, not force people to provide private documents at the drop of a pen. I noticed this in the mainstream media. Suddenly every branch of government in the executive branch is now "The Trump Administration". Well, at least when it can be reported in a negative light. US Customs and Border Protection, which is part of Homeland Security, requested the information. We might as well just rename every single part of the Executive branch "The Trump Administration" to make the cost of printing letterheads and business cards much cheaper (you know, bulk discount).

To be fair, Trump has not staffed something like two thirds of the non-cabinet positions he's supposed to appoint (as well as making noises that he's probably not going to either.) One of his principal advisers, Bannon, is also on record about their desire to severely shrink gov and retain more control at the executive level (Kushner's massive portfolio is a good example of this.) So, unlike the more diffuse administrations of the past, control and command is very much vested in the White House, and therefore, Trump himself.

Unless these accounts were revealing classified information, who gives a shit - altUSEPA is just that an account prefixed with "altUS" not an actual official government account and no different than the accounts you or I create. There is a verification process for Twitter and such official accounts are marked as verified so it should be obvious to anyone looking at an alt account it is not verified nor official. If Twitter wants to implement a policy where alt govt accounts will NEVER be verified, so be it. But that is their choice and not the orange one.,

So we agree in free speech. However, I'm not aware of any law (The Constitution) or elsewhere that guarantees anonymity with your free speech. Although in this whole thing everyone seems to be a jerk--people are responsible for what they say. Stand up and let others know who you are. Hiding is for wimps.

This flagrant attempt to abuse executive powers for political purposes provides the perfect opportunity for a high-profile congressional investigation. Whoever gave the order to send this summons to Twitter should be fired at the very least. If it was Trump himself (who else could it be, really?) then get the impeachment ball rolling!
