A User Archived Nearly 2 Million Gigabytes of Porn to Test Amazon's 'Unlimited' Cloud Storage (vice.com)

An anonymous reader shares a report: Reddit user beaston02 was determined to find the true ceiling of Amazon's cloud storage plan, which was killed off in June. He decided to push its limits with a petabyte of porn. For reference, a petabyte is one million gigabytes. "It is nearly entirely porn," he told me in a Reddit message. "Ever since I got into computers, I found myself learning more, and faster when it was something more interesting. Call me crazy, but women interest me more than most other things on the internet and there is a huge amount of data being created daily, so it was a good fit for the project." He said it took five or six months to collect one petabyte of porn, and he stopped collecting just shy of 1.8 petabytes. How long would it take one to consume 1.8 petabytes of porn? 1.8 petabytes is about 23.4 years of HD-TV video, but webcam streams are nowhere near that quality. A few good folks crunched the numbers: 720p is about two gigabytes per hour, and at 900,000 hours, that's 102 years of straight calendar time. If the videos are even lower quality, say, 480p, that's around 0.7 gigabytes per hour, or 293 years and six months.

When working with ZFS, it's my own personal rule-of-thumb to use an SSD for the ZIL and L2ARC. Your memory might get tight, but at least you'll falling back to an SSD and not any of the conventional drives in your system.

      My sysctls are tweaked with:
      vfs.zfs.txg.timeout = 2 (helps with burstiness)
      vfs.zfs.l2arc_noprefetch = 0 (enables read ahead to the L2ARC)
      vfs.zfs.l2arc_write_boost and vfs.zfs.l2arc_write_max are also tweaked well above the default (ymmv with this, test on your own rig)
      vfs.zfs.arc_max is set in loader.conf to keep memory free. Even though ZFS is pretty good at handing back memory, this helps for my situation.

      FWIW I tried ZFS on Linux and found it very slow and it would choke under high load. Even a SATA expander to a small 4 disk chassis running RAIDz1 would have the pool to detach under high load. I've been sticking with FreeBSD for any ZFS work for a few years now. ZFS is pretty good at running stock with defaults, but when you play with deduplication, it can benefit from some gentle hand-holding.

      1. Watch an hour of porn while cycling on exercise bike. Works wonders for health and fitness.

      2. Extract frame from porn video and do observational drawing / digital painting practice from it.

      3. Spend half an hour practising one piano scale, carefully, while watching porn. (The great thing about porn here is that you don't need to use your intellect _at all_ to understand and enjoy what's going on: it's porn for fuck's sake!)

      4. Figure out how to solve some obscure problem manipulating video files, or playing them over a network some way I haven't done before. I can tell myself that if it works, there's some porn at the end of it.

      The other thing about the above, besides the sheer quantity of porn you get to watch, is that

      a. The time is spent productively, rather than just wanking into a tissue. Indeed you stop wanting to wank because you get to spend longer watching porn (in the above way) that way.

      b. Everything on the list requires focus and discipline, so your brain learns that focus and discipline is part of what porn watching involves. (The sex-seeking part of the brain is pretty fucking simple, having evolved in the early days of mammals and having had bugger all need to change its essential nature, the complex stuff being the job of the rest of the brain. It is a simple one-line brain program that goes "if( we.had(sexyFun) ) { self.reward(); } else { self.getFrustrated(); }".)

      c. The discipline drilled in via the hows of 'productive porn watching' is then strongly present _when_ faced with sexually interesting things, rather than just in the absence of sexually interesting stuff. (I know this sounds crazy, but since the brain has spent 100s of hours doing this, and 99% of the time it watches porn discipline and useful shit is there, so it just learns to accept it as part of porn watching.)

      This last one deserves a little pondering: if you get the idea that porn and self-discipline are an either/or thing, the the bit of your brain that loves porn will learn to have self-discipline. Once it does that, as soon as it gets its turn at the wheel (and with a basic survival drive like food or sex, it _will_ get its turn at the wheel), self-discipline gets switched off in the same way you learn not to squat and shit in the middle of a supermarket: by the time you reach 4, if sensibly potty- and toilet-trained, you will know when you need a shit, and where to go to do it, and how to do it when you get there, and not to do that shit anywhere else. We take it for granted, but you've had to learn shit like this, and it took time. It is no different with self-discipline around sexual matters: you need to learn self-discipline which your brain understands is not only appropriate for times when sexy stuff is absent.
