Nintendo Switch Sales Hit 10 Million Units, Could Outdo the Wii (fastcompany.com)

Nintendo's big bet on a hybrid portable and home game system is paying off, with 10 million Nintendo Switch units sold in nine months. From a report: Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told Variety that the Switch could even top first-year sales of the Wii, the company's best-selling console yet -- if momentum holds up through the holidays. Strong sales will be important for Nintendo as it tries to convince game publishers to invest in the platform, whose less powerful hardware can't always handle the same games as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation consoles.

The Nintendo fanboys can scream and mod me down but this is EXACTLY how the Wii U started, with inferior ports with lower graphics and a handful of first party titles. The first year you can't really judge as that is when the hardcore Nintendo fans are buying, all those that have every version of Mario going back to Mario Bros on the NES, the first year of Wii U really wasn't bad either and if the press hadn't shit on it out of the gate? It might have done even better...but that doesn't equal having legs.

Lets see how this thing does in year 2 when the other 2 and PC are getting much better graphics than its capable of generating, lets see how it does when the regular players figure out that top titles everyone wants like Cuphead won't be coming to Switch and lets see how those sales are this time next year when they realize they will almost never get the big titles at launch or even within a year of launch. Personally I wanted to like the Switch, I really did, but when you've had 2 consoles in a row with effectively zero third party support? You don't do shit that will make it really really hard for those third party devs to support you. Everyone else has gone X86, Nintendo went ARM and the ARM fanboys can scream and get in line to mod me down but ARM on its best day just cannot compete with X86 and this means a dev can write code and have it run on everyone BUT the Switch...now why are they gonna sink all that money to port to Switch when they can just stick with X86 and have everyone else covered?

Forget 1-2-Switch. Agreed, Nintendo shouldn't have based their ads on it.

That's a showcase game meant to serve as a display of what's possible to do with the console system that should never have been sold as a game, it's just there for developers to know the accessories and functionalities they could use for their own games.

Look for trailers of titles like Zelda Breath of the Wild, Doom, Skyrim, Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Project Arms and Nindies if you or your kids are into indie games. Should be enough of a display for what you should expect from the console/portable hybrid.

For me, it's well worth it, but I'm waiting to see if Nintendo will revise the hardware before jumping in. Either way, if you and your kids liked the games on the Wii on the Wii U, it's a no brainer. Definitely get one when you can.

Do you like Doom? Do you like Skyrim? How about being able to play them *anywhere*, *anytime*.

That is the key draw of Switch. If you are sick of the stupid ass call of booty 50 achievements just for beating the game, DLC-infested gambling garbage that is modern gaming, then Switch is a treat.

The switch is distilled Nintendo Gaming down to its basics, and (imo) at it's *most* fun.

It is so goddamned nice buying a game and there's no day 1 patches fixing what is a broken game at launch (1 or 2 games do require downloads, but it's more of an exception than the norm). [Developers have up to 32gb cartridges to release titles on]

No proprietary memory, so the cheapest SD cards you can find, you can easily use on the system. In this sense, Sony's overpriced-proprietary memory can eat shit.

If you've always hated nintendo, for whatever reason nintendo haters do, nothing short of a free blowjob from the board may convince you.

If youre sick of overly gimmicked gaming, and the hideous fucking perversion that is modern AAA game design; then you just may LOVE the Nintendo Switch.

Much like transformers, it's more than...

      >Addendum:

For your kiddos, there are a BUNCH of age-friendly titles. From Mario and LoZ (arguably one of the best), to Minecraft and Monopoly, there are plently of games for them to enjoy. If they like co-op or competitive, Mariokart 8 is fairly damned fun.
There are bound to be new Poke titles, Pokken is a great change from the old Stadium games, and you can expect a new Metroid.

+ Plenty of indie titles as well.

In other words- it's a great platform, and the titles are growing by the day.

Yes buy it. It will occupy 100% of your free time. The quality of games makes a huge difference. You need a hundred games worth 4 hours of play each, to compare to a game you'd play for 400 hours! Quality over quantity.

Get Zelda. Zelda is like 3 months of the most fascinating game play, when you realize you're finishing it at about month 2, you switch to finding all the shrines and side quests to eke out the last of the game before the big battle in the castle with Ganon. Each Zelda game is very very different even if the characters are the same.

1-2-Switch is a novelty thing, a Christmas party game no more.

For middle kids get Mario Odyssey, still playing this now, I've done the main quest thread, and now I'm going back and opening the cubes to unlock the extra moons, which in turn unlocks extra levels.... Another 2-3 months to fully do this game. Again, amazingly inventive, new, different, not a port of old game. Lots and lots of gameplay.

For younger kids get Mario Kart. Loads of fun, really easy to get into, if you have Mario Kart on the Wii that's good enough now

Splatoon.... disappointing, it has no split screen two player mode, you need 2x Switches to play it, waste of money in single player quest mode. Don't bother.

ABSOLUTELY upgrade from the Wii U. Just two titles alone have pretty much filled all my spare time since it came out, and I'm waiting/delaying to get Zelda DLC2 because I still haven't finished Mario Odyssey and don't have free time to spend on the new extensions yet.

I'm sure there are plenty of good games on Switch, but the two big mega titles they launched with it, are really taking up all my time and I haven't yet gone and looked.
