Linux Mint 19 Named 'Tara' (betanews.com)

BrianFagioli writes: Today, we get some information about the upcoming version 19 of Mint. The biggest news is that it will be called 'Tara.' If you aren't aware, Mint's distros are always named after a woman.

Clement Lefebvre, Linux Mint leader, shares the following information: "The development cycle only just started so it's a bit early to give details about Linux Mint 19, but here's what we can say already: Linux Mint 19 is estimated to be released around May/June 2018. Linux Mint 19.x releases will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and supported until 2023. Linux Mint 19.x will use GTK 3.22. GTK 3.22 is a major stable release for GTK3. From there on, the theming engine and the APIs are stable. This is a great milestone for GTK3. It also means Linux Mint 19.x (which will become our main development platform) will use the same version of GTK as LMDE 3, and distributions which use components we develop, such as Fedora, Arch..etc. This should ease development and increase the quality of these components outside of Linux Mint."

However, I realized later that I didn't like the way Mint handled kernel updates, e.g. for the serious dirtyCOW bug, there was nothing to indicate that you were running a vulnerable kernel unless you did your own tests and the 'bad' kernel was still shown as the most recent 'recommended' one. Ubuntu on the other hand will always give you security updated kernels as a default among the other updates. Some of the major application improvements I find in Mint is a file manager that's more customizable, informative and friendly towards keyboard navigation. There's also an update manager that will give more details about package origins, version numbers, changelogs with CVEs resolved, and their level of stability, e.g.: https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-c.... This as opposed to Ubuntu which wants you to install everything immediately.

Any opinions why one should prefer Mint over Ubuntu or Cinnamon over Mate?

Development on both MATE and Cinnamon is mainly done by developers on the Linux Mint project. The basic purpose of Linux Mint is "Ubuntu with a better desktop".

The Mint project was not particularly famous until Ubuntu switched from the GNOME desktop to Unity. At that point, Mint became the top distribution on DistroWatch. (I just checked and it still is.)

The modern GNOME desktop has its fans, but it's completely different than anything else. If you want to use Linux with "classic" desktop, Mint is your best choice.

As to MATE vs. Cinnamon: MATE is based on the original GNOME 2 desktop, and includes a level of UI polish that I personally appreciate. Cinnamon is a set of customizations to the modern GNOME desktop to make it act in a more classic way. Arguably Cinnamon is the future, but every time I try it out, I get annoyed with something or other, so I'm still running Mint with MATE.

As an example of what I mean by a "classic" desktop: Mint provides windows that have minimize, maximize, and close buttons; and a "window list", a panel widget that has one button in it for each window you have open. Modern GNOME, in contrast, provides only a close button, and provides no window list at all; instead it provides a totally unique way to group a few windows together, which is called a "workspace".

When GNOME 3.x first shipped with the GNOME Shell, it offered a new way of working and at the same time it was very difficult to customize it to work more like GNOME 2.x used to work. That's why Mint became such a big deal. I think these days it's easier to make a GNOME 3.x desktop work the way you like, but it's still more convenient go grab Mint Cinnamon if what you want is a "classic" desktop running on GNOME 3.x.

Eh, ymmv. Mint is more focused on providing a very stable, very polished experience. It does not necessarily update when Ubuntu updates. You could think of Mint as being a kind of Ubuntu LTS release. In fact, the next Mint will be based on an Ubuntu LTS release. So, if you have newer hardware, you may want Ubuntu instead for a newer kernel and better driver support (along with newer versions of your fav. software). I personally prefer Ubuntu because it is more cutting edge with Nvidia drivers, Wayland support, and newer Kernels. I have used Mint in the past on older hardware, and it was beautiful. Now I use Ubuntu with Cinnamon -- though you should know that Cinnamon on Ubuntu doesn't have the polish or all the features of Cinnamon on Mint. So, I sometimes boot to Gnome on Ubuntu -- mostly to test out Wayland support.

As for Cinnamon vs Mate -- you're really comparing a Gnome 3 fork to a Gnome 2 fork. Cinnamon has more features, but takes up more resources. I'd prefer Cinnamon -- but on older, slower machines with limited RAM, Mate is pretty darned nice. I also keep Mate installed just in case I have an issue with another DE.

I like to test bleeding edge development builds of Ubuntu, so I get my fair share of bugs & so it's great to have a backup DE like Mate to switch to if a bug won't let me load into Gnome or Cinnamon.

Notes on Cinnamon -- before Cinnamon 3.2, it was really buggy and crashed often on multiple systems I had it on. It used to leak memory like crazy and have to be re-started... but after 3.4, it was rock solid and gorgeous. I think it's up to 3.7 now.

Notes on Mint -- I had an issue where I couldn't enable Zram a couple years back b/c it wasn't supported on the kernel that came with Mint -- or any that were in the Mint repo. So, I installed a newer kernel... I think 3.14 manually... got that working properly. Then, I had an issue with VLC playing a x.264 file that a newer version of VLC fixed... but, I had to manually install the newer VLC b/c it wasn't in Mint's repo. Same thing for a driver issue... Eventually, I had SO MANY bits of software that I was updating manually for compatibility reasons (like having the same versions of LibreOffice as another machine, etc.), that I ended up adding the entire Ubuntu current repository to Mint... which merged Mint with Ubuntu -- and that worked for a bit... until I got some nasty dependency issues as my hybrid Franken-Mint-Ubuntu had issues with some updates and changes. Ended up wiping it and just installing Ubuntu with Cinnamon since obviously I couldn't live with plain vanilla Mint.

You may have no issues at all for what Mint has to offer -- especially since it's caught up to Ubuntu for the next release... but, as things drift, you may change your mind. Depends on whether you're an LTS kinda person or a twice yearly release kinda person -- or like me... a twice yearly on some things, rolling release or development on others.
