Linux Mint 19 Named 'Tara' (betanews.com)

Clement Lefebvre, Linux Mint leader, shares the following information: "The development cycle only just started so it's a bit early to give details about Linux Mint 19, but here's what we can say already: Linux Mint 19 is estimated to be released around May/June 2018. Linux Mint 19.x releases will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and supported until 2023. Linux Mint 19.x will use GTK 3.22. GTK 3.22 is a major stable release for GTK3. From there on, the theming engine and the APIs are stable. This is a great milestone for GTK3. It also means Linux Mint 19.x (which will become our main development platform) will use the same version of GTK as LMDE 3, and distributions which use components we develop, such as Fedora, Arch..etc. This should ease development and increase the quality of these components outside of Linux Mint."

That sounds vaguely sexist to me. I would stay away from using girls names in fear of a lawsuit.
has fake boobs!
For some reason that reminds me of this

Here is my first comment of substance on the subject of Linux, which is certainly applicable to the so-called "newbie distro" produced by Mandrake, but which, I think, has more general application.
They broke my fucking computer.
Perhaps it is because they are French, and perhaps the words have a different connotation in that magical language, but I venture to say that when Mandrake use the word "resize", as in
"Would you like to resize your Windows partition?
(best said with a subtly sardonic Parisian accent)
... they do not perhaps realise that most people are going to assume that they mean "resize" in the sense of "make bigger or smaller by stretching or squashing, perhaps affecting the internal bits somewhat in the process, but basically retaining the structural integrity of the thing". When you use the word "resize" to a normal English speaker, he does not assume that the word means "delete a chunk of, irrevocably, without first checking whether something vital is on it, then render yourself unable to find that deleted block ever again".
This is the basic problem with the much-vaunted "newbie-friendly" Mandrake Installer; five times out of the six I tried it, its two main functions appeared to be to
* Seek out and render inoperable any copies of Windows hanging around and
* Itself fail to install properly.
echo -e 'global _start\n _start:\n mov eax, 2\n int 80h\n jmp _start' > a.asm; nasm a.asm -f elf; ld a.o -o a;
The name of the release is the biggest news?
Because it's named after a woman?
Just like it ... always has been?
Oh Slashdot, what has happened to you?
I've been using Mint for a number of years now and don't have any issues with it; it works right out of the box and provides everything that I want. Good work, devs!
One thing I'm thinking of changing, though, is moving from KDE to Cinnamon (am currently on Mint 17). I've been a KDE user for over 15 years, but it seems that recently the project is losing its momentum. Whether that's because it's matured to the point where major updates are no longer a thing or because devs are moving to other platforms and desktops, I don't know. I'll always remember that KDE4.0 was a disaster, though. Cinnamon, at least for now, appears to be stable, fresh, more streamlined, and in good hands.
note: posting as AC simply because I couldn't be bothered to dig up my login details.
The biggest news is that it will be called 'Tara.'
So, no news then.
and systemd!
I knew a girl called Tara. Had really big boobs.
I know this has nothing to do with the story, but I thought I'd share.
Because they are as mythical as linux on the desktop?
Imagine installing the latest version of Windows, and being greeted with a desktop image of shiny playful letters saying "Windows 11 Janice", or something.
I think people would immediately think of Windows as less serious and competent, and I think this is what keeps many from trying Linux systems - they only appear as odd playthings for computer nerds, not competent serious systems for all users.
Tomorrow is another day!
Did we have this problem with Hurricanes not to long ago?
Does it also play the theme music when it boots up?
And I agree with the others; use a sensible numbering system for releases, not cutsie names.
Picking the 19th name conforming to a series seems to fall below the threshold of newsworthy. (Unless the name is from Star Wars or Bladerunner or the like).
When you have multiple people looking at the same code and making numerous changes, bugs are inevitable in open source code.

I am currently stuck on a pre-Ryzen 6 core AMD circa 2011. While I do i have 16 gigs of ram, that's still a rickety old CPU. I don't have much of a problem with Ubuntu latest, but I seem to have memory of Mint being among the more resource intensive.
How do you think my rig would fair on Mint?
Brought to you by Carl's Junior.
when they start using names like "Chris", "Pat", "Jamie". or "Kelly"!

"Tara" was the name of the plantation in Gone With The Wind. Using that name is racist, isn't it? You'd think so since all the other Southern names are being obliterated from public view and usage.
It's the plantation in Gone With The Wind. Don't be surprised when it burns down.
because the developer has demonstrated some serious anti-semitic behaviour in his call for those who support Israel to not use his product. Jews, meet the broad brush of racism.
Any opinions why one should prefer Mint over Ubuntu or Cinnamon over Mate?
Not that I'd want to start a flamewar or some such, just to add something to talk about here, regarding which I'm not yet convinced I've made up my mind myself.
The author seems obsessed with Linux these days. I think he has done much of his writing of late about Linux desktop releases. For what, the 3% or so of PC users who run a Linux desktop?? I guess Linux users jump from one release to another? I got burned with Ubuntu 17.10 a month ago with the kernel issues affecting bios. I have completely sworn off Linux forever after that fiasco. Mint is probably a good choice if you insist on running a Linux OS on a PC. But don't expect perfection on a new release, anymore then one from Windows or Mac OS.
Is it a Tara that was important in history?
An attention whore?
Heavy on the whore.
Fuck you tara you whore.
I can't even get a Slashdot mention of a Mageia Linux release (downvoted as SPAM), but this info pops up like a Jerry Springer promo?

This submission links to the betanews "article" written by the submitter, which is simply a repeat of the information that is on the Linux Mint blog. Looks like clickbait to me.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
Any progress in that direction?
Today, we get some information about the upcoming version 19 of Mint. The biggest news is that it will be called 'Tara.'
If that's the biggest news, then there can't be much of note to Mint 19.
systemd is Roko's Basilisk.
Giving more dangerous storms male names makes perfect sense to me.
Did you just assume Tara's gender!
MISOGYNIST!
HOMOPHOBIC!
Racist!
Fascist!
NAZI !!!!!!!!11!!1!!
Since Elementary OS dropped the name Isis for Freya (I have no idea why), I vote the next Mint should be called Isis. It's a lovely female name.
