Linux Mint 19 Named 'Tara' (betanews.com)
BrianFagioli writes: Today, we get some information about the upcoming version 19 of Mint. The biggest news is that it will be called 'Tara.' If you aren't aware, Mint's distros are always named after a woman.
Clement Lefebvre, Linux Mint leader, shares the following information: "The development cycle only just started so it's a bit early to give details about Linux Mint 19, but here's what we can say already: Linux Mint 19 is estimated to be released around May/June 2018. Linux Mint 19.x releases will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and supported until 2023. Linux Mint 19.x will use GTK 3.22. GTK 3.22 is a major stable release for GTK3. From there on, the theming engine and the APIs are stable. This is a great milestone for GTK3. It also means Linux Mint 19.x (which will become our main development platform) will use the same version of GTK as LMDE 3, and distributions which use components we develop, such as Fedora, Arch..etc. This should ease development and increase the quality of these components outside of Linux Mint."

The name of the release is the biggest news?
Because it's named after a woman?
Just like it ... always has been?
Oh Slashdot, what has happened to you?
and systemd!

In case you missed it, things have improved in the 16 years since that story was written.
In the interest of fairness, should we compare modern Linux distros to Windows ME?
You do not have a moral or legal right to do absolutely anything you want.
Why are you posting an installer glitch from 16 years ago? It's not even the same distro mentioned in TFA. It certainly wouldn't have the GNOME release mentioned either.
I would call your post pointless FUD if that distro hadn't already been dead for years.

Let's not forget other names, mostly chosen by Microsoft's marketing department:
The whole name, including the version "number", is a brand. Microsoft's marketing folks tend to prefer making connections to other Microsoft products, while Linux folks tend to use names to evoke an emotional connection to their product. Yes, it's all marketing, and it's a standard practice in this and most other fields.

I am currently stuck on a pre-Ryzen 6 core AMD circa 2011. While I do i have 16 gigs of ram, that's still a rickety old CPU. I don't have much of a problem with Ubuntu latest, but I seem to have memory of Mint being among the more resource intensive.
How do you think my rig would fair on Mint?

when they start using names like "Chris", "Pat", "Jamie". or "Kelly"!

So what? Apple just named their new OS after a stoner chic. My cousin Sierra is always high, too.

It's also the name of a female Buddha and a goddess in Hinduism, and a sacred hill in Ireland near Dublin.

Also the name of deities in two major world religions. Also, historical place in Ireland.
Which is Mint using? Do you know?
It was released in 2007. Office did the same thing with the 97, 2013, and 2016 versions, and is expecting to release the 2019 version in late 2018. That alone isn't enough to cause any confusion, but other versions (namely 2000 through 2010) were released in their namesake years.

Any opinions why one should prefer Mint over Ubuntu or Cinnamon over Mate?
Not that I'd want to start a flamewar or some such, just to add something to talk about here, regarding which I'm not yet convinced I've made up my mind myself.
I have no idea which one (if any) the developer had in mind. I do know that the plantation was the first association I made, and within about three seconds, so did Tara's Theme from the movie. Judging from other comments here, quite a few other commentators made the same association, regardless of what was intended.

I fully intend to switch over to Cinnamon over KDE. I miss the Gnome2 feel and Cinnamon really delivers on that front.
But gosh, won't someone think of the BLUR? I miss my glassy terminals man
I'm god, but it's a bit of a drag really...
I can't even get a Slashdot mention of a Mageia Linux release (downvoted as SPAM), but this info pops up like a Jerry Springer promo?

This submission links to the betanews "article" written by the submitter, which is simply a repeat of the information that is on the Linux Mint blog. Looks like clickbait to me.
My beliefs do not require that you agree with them.
Today, we get some information about the upcoming version 19 of Mint. The biggest news is that it will be called 'Tara.'
If that's the biggest news, then there can't be much of note to Mint 19.
systemd is Roko's Basilisk.
Or Visual Studio .Net (VS7)
Problem with your theory is that is not how the changes are then committed upstream.

Tara is a popular name here in Ireland, and the name of someone we really like

I made that switch a couple of years ago, when my laptop was getting a little dated. Then last year I finally got around to getting a newer laptop, and thought I would go back to KDE, so I installed Mint with KDE, but I found within a day that I had come to prefer the Cinnamon desktop. As I still had not migrated much of my data over, a quick reinstall and happiness returned.

To be fair, Mint also gives a number and the names are in alphabetical order. That's two more kinds of logic than the toddlers at Debian.

To me, the name brings to mind Tara of Helium from the john Carter series. However, I can't help but picture her looking like a clone of Thuvia (from the Michael Whelan cover).

I know a gal named Tara.
She's a roller derby skater.
Her full name is Tara Armoff! :^)
Rick B.
The movie was okay. But it really should have been its own standalone property instead of relying on the John Carter name. I read all the books back in jr. high, a hardback collection that a grunkle (would have been grunkle to me) gave my dad when he was around 11 or 12. My youngest sister is "caretaker" of that collection. I'm quite happy to just have a paperback set with all the Whelan covers.
And I have to say, if they ever reprinted them again and got either Larry Elmore or Greg Hildebrandt to to the covers, I would have to get them all again.

I know rather than take the 30 seconds of trivial effort to find out exactly what Linux Mint team meant you want go off on some Twitter SJW level whine fest invoking racism and slavery and injustice....in complete ignorance
You might try reading my comment again and making an effort to understand it. I made no judgment, no complaints. I only mentioned what my first thought was when I saw the name.
