Microsoft Addresses Pressure From Developer Community, Promises To Rename GVFS
DuroSoft writes: Earlier this week an article ran about how Microsoft's multi-year refusal to rename its terabyte-scale Git extension "GVFS" (Git Virtual File System) had drawn the ire and dismay of the GNOME GVfs project (Gnome Virtual File System) which predates the Microsoft project by years. Thanks to Slashdot coverage and community pressure, Microsoft has now officially promised to rename GVFS to something else, and is asking the community for suggestions for a new name. Is this an official sign that MIcrosoft is finally listening to developers (albeit with a Slashdot-level of negative attention), or are they simply trying to appease the crowd while they are still in the news due to their acquisition of GitHub?
Subject line says it all.
That always works out well.. File McFileyFace? Gitty McGit Face?

MSVFS, Microsoft Virtual File System. Remember you heard it here first.
Extended - Cross-platform Terabyte-enabled Filesystem, version 4.
Or Ext4-FS, for short.
Thanks to Slashdot coverage? Seriously? Does slashdot have any impact on this one?
Filey McFileyface
Slashdot doesn't have enough readers to cause a website to get slashdotted. I'm curious as to how Slashdot coverage could influence Microsoft to change anything.
gnome should just go back to calling their vfs what it was originally: gnomevfs.
Sorry, this is Microsoft we're talking about, amiright?
Slashdot - News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters, in ISO-8859-1 Has just realised that beta makes this signature redundant
In British english its pejorative term similar to bastard. Linus obviously didn't do his homework before christening it.
They could adopt the file system and publish any improvements publicly for free use.
But no. This is the same old Microsoft.
FTW?
FTA?
5150?
OICU812?
"I'm an egotistical bastard, so I name all my projects after myself. First Linux, now git."
Just change it to Virtual GIT File System and call it day?
We have decided to call it I can't believe it's not GVFS!
They expect that the angry hordes outside the Redmond walls to be carrying torches and pitchforks. The fact that it seemed to be a mixed bag is normally typical for the area. That they were all sporting aprons threw the riot squad off for an instant, until the crowd control tanks rolled in with their sonic cannons.
WARNING: Smartphones have side effects--most of them undocumented.
Reading all the comments by sam0x17 and others on the threads about this silly non-controversy is just cringeworthy. Cannot believe just how invested these losers are in something that has nothing to do with them. They've simply latched on to pointless "cause" to fight for and feel they have righted some great injustice in getting a corporation to change the name of a virtual file system. Have to say, though, the suggestions those idiots are coming up with are lame as fuck.
Slashdot-level of negative attention? whoo boy, Microsoft didn't have a chance against that nerd onslaught, did it? Jeezus.
.VFS4G but that assumes this will only ever be used for GIT, which is probably a bad way to name something. .GIFTS (GIT/FS) .VITFS (Virtual IT File System) .GIT, .VIT .GIVFS (GIt Virtual File System)

Because it's pretty fun to say git tit.
Thanks to Slashdot coverage and community pressure, Microsoft has now officially promised to rename GVFS to something else,
Really? Isn't this a little...arrogant to take the credit about MS change of mind?
Elok
They called it GVFS specifically to manufacture the outrage so that they could look like the good guys when they changed it after they acquired GIT. This is to distract people from the usual negative predictions when Microsoft purchases anything. Its a "look, we care about you and no we wont totally ruin this product with rent seeking behavior like we have previously, we swear" even though eventually they will do exactly that. Microsoft isn't necessarily evil but they do know the reputation they have and the standard response from most techies when ever they do something, this is them trying to control the narrative by giving the dog a bone and hoping that everyone gets distracted enough to stop the negative publicity of doubting their intentions.
NGVFS is not GVFS
Lots of things have the same name. This is a good name that makes a lot of sense; if developers are confused for more than a minute or two then they have bigger fish to fry. just keep it.
It is a lazy load caching file system so I might suggest LLCFS but that's already local learning [based] clustering feature selection. Short acronyms that are you know catchy have the problem of there are only so many three, four and five letter combinations that it is increasing hard to find one that isn't already in use. The Too Many Name Space Collisions (TMNSC) problem. Why give it a short name anyways? Many systems like composer would call it microsoft-gvfs because of the TMNSC problem today. Similarly the Gnome Desktop Virtual File System should probably be gnome-vfs. It is not that hard a problem really though maybe I'm just biased because I prefer xfce who knows.
M$VFS
.
Definitely the latter.
Microsoft said they should be judged by developers based upon how they acted "in recent years." Well in recent years, Microsoft behaved exactly like the old "embrace, extend, extinguish" Microsoft of olde by (1) naming a product with a conflicting name to sow confusion, and (2) not changing the name when the conflict was noted.
That leads me to believe that Microsoft is throwing a bone to developers, trying to get them to be less concerned about the github takeover.
Microsoft does not spend billions of dollars on an acquisition because they want to be nice to others...
Where's My Data File System
What a truly shitty company MS still remain.
For years they poison the namespace for a piece of free software (I wonder why?) and then only relent when they decide they need the developers & users of said software onside....after pissing away $7.5 billion in an effort to coral them.
Their complete lack of clue knows no bounds. Let me have a guess, I'm not the only one to have dumped Github in the past few days & they're getting a bit nervous?
The funniest thing about it is that before git came along, I read that the code monkeys in Redmond had to make do without a versioning system. Apparently, they used a system which largely consisted of xcopy & symlinks tied together with batch scripts!
I can't imagine how they managed to produce such fine quality software like Windows ME ;)
The Machine stops.
Virtual Git File System
A quick Google search didn't reveal anything in tech with that acronym.

MS says: "LOL we plan on owning GNOME and everything else in the future anyway, so sure we'll rename it because we'll be renaming everything later anyway"
Git File System. Who would object?
GitVFS. Why make it difficult?
The Daddy casts sleep on the Baby. The Baby resists!
I congratulate MSFT on not acting like an asshat in this matter, beyond the whole issue of doing it in the first place. Stop doing this, it gets you a lot more goodwill than rolling it back. How much of a bubble do MSFT Product Owners live in to not use Google before releasing product names?
In all seriousness, if the G stands for Git, why not just call it Git VFS? Are we so strapped for space that an extra 3 characters makes all the difference?
"But people will still get confused!"
How? One is GVfs and the other Git VFS. Are you saying that we cannot have more than 26 single-word virtual file systems?
Thanks to Slashdot coverage and community pressure, Microsoft has now officially promised to rename GVFS to something else,
I am pretty sure ;) the change is not due to pressure, but due to this proposal:

GitBENT
Same reason white people sing it.
I would have FS4DDD File System For Developers, Developers, Developers...
Or perhaps BFS Blamer File System.
If something is so important that you feel the need to post it on the internet... It probably isn't that important.
Gitty McGitFace Please
It is slow, doesn't do correct mounts.
Flushing it would be good.
BTW, I'm a Linux guy, but there are few things I hate more than GVFS.
SameCrapDifferentName FS or SCDN-FS
To keep consistent with Microsofts other product names, they should call it "File server." Like how they have "Sql server" as the name for their sql server, and "office" as the name of their office suite, and "Disk Operating System" is the name of their first disk operating system.
This is no small thing, as small things go. Microsoft loves to name their products after the class of the product itself, e.g. Windows, Word.
(-1: Post disagrees with my already-settled worldview) is not a valid mod option.
Simple and letting them off gently:
MGVFS for Microsoft Git VFS
or
MSGVFS for MicroSoft Git VFS
No, it's a sign that the GNOME brand is toxic. So toxic that even Microsoft doesn't want their products to be associated with it in any way. Even by mistake.
Might suggest: GTFO, for Git Terrabyte File Operations
Basically this makes git into a centralized version control scheme rather than distributed.
There are limitations of a fully distributed scheme (not well suited for large binary files, for example), but the limitations did at least induce a healthy set of sensibilities in developers using git. Keep large binary blobs out of your build tree, keep things so that each device is a full backup of the critical stuff, etc.
This will mainly cause people who use it on their github repository to have a harder time leaving and/or mirroring to other services... oh wait....
XML is like violence. If it doesn't solve the problem, use more.
Official Predatory Monopoly File System (OPMFS)? (This is sure to be accepted, since it's appearing on Slashdot!!)
creimer youtube doesn't have enough viewers to get slashdotted, nor any of his other sites.

GVxFS - Git Virtual Filesystem or... Git Virtual eXtensible Filesystem
There is only one fat bastard here, he has come back after the failure of his youtube channel.

There's no reason to have a name. There's plenty of words in the language to use to describe it. If we name everything, then all the non-name words will become under-used and eventually fade out of the language. Referring to it as "that thing Microsoft made to help with their issue about their stuff" is perfectly clear to me.
A botnet a Terabit-wide :)
ah who cares what gnome developers think. They don't care what their users thought.
GitHub Virtual File System
Will $CURRENT_YEAR be the year of the Linux Desktop?
MS is being nicer here than there is any good reason to be. Slashdots and other webshits will not thank them, any more than they have thanked MS for giving away their solution to this problem for free and developing it in the open, with community engagement.
Some keywords for the NSA in the Lord of the Rings universe: One Ring bind find Sauron quest Nazgul freedom
Yeah, nah. Slashdot level attention is not what it used to be. I mean it's nice to feel like a self important regular member of a large powerful community, but the reality is most companies couldn't give two shits about what goes on here on slashdot, and given the "attention" we give to stupid and mundane things they aren't wrong either.
When will Linux rename the Kernel Virtual Machine so that I don't constantly have to explain to coworkers that KVM isn't Keyboard/Video/Mouse?
Git Files Your Self.
I don't believe in karma, I just call it like I see it.
Did Slashdot just end a story with a retorical question that's an obvious Yes for a change? Usually they go the other way with those...
Speaking of retorical questions, is Slashdot making a bit deal of Microsoft buying GitHub because they happen to own Sourceforge?
Filesystemy McFilesystemface
Microsoft Bob File System.
GNOME is a cancer that is eating the desktop community. Please stay with GVFS. Please just re-appropriate everything GNOME is and turn it into shit.
Reasonable troll I guess (as I'm replying to it), but the song you're thinking of is actually called 'Proud Mary' written by a white guy for the (excellent) band Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Call it What The F*** You Want Filesystem.
my account is flagged on github. Is this the beginning of the end? I haven't even migrated all my private repos yet.
The name should be obvious. MSVFS. Microsoft Shit Virtual File System.

It's not 1999 anymore.
In memory of a developer's files, I propose we name it DiscardFS. This will warn against the act of importing all your data into it then clicking on "Discard all changes".
