Lokisoft call for beta testers for Civ:CTP
The Smack writes "Lokisoft is taking applications for beta testers for Civ: CTP. Show them the support they deserve and flood their mailbox with legitimate applications. Can't wait! " Head over to Lokisoft to sign-up. Looks cool-and their booth is interesting too. Update: 03/03 02:21 by CT :This just in:scjody writes "You may want to update your CIV story. I copied the beta. Here's the form
Excellent...e-mail away!
I got in under the Slashdot effect. Better hurry before they get their mailbox slashdotted.
A bunch of tourists were killed on safari in one of those third-world places by a bunch of guerilla d00dz... INCLUDING an Intel exec and his wife. Put this on as a story, yo!
I saw this a couple of days ago was hoping not too many people would notice, and give me a better chance of getting picked. No hope of that now :-)
I saw the CD was available for Linux a day before it was posted here. And they give one to the *first* 20,000 people.. so :)
I submitted this. It did cross my mind but it's better to show support than play for selfish ends. I'm sure highlander@lokisoft.com will be reading email for a week or so. But we'll also probably get great stories like, "lots of people sign up for beta test, many more ports planned."
I'm sure I'll be picked anyway, so I'm not worried.
Where's the dang screenshots??
Do they want to balance the sample by gender to the world population or the population of Linux users? In the world population, the male to female ratio is near .5 but in the Linux population, the ratio approaches .9 or higher.
From the Loki FAQ, in their Homepage: ...
What Linux distribution will you use as a base?
We would like to support at least the major distributions, but many of the details still need to be worked out. We're exploring the possibility of Alpha/Sparc/PPC support.
...
So, it seems they're heading in the right direction...
I went by the Lokisoft booth at the Linux World Expo and played the game preview. It it a quite well done port up to par with the Windows version at first glance. I also had a chance to chat with the two developers who ported it about their experience. The game is written in C++ and based on their SDL game library for X Windows. It took them about 2 months for the 2 of them to port it.
All in all, it looks like a game well worth buying. They also say they have other game ports in the work though they couldn't devulge the details yet.
Well, I just tried and got:

Whoops!
It's only 10 am here (PST) and the site's busy! Nooo! I have to apply before I run over to next class!!

And yes, I knew what you meant. Just felt like being nit-picky.
Loki were supposed to have a demo at LW? Anybody get a chance to see it? How was it?
the /. effect at lokisoft is an effective wake up call to games industry that there is DEFINATELY a love of games in the linux community.
Talked w/ the programmer's at LinuxWorld, and they also mentioned strong possibilities for LinuxPPC and Alpha ports, and perhaps others. The release CD will likely only support i386, with other architectures eventually available for download (usable only w/ a purchased CD). The release should be ~6 weeks, and it looked pretty good. I've never played Civ, though.
i think their server already crumbled. i tried going to lokisoft's web site and got a 500 error.
/.
:D
goto activisions' civ: ctp site and take a look at screenshots there, linux and windows version have more or less same gfx capabilities
they are switching to gtk now....
btw qt port has been stopped
His wife was also a senior Intel executive.
Perhaps the best thing to do would be to attempt to work out with the original author (Microprose?) a deal whereby you would release a public beta demo of one level or so. Of course, the downside to this is that you might be flooded with bug reports. But the upside is that you'd be flooded with bug reports. The quality or lack thereof of what you label "release" for this conversion will be used to judge your company, so it better be high-quality. A scenario like a public beta gives you at least the chance to know about lots of bugs, and hopefully enough followup with users to squash lots of them.
But I dunno if my box is up to it: old 486/66, 32mb ram, and a clgd - 1mb. I know I shd upgrade, but it works okay, being just a tad wheezy running stuff like KDE. Oh, well.

The majority of the computer world, and the vast majority of the Linux world, is male. They want to get as balanced a sample of the population as possible, so they are probably more likely to select females than males (to even up the ratio). :-)
I don't know any of this, I'm guessing

I'm too busy beta-ing Freeciv 1.8.0. :-)

Hurry up and jump on the individualist bandwagon!

Yeah we want screenshots, yes we do! We want screenshots, how bout you?
God, High School sucked. Anyways it would be nice if the developers were to add some screenshots... No pics suck
I filled out the application last night. They specifically ask what processor you're using, Intel, AMD, PPC, etc. I put down my Alpha.
This kinda suggests this may not be an intel-only realease. Pretty cool.

I'd think more like at least 10 times that amount- 20-25's not enough to really wring things out for something this big.
;->
By the way, best of luck to everyone that applied- hope you all get lucky (and I'm planning on being lucky!

It was SW Uganda, near the Rwandan border, and I hope you are not suggesting that being hacked to death is a desirable fate for anyone.
I have signed up to beta test ... I hope I am one of the lucky 2000 ;-).
I have been a Civ junkie for a long time and I can't wait to play a native Linux version. That is oh so cool.
I would prefer to wait on a longer beta cycle to ultimately have a better quality product... one that will stay on my hard drive for years.
There's no use chasing the chimera of "First Major Linux Game" because if it's rushed and crappy, it will be quickly forgotten as the first major Linux game (not counter err, Quake II and Angband I guess... ;-))
So there's a section there for gender on their app. Does it really matter?? Do women get higher precedence over men, or the other way around? Why the hell do they care?
I wonder how long their mailserver will survive.
Have we ever slashdotted one before ?
Freeciv's still ugly as sin. Some of us like those cool wonder movies. Isometric interfaces fit more on the screen too. Wake me up when it's at least not using Athena widgets.
I've finally had it: until slashdot gets article moderation, I am not coming back.

I just sent my app in, hopefully I'll be betatesting real soon..
As far as the gender question, they just want to know who is really intrested, what parts of the community

~2000 hits in 8 hours, looks like the form is pretty popular. Now if only I had but an ad banner on the page I'd be rich :)

"...Is this world not a call I can screen out" --
I knew that this was going up as of friday... (anybody who expressed interest in beta testing got an e-mail early about it) i was just hoping /. wouldn't post it since the original e-mail that loki sent when i asked about beta testing suggested that they would only be picking 20-25 beta testers spread between x86 and ppc.
in case you care, here's the message that was sent to people who asked them about beta testing really early...
This message is going out to everyone who sent us mail asking about beta testing the Linux version of Civilization: Call to Power. We're going to keep your information and contact you once we've announced the beta test signup sometime in February. Civ should go beta in late February or early March. There will probably be 25 beta testers, and we'll need both Intel and PPC users in that group.
Just a quick note. The show was great. Thanks to everyone who came.
Obviously, our plans for the beta need some rethinking. 20 - 25 just won't cut it. We're somewhere around 2000 responses right now, considerably more than most Windows titles get. We'd have to go into full replication to get that many out.
We're going to do the right thing with the beta -- as soon as we figure out what that is. Ideas?
