I think what djupedal means would be no filtering/blocking in the computer.

I'd fully expect the school to block websites on their wireless internet, but when the student brings their computer home and uses their home internet, they'd have all the options that their parents would.

I posted this before in a very similar topic.

One of the main points of schooling is to get people to find what they're good at. To get them interested in what they COULD be good at. Contrary to popular belief school isn't only about learning hard facts.

I recognize that there are quite a few things that carry with you, though, too, so I see why many slashdotters seem to recommend assembly to "weed" out the poor programmers. I have seen to many fellow students simply turn up their noes at Science and math simply because they've been taught to be scared of it.

Please...recognized that assembly would not encourage people to learn programming as much as you wish it would.

Can I ask, why is that? What about assembly would have made it uninteresting?

You answered your own question then.
Think about it. Why do people get into computer science programming? Because they want to program a game!

When I took Java, the cool thing was making Pacman, or some other nifty visual thing that was easy to do. Then I could say "sweet! I can make stuff that looks cool!" I didn't say, "Sweet! I can control the computer on the Byte level, and control pixels on my screen!"

    I say that now.

Seriously, assembly is great and all, but people are idiots. Assembly would just scare them away.
While I would rather the field be smaller so that there's a higher chance of me being employed, I realize that I would probably not be interested in comp sci if I was thrown assembly the first day.

Have you ever been to Africa?
    Imagine this:
A group of people that want to promote a good organization in the poorest Area of Tanzania. They want a website so they can get support from Americans who are willing to help their cause. Their website will have to be American based because the internet in Africa is terrible, and the fact that they have to connect to it through Cell phones makes it worse.
Instead this organization has a representative (that's traveling anyway) Upload the data in Kenya where internet is more reliable.

    Now Imagine this:
A student wants to learn all he can at an affordable price. Text books are expensive and internet is basically not available (and even more expensive). The cheapest way is to have a friend from the states ship CD's of data that the student can then look over.

    And this:
A Town wants to start an internet cafe, a source of income as well as development for the town. The two options are cellphone usb cards so that the computers hook up to a cellphone provider and use it as their internet (cheap set up, expensive use, price per MB) or Satellite (expensive set up, expensive use, price per Month). Said town is expected to go through a boom with an international airport about to open leading tourists right into the Serengeti. If the internet could be harnessed, this could mean a good economic boom for the town, and the money getting funneled right into the developmental project.

From my experience in Mugumu, I'd love to have this help them out. (and the airport probably won't yet be finished by 2010)

  19. Did you read the article? on First RIAA Case Victim Finally Speaks Out · · Score: 0

I'm not quite sure where you find the facts to make that claim. I gathered that she downloaded music, like most people but that could have been equally backed up by the fact that she "owned" 3000 CD's.

She also was claimed to have bought a new hard drive when she found out she was sued, to which she made the counter point that the hard drive was replaced approximately a month before she found out she was going to be sued. There were problems with the dates (where she gave incorrect information:

The main problem that arose concerning my hard drive was the date I gave my attorney for when the hard drive was replaced. I didn't check the records for Best Buy before I gave my hard drive to Mr. Toder, so when I told him the hard drive had been replaced, the date I gave was January or February of 2004. Obviously, after we received all the information from Best Buy, we saw that the hard drive was replaced in March 2005. We also found out I didn't even own the computer until March 2004, one month after the date I told my attorney.

There was the Argument about IP addresses, where they claimed that she spoofed, but:
    1) anyone is allowed to spoof their IP address without having to worry about the RIAA attacking them. it's a security measure.
    2) The way most service providers work is that you get a new IP address every time you sign in, and have to pay if you want to lock a specific one, for DSL anyway. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I probably am, but that makes it very hard to use IP as an legitimate means for prosecuting.

So maybe I missed something, but it sounds like it should have been a hung Jury.

See my post that was marked (-1 Off topic). In there I had an example of how Conversation between the Iranian President and George Bush was terminated. If knowledgeable, peace seeking Americans engage on a Religious/Spiritual level with Muslims across the world, then we can start waging peace with our enemy instead of war.

"to the point of reasoning with them" makes the erroneous assumption that humans (other than a rare few) are consistently capable of reason. On any subject where "belief" is involved (religion, political and economic theory, child-rearing, ...), reason is literally not possible by the believer. You can no more reason with an Islamic fundamentalist or George W. Bush regarding their respective delusions, than a significantly afflicted schizophrenic off his medication, and probably less.

I didn't really want to bring Religion specifically into this, because that would bring all of the connotations of a ignorant American who believes in God and country, etc.

But I do have the privilege of interacting with a man who goes out of his way to interact with Muslims on a faith level. I've never traveled with him, but I've heard some amazing stories from him how he has explained the Mennonites point of view, being a peace loving denomination, and opening the discussion about religion and war in general. He's done a considerable amount of work against George Bush, to bring people together. Fascinating stories about connecting Mennonites and Muslims in a way that can only lead to more peaceful relations between Muslims and Americans. Examples such as the Iranian President sending a letter addressed to President Bush dealing with George Bush's so called "Christian Faith."

Everyone is "Reasonable" to an extent. I'm sure in some twisted way George Bush thinks he's doing something good. (poor soul)

Don't even start using that as an excuse to stay inside of Iraq. What are we accomplishing? Maybe we should drop nukes on Iraq as well? I'm sure that would overall increase our reputation. That way instead of not only creating more hostility between America and the Middle Eastern Nations, or even simply creating a general anger towards America's ignorance and atrociousness, we would be showing off to the whole world that indeed, America is just as evil an empire as all the Radical Muslims are attempting to fight against.

Maybe then you'll have given the whole war to these Radicals. This war needs to be fought person by person. Through Discussions between people, and by understanding the "enemy" to the point of reasoning with them.

Back to Japan though, I wonder how much of the "peaceful relations" that we have with them aren't so much because we helped rebuild (we had better help rebuild...after blowing a big crater in a densely populated area) but because we are the current world power. I'm sure most countries just "play along" with all the things we do simply so that they don't get lost in the shuffle.
