Don't be daft, PHP 5 is a solid language and it doesn't take much to learn how to write secure code. If you view it from a rookies point of view it could be dangerous, but that doesn't magically make the language crap in the hands of more experienced developers.
I agree. My spelling is pretty good but it will never be perfect because I have Dailysex (ed: Dyslexia). Chronic fatigue stopped my education, in science, back in 1996 but in 2006 I gained the energy to study again and I started to teach myself programming. Since then I have learned PHP, C#, Java and general web stuff like CSS & (X)HTML. I've made a game, blood bowl, from scratch in C# then ported it to Java.
I consider myself to be a good programmer, or at least a programmer with potential to become good. At no point have I felt that my Dyslexia has held me back, in fact I think it has probably helped. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, focusing in on just one aspect is a poor way to judge a person.
Religion doesn't have a monopoly on deciding what is right and wrong. In fact I would argue that you need to view religions classifications of right and wrong through your own moral compass as some judgments from some religions seem repugnant to me (example).
I personally don't understand why religion is needed for moral judgments. If someone needs it as a carrot and stick, e.g. be good go to heaven or be bad and go to hell, then this can be done by society using methods like prison or having people you care about rejecting you. If God is required not for the carrot and stick but for a voice that tells you what is right or wrong then this again can be taken care of by our society, murder is patently bad for society and as such it is wrong.
This is a small piece in the asia-pacific section of the site reporting the results of some research by a team of Australian scientists. That is hardly what I would call a scare story.
Just because one scare story got through does not mean the reputation of the whole BBC is ruined, it just means that sometimes shit happens.
Agreed, it is a cracking book that sets you on the right path. After that you can learn extras from sites like A List Apart, CSS Beauty, css Zen Garden, etc.
I agree that their on demand stuff should be in open formats. The BBC is usually pretty good with stuff like this, I'm not sure why they went down the Real Player and WMP rout.
UFO:Extraterrestrials is a good example of this. It is a fan made (turned into a company along the way) sequel to the original X-COM games. It only came out very recently but already it has been heavily modded. It seems that practically the whole game can be modified extremely easily. It's good fun and also has potential to not only tinker with the original but to create a fan made sequel to the game.
I think ease of modding should definitely be high on any games priorities.
So that poor 5% of the population who have been born with some nasty genetic baggage can not only look forward to a worse life then the rest but also have to pay through the nose too? Not my kinda society thank you.
It's not quite as simple as that. India is getting a higher and higher GDP from the tech industry. If they pump money into that then the state will get more money to put into feeding its poor. If they spend the money on feeding their poor and none on development they will stay a poor country for longer.
Why hasn't Stallman said anything about other non democratic countries that treat people even worse? So you are not allowed to criticize wrongs unless you criticize all wrongs, an incalculable list, at the same time?
I must say that is what I like about Opera. It has a good core set of features e.g. sessions, mouse gestures, integrated search, content blocking, ad blocking, integrated email, spell checking, etc. Since these are core features I know there will be no compatibility problems with them. It also now has Widgets though they can't alter the browser as much as Firefox extensions can.
Before I'm modded as a troll I'm not saying "Opera rulez, FF sucks", there are features that are superior to Firefox too, like the kick ass Web Developer extension. I just think it would do better to have certain key extensions brought into the core browser.
huh? I didn't realize what some random asian thought has anything to do with what americans thought. dumb ass. I see you missed my point, try reading the post again.
As for using what europeans believe as a metric of anything, keep in mind there are euros who are so blinded by their hate for america that they thing Bush was responsible for the asian Tsunamis in 2004. So you think it is right to throw out the opinions of all europeans because of some foolish people? If you think that then I'll just throw out all US opinions due to your stupidity.
Alternativly for Opera you could go to Wikipedia, right click inside the search box then select "create search". Once you have done that if you want to search Wikipedia simply enter "w" then the search terms into the address bar.
So we should either become leaders and effect change or ignore the issue altogether? Charities and lobbying helps get breast cancer sufferers support and gives researchers money to find cures, and how do you stamp out racism without going to the grass roots anyway?
The way to fight DRM (not the only way of course) is not to buy it and convince friends/family not to either.

Personally I like the convention that some authors use where they use "he" if the author is male or "she" if the author is female.
Some folk act like Firefox is competing with Opera, IE, and others... I don't see it that way. Firefox as won, the others just don't yet realize it.
FF hasn't won for me. Personaly I like Opera for, amongst many other things, its browsing, email and irc.

Why not analyse his argument and judge it on it's merits rather then throw it out simply because he is working on an idea of his own?

If they do that then they run the risk of a public backlash, like the reactions to this story.

Why is Mac better for graphics people then Windows?

Dredging up bad practice and pinning it on CSS is just daft.

At what point does this become illegal? Are you allowed to threaten whoever you like to strong arm customers into buying your product?
There should be a way to make MS go to court or lose the right to sue.

I never said it was an easy balance to strike.
