It's not about excusing him, it's about not sending him to a barbaric country where he will be tortured, held indefinitely without a fair trial, and possibly executed. It's bad enough that he'll never have a normal life now. Why not let the poor geezer stay in England and serve his time there? He's already sorry for what he did. He doesn't really know anything. He didn't steal highly classified information.
If we are serious about computer security and viruses, and everything else, this guy must go to trial and probably go to jail.
If we are serious about computer security, then we should get serious about computer security already!
I've been watching this story for some time now. As an American living in Europe, and as a forensic psychiatrist, I really feel sorry for this guy. I know how they treat prisoners at home as I've worked with them, and I know how they treat them over here as I work with them now. If he gets shipped over to the States, he will have his human rights violated. Being a high-profile prisoner, they'll never let him serve any part of his prison term in the UK and his family will never be able to visit him. Basically, he'll never see the light of day again. With all the threats made against Gary, especially what this idiot in New Jersey said, and with all of his supporters, I don't see why he hasn't won his fight against extradition. It must have to do with politics. America has to be putting significant pressure on the British government to make this one go their way. We, unfortunately, would never see these reasons reported in any newspaper thus we can only speculate.
He's never said that he didn't do what he's accused of, and he's always said that he only did it out of curiosity. He didn't even steal anything, let alone national secrets. It's really a shame that he didn't pick a target somewhere within Europe to satisfy his curiosity. They would have been a little more lenient and his subsequent time in prison could actually be bearable. After all, why should he go to prison? He's already very sorry that he did such a thing, he's beginning to fall ill because of the immense stress and feeling of impending doom of getting extradited, and prison is not only about punishment, it's about rehabilitation.
Knowing The Pirate Bay, it IS funny. Have a look around their website, especially at the section on "legal threats". The Swedes understand humour and aren't overly sensitive about what it means.
Regardless, I believe this is great news and I'll be sending Kim Jong-II a pair of platform shoes for xmas this year!
The catch seems to be that this applies to British citizens, not others living in Britain. As an American, in light of the the recent events, I have just decided never to give up my citizenship, no matter how long I decide to live in England.
I think it's a great idea, but their scenario of flying the plane to a secure military base? What makes them think that the terrorists won't just blow up the plane for non-compliance with their demands? What happens to the negotiations? Moreover, terrorists have one purpose and that is to instill terror in people. What makes them think that the terrorists won't just kill everyone on board and blow up the airplane, just for the sake of causing terror? I think the best it does it keep another 9.11 from happening.
Matt Damon and Adrien Brody as Kirk and Spock I can see. But Gary Sinise as Scotty? I think someone mucked up the rumour mill there, Gary Sinise looks more like Dr. McCoy.
I love this kind of speculative "news". It doesn't exactly say anything about AMD and just makes guesses. IBM doesn't seem to even have considered such a buyout and for all we know, Bill Gates could be lurking in the shadows.
The last several Final Fantasy games, as well as Morrowind, entertained me for over 100 hours each. Now Oblivion is out and I feel drawn toward it. It's interesting this topic appeared on Slashdot today as I was just thinking about what a waste of time these games can be. Why do I play and waste so much time when the sense of accomplishment I experience isn't tangible? I have absolutely nothing to show for it, except a memory card or a save file on my hard drive, which could be obliterated at any time by a strong magnetic field. Why do I want to keep playing? Why do these games just get longer and more involved? I'm afraid to try World of Warcraft, I'm afraid to get sucked into it and end up strung out as so many others have. Still, if I had children, would I want them to be out on the street on drugs, or inside on the computer?
I'm a doctor in Norway. I left the States and my sad life of 100+ hour work weeks, Blackberries, and nasty, aggressive, unionized nurses about four years ago. Now I make as much money as I did in the States, work 37.5 hours a week, have 11 weeks off a year, and do not own a pager. When I'm not on a shift, I don't even think about work. I have time for things such as slashdot, writing, and learning another language (German). As an American citizen, I am obliged to pay taxes to the US, not Norway, so I get to keep much more of my money at the end of the year. Life is great! Now if only I preferred blonds over brunettes...
What about games like Oblivion? This one takes somewhere in the area of 200 hours to complete, plus anyone can create their own content and modifications for it, i.e. nude patches, extra blood, etc. I think this bill will fail, just like the others. It's just not that simple.
What kind of club did they visit where people talk in such a way?
Regardless, if you don't want to have your licence swiped, bring your passport or deface your licence's magnetic stripe. Being in close proximity to an MRI machine will do it without visible defects.
I read that the Panasonic's fan exhaust temperature was ONLY 97 degrees, and the surface of the battery measured ONLY 76. This confused me because they failed to mention that the temperature is in degrees Fahrenheit!
I hated my high school for many reasons: lunch food, alcoholic teachers, endless supply of jocks and cheerleader-types, etc. But I went everyday (never missing a day) because I love learning, I had plans for myself and degrees I wanted to obtain, it gave structure to my life, my parents are academic elitists, and there was always that one teacher that made it all worth it.
Thank you. I don't think I'll ever decide to live in the States, but if I do I will keep that in mind.
So what this act says is I can't tell people I don't want to live with them because they're of a colour/religion/gender/race I don't like. I have to keep that to myself but give them some fake reason instead? That just doesn't seem honest. Where I'm living, you can tell someone to piss off regardless of who they are and give any reason you want. My landlord does it all the time to people like gypsies.
I used "people without jobs" for the sake of argument, one of my rules is to avoid living with room-mates at all costs. I'm sure you're nice and easy to get along with, until the bills come.
If I'm posting a room-mate wanted advertisement, I am going to include discriminatory language such as "no druggies, slobs, or people without jobs." I don't care if it's legal to do so or some civil rights lawyers or activists have a problem with that. I'm supposed to waste so much of my time meeting people that, by default, I don't want to have as room-mates? I don't think so.
This is coming from the country that invented and pioneered the use of traffic and speed cameras, and now has thousands of them placed along their roads.
How long before they start building these things in space? Soon we'll all be looking at giant KFC advertisements in the sky. You won't be able to take a photograph of a nice sunset or the aurora borealis without a giant neon sign of "McDonald's" in the background.

Everything is still in negotiations phase, but the plans are real.

75$AU? Microsoft? Sounds like it really is a phising scam, or it's at least phishy!

Are the massages complete with "happy ending" ?

Never thought I'd read Vanity Fair.

This story makes me want to go watch an episode of 'Lost'

Just the execution and implementation of the programme were lacking.
