Ayrshire is far from the middle of nowhere, especially when talking about the coastal parts of it
the problem being with it, especially Ayr, is that there is only (in general) a single exchange per town
a lot of the real country side parts of Ayrshire don't have an exchange of their own and thus get routed to their nearest decent sized town, hence their crappy connection speeds and connection issues
i am originally from Ayr, but , live in Edinburgh now and enjoy the bliss of a Bethere connection at the full 24 megs a sec due to being 438 metres by wire from the exchange
My cousin and mother both live in Belmont in Ayr and get around 7 meg connection , both with talk talk
my aunt, who live a mile up the road in Kincaidston gets about 4.5 meg a sec with AO-hell and my other aunt who stays in Alloway(fringes of Ayr) gets a mere 2 meg a sec.
an old school friend of mine who stays in Maybole gets a crappy 1 meg a sec on a good day.
in the UK this is pretty average for non city connections and to slag it off just shows what an ignoramus you really are skyride
Even if we didn't do it, it's happening. Even if it isn't happening, pollution and landfill are still major problems we have to solve. Oil is still going to run out.
This is a huge opportunity. People developing green forms of power generation, better recycling methods and more efficient devices stand to make a fortune selling them to the rest of the world. It also saves us money on petrol and waste disposal services (i.e. local taxes).
hmmz well have a wee look at this, in general it's about recycling however at 21:45 it specifically goes on about lanfills. you might find it very interesting indeed.
seems from this that recycling, apart from tin, isn't the benefit most people think and is generally worse environmentally than making from scratch
Penn and Teller's Bullshit on recycling
Lanfills also can be used, as seen here to help generate power from the gases in it. it gets tapped and voila.. a groovy source of electricity.
if i have got you wrong on what you meant about lanbdfills then sorry bud, howevere it's worth a watch anyways.
great points however consittantly mispelling the model name of one of the most astinishing cars of all time... well come on guy, yer smerter than that! as the rest of the post shows
no there werent bud. the farthest north the roman era and middle ages vineyards were(and this is debated) iun Lincolnshire or the Newcastle area.
definitely NOT Scotland...
have a look here ib the herald which is talking about past and future vineyards especially this bit
"The Romans had vineyards up as far as Lincolnshire. The temperatures were warmer than today and the Romans were producing wine on an industrial scale. Some vineyards were producing 10 to 15,000 bottles per year, probably vin de pays to keep the legionnaires going on Hadrian's war. Then everything collapsed when the Saxons came in. The Normans brought back viticulture and of course the Christians needed wine for Holy Communion. Then it collapsed again in the "Little Ice Age" of the 17th and 18th centuries when it was restricted to the south-east of England. But now it is advancing north again."
sono.... not Scotland...... as a Scotsman i nearly pissed myself at that tbh
You wrote: "The only fix for Nokia now is to go Android, then the fact they make nice hardware means something again.". Nokia has been well known for making good quality phones, but this is not the reality any more. Hasn't been for past 2-3 years. Flagship product N97 had so many flaws you can not even list them here. Do a google search. N900's hardware has been a nightmare! Just browse talk.maemo.org and you will see why if you are not aware already. Nokia phones used to be good quality phones some 2-3 years ago, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case any more.
i have said it before and i'll say it again
the N900 is a sweet smartphone.. i LOVE mine.
Nokia were VERY up front when they released it saying that maemo was "stage 4 of 5" and that it wasn't a phone that was for everyone. it was very much a niche of a niche phone.
the ovi store to be quite frank ISN'T where you get yer apps.. you get them direct to your phone from repositories. these can be accessed simply by adding them to your phone settings
As far as I'm concerned the only thing Nokia is missing is a better marketing campaign for their product that compares very favorably with the Apple and Android offerings.
I went and looked. Other than some crap Nokia's (glad I finally sold the N86 and E71 on eBay before the market drops out on them) a dead-end SonyEricsson or two (who buys the Vivaz when the Xperia is available with Android?) and some single-country specific iMode phones for Japan, what is there?
Full disclosure: I've worked at Symbian or in Symbian-related startups for years now. Death by committee. Years of my life, gone...
well there maemo at the moment however it's about to change to meego. while maemo is based on debian , meego is based on fedora.
i have an n900 and it's pretty fucking sweet. sonish it's changing from maemo to meego.. sorta..lol it's have the meego front end with the maemo under the bonnet
the newer high end devices will have full on meego
and before you open your mouth and let your AC belly rumble Nokia SAID UP FRONT that the n900 and maemo were a work in prpgress and were VERY open about that.
regardless it's a sweet device that i love to use and will continue to do so
as for symbian it's still going, is used by a massive amount of handsets and will continue to be used.
remember not everyone is as up on things or even give a shit about high end or fashion devices(yeah a dig at iOS fanboi-ism).... some people just want a phone that simply works and symbian certainly does that. from what i gather the new revisions are not bad at all and do some funky shit.
erm.... what about actually ANSWERING what was put to you earlier and you dodged it eh?
what about the CRU leaks that showed , without a shadow of a doubt the sheer scalke of the gaming of the numbers and the sheer scale of the collusion in that? ANSWER IT DON'T DODGE IT!!
um.... silent/gaming mode switches the various scanners off. it's to free up resources (not that is uses much) not to stop you hearing the update message
thus it's still pretty high in cost when compared to what you can do with many packages such as mine where i get 1400 minutes, unlimited(actually limited to 2500) text, unlimited landline calls, and unlimited( 500MB) intarwebs for 35 pounds per month on my N900
this deal was because i upgraded and stayed with then rather than go to o2 like i threatened to do. not that i would have gone with o2 tbh..lol
but yeah it's not a good deal for video calling at all.
if you are on pay as you go then YMMV for calling but bugger that cost for video calling
as fort video calling on the PC then yeah i use it all the time to speak to my kids and friends/family worldwide. it's great
Similarly, people are Scottish or Welsh, and not United Kingdomian.
too right bud, I personally consider myself Scottish and not british..
Cats pee on a gooseberry bush anyone?
they tried to before.... MS has a lot of shares in Apple as i recall
they used to have a LOT more but were made to sell them
also as i recall when apple were in deep financial shit they got a govt bailout to keep up the competition
can't be arsed looking for the links but i am sure you can find with a quick blast in google
oh btw mr Ayrshire AC... change yer MTU to 1458.... i do... windows standard setting is 1500 .. ISP's also the same at 1500
;)
so if you change yours to something like 1458 then it CAN help you

um...... try reading TFA...... and some of the comments.... HP ALREADY WON
aint that the truth
no probs at all bud :-)
beauty is always is the eye of the beholder my friend.
however there can be no doubting it's technical excellence!
it's VEYRON not veryon

check here for the settings
also you will find that maemo on the N900 is soon to undergo a change in that it will be going MeeGo - in a sense.
it's still going to have the debian based maemo under the bonnet and then the Meego UI.
Full on MeeGo is Fedora under the bonnet
how many of the people currently slagging off the N900 have actually had hands on experience with it? not too many i would hazard a guess
... the N900?
As far as I'm concerned the only thing Nokia is missing is a better marketing campaign for their product that compares very favorably with the Apple and Android offerings.
here here sir!
Nokia said from the word go that the N900 was a nich phone and made no pretence about maemo at all... they said i was step 4 out of 5
i have one and i LOVE it... it's fantastic and i cannot wait to see what the MeeGo release for the N900 will be like.
it'll still be the debian based maemo under the bonnet but will have the Meego front end on it.
the device plain rocks to be frank
I went and looked. Other than some crap Nokia's (glad I finally sold the N86 and E71 on eBay before the market drops out on them) a dead-end SonyEricsson or two (who buys the Vivaz when the Xperia is available with Android?) and some single-country specific iMode phones for Japan, what is there?

also what do YOU mr cyberax have to say to the fact that global warming thery is at odds with the laws of thermodynamics???
full report here in pdf
so cyberax answer those two points....... save me the preachy bollocks and just answer PROPERLY that which is put to you
Stupid call centers..... what the hell are those people saying.
call centres are generally reached through VOIP
you might be calling a landline number in the country of the origin but it's routed through a VOIP gateway to India
this saves assloads more money to the companies who have outsourced their call centeres there
classic one sir!!!!! genuine belly laghs from that line!!!!
Pedant.
this is slashdot... of course i am a pedant
:P
you must be new here
Finally ... a CPU that can cool itself. No noisy heatsink required!
heatsinks are NOT noisy....... not one bit
fans can be tho
f*ck the energiser bunny!
:P
MR POTATO HEAD FOR THE WIN!
erm... ok i'll get mah coat... or should that be jacket
um.... silent/gaming mode switches the various scanners off. it's to free up resources (not that is uses much) not to stop you hearing the update message
going into setting is how you disable sound.
on vodafone(i just called them :P )
,unlimited(actually limited to 2500) text, unlimited landline calls, and unlimited( 500MB) intarwebs for 35 pounds per month on my N900
calling vodafone - 25p per minute
calling other networks- 55p per minute
thus it's still pretty high in cost when compared to what you can do with many packages such as mine where i get 1400 minutes

Think "Christopher WALKEN" "Pulp Fiction" and "Watch".
