Actually the difference is that a parachute would instantly shred at the supersonic speeds they are talking about. It needs a clever shape and tougher materials. They will probably need to make it out of unobtainium.
Every three or four years, the martian dust devils swarm together to mate, colouring the air a beautiful rusty red for the duration of the breeding season.
Show me your age and I'll show you mine.
My first computer had 128k of memory, ran off floppies, and had a word processor which was good enough to do all of my university reports.
My current linux laptop is maxed out at 2G, and gets sluggish if I need to run more than one virtual XP machine.
Does it run out of memory, or does it need yet another core?
I guess in a few years time when I need to simulate vista too, then I'll need a new machine.
Yes, of course I'll pay the full whack for super duper ultimate windows fester, so that I am entitled to run it as a VM, really, honest..
"a bit like faulting a door without a lock for opening when the handle is twisted". They are asking, nay forcing me to buy yet another new stable which has the same open door. I would be wrong to fault them for this?
One of these theories tries to explain why the world works the way it does. The other one basically tells you not to wonder why it works beyond "god made it so". Only one of these theories counts as any kind of science.
It always amazes how these people underestimate the scale and beauty of "god"'s creation by so many orders of magnitude. Apparently their god would not have been subtle enough to make life which could adapt to a changing world? There is nothing in any science which confirms or denies god's existence. Imagine if they had won over the astronomers, we would have been stuck with a tiny god who could only manage one little planet, and one star. Now we know about the vast beauty of the stars and galaxies spread across the sky. Surely if you are going to believe in a creator, this sort of knowledge can only increase your respect for it?
There I go again, trying to apply reason to religion. But why doesn't it ever work?
I see people saying that this is a good thing, that there should be competition in providing such a device to the poor kids of the world. I think people should take a step back and look at the wider picture. Here we have a guy that truly believes in getting them a laptop. He sets up a charity to build them at COST. After years of effort, the project finally looks likely to succeed. And then... in steps the incumbent monopoly holder with a cheaper device.
Do AMD make a profit selling him his chips? I don't know, but I'd like to think that nobody in the chain is making big money on the OLPC. The article is pretty skimpy on details.
How do the machines compare on the price/performance curve?
Does it run bloody windows? Is the other evil empire in on it too? I seem to remember they put in a spoiler announcement recently that they would develop a version of windows to run on the OLPC.
If I were Mr.Negroponte I would be fucking livid right now.
My boys will make me video each episode and watch them endlessly. Hooray for geek kids. Unfortunately we are off on holiday that week, so I'm hoping somebody will post a torrent when it airs, if not sooner.
My dad tried that one, he came to Britain from Hungary in 1956, before that, the family came from Germany. Hungary is "liberated" now. I envy them. I imagine that freedom is a more current concept in their culture now than mine. So, where to next? I'll skip the Land of the Free thanks, is there somewhere else with a slogan less hollow? Maybe the time will come, when I tell my sons it's time to go, as did my grandfather and his grandfather before him.
Alternatively, the people in those countries are lucky enough to have a government they trust not to abuse this data.
Personally, I'm paranoid and don't like the idea of ID cards or 24/7 surveillance in anybodies hands.
The fuss over ID cards is based on the fact that many people do not trust the current government not to abuse it.
I would oppose it on the grounds that there is absolutely no way that you can possibly trust the next government with it, you do not know who they will be.
I pray that the Netherlands, Germany and Austria never fall under a regime where this might be a problem. Luckily it has never happened before. Oh... actually... nevermind... (praying even harder)
So, there I am reading through the posts trying to get a feel for how others think, and I come across yours.
It's marked as insightful, so maybe I should read it.
Now, as an aside, when I set up my browser, I get it to display standard text at about the right size for me to read, clever huh?
Why are your words so much smaller than everybody else's?
No, I can't be bothered to squint or change my settings just so I can hear what you have to say.
Please don't mess with the tags unless it actually helps to get your message across!/rant>;D

'His Grandpa was an important politician and now it's "his turn".' Completely different to the US then, where you inherit the job from your father.

To the honourable person who made this "mistake".
No, to run Fester you need the slightly larger USB ball and chain form factor.
To distinguish it from the GM version, this will be designated the Google EV-1L

Just another few billion steps to go then?

No need to worry, the kleenex will safely absorb your dubious DNA. In the interests of public safety, always incinerate just in case.

Nobody jumped the shark then?
Er... I got better

Now when I am out speeding on my motorbike I give the finger every mile, just in case there is a camera watching.
No, this one is going to feature a new young hero, who suddenly discovers he is not just a farm boy after all. Introducing ... Lame Sharkjumper

Ring, ring. Hi, I'm from HP, er... I mean the FBI and I'd like you to look up some phone records for me.

So, how do you expect it to survive re-entry then?
Let's SHIP it then!
