Actually the difference is that a parachute would instantly shred at the supersonic speeds they are talking about. It needs a clever shape and tougher materials. They will probably need to make it out of unobtainium.

Show me your age and I'll show you mine. My first computer had 128k of memory, ran off floppies, and had a word processor which was good enough to do all of my university reports. My current linux laptop is maxed out at 2G, and gets sluggish if I need to run more than one virtual XP machine. Does it run out of memory, or does it need yet another core? I guess in a few years time when I need to simulate vista too, then I'll need a new machine. Yes, of course I'll pay the full whack for super duper ultimate windows fester, so that I am entitled to run it as a VM, really, honest..

It always amazes how these people underestimate the scale and beauty of "god"'s creation by so many orders of magnitude. Apparently their god would not have been subtle enough to make life which could adapt to a changing world? There is nothing in any science which confirms or denies god's existence. Imagine if they had won over the astronomers, we would have been stuck with a tiny god who could only manage one little planet, and one star. Now we know about the vast beauty of the stars and galaxies spread across the sky. Surely if you are going to believe in a creator, this sort of knowledge can only increase your respect for it? There I go again, trying to apply reason to religion. But why doesn't it ever work?

I see people saying that this is a good thing, that there should be competition in providing such a device to the poor kids of the world. I think people should take a step back and look at the wider picture. Here we have a guy that truly believes in getting them a laptop. He sets up a charity to build them at COST. After years of effort, the project finally looks likely to succeed. And then... in steps the incumbent monopoly holder with a cheaper device.

Do AMD make a profit selling him his chips? I don't know, but I'd like to think that nobody in the chain is making big money on the OLPC. The article is pretty skimpy on details.

Personally, I'm paranoid and don't like the idea of ID cards or 24/7 surveillance in anybodies hands. The fuss over ID cards is based on the fact that many people do not trust the current government not to abuse it. I would oppose it on the grounds that there is absolutely no way that you can possibly trust the next government with it, you do not know who they will be. I pray that the Netherlands, Germany and Austria never fall under a regime where this might be a problem. Luckily it has never happened before. Oh... actually... nevermind... (praying even harder)
