Last I checked, walled gardens were not legally forced by any major government (as far as I know), so you'll never be forced to use one.
You do realize that "so you'll never be forced to use one" does not follow from "walled gardens [are] not legally forced by any major government [right now]", right? Because in the future, things might change.
And this will never ever change. The government will never be able to monitor us all all the time. Therefore, we do not need to figure out a way to hinder them from monitoring us all the time.
Which is the problem with Greens and this issue. Greens certainly think that free speech is neat, but there is always the possibility that they will deal away the issue for something that's more important to them, like, say, a ban on nuclear power or an EU tax on carbon or somesuch. The Pirate Party won't.
I have no idea where anything I don't use daily is. But with menus I can click on each and scan them in a few seconds (because they are words) and find likely candidates quickly. With the ribbon, I must hover over every single icon until the tooltip comes up to find out what it does. That is much, much slower.
So now might be a good time to make REASONED arguments against it to your Congresscritter and Senators.
I have never understood the people who push this argument. Do they _really_ think our leaders, in general, are so absolutely retardedly stupid and ignorant that they (the leaders) don't know already what the consequences of all things like this will be?
Personally I find it interesting (disheartening actually) when something as innocuous as taking a picture of a train can seem so frightening to some people as to be enough reason to curtail civil liberties in order to prevent it from happening.
The irony is that if I was a terrorist, neither Amtrak regulations nor their police stopping tourists from taking pictures would stop me from taking evilpictures of their trains.
(I would use small cameraphone held discreetly in the hand, or apparently used as a phone and just turned in the right direction when the train comes in. Or a camera disguised as a ring or a medallion. Or a camera hidden in a bag, or my headgear. Or something else, but the point is that the Amtrak police would never see me with a camera or taking pictures.)
I mean that you use the word "democracy" (or rather "true democracy") to mean "good".
And I think you should use "freedom" instead. At least for me, it doesn't matter at all if the regulations and taxes if suffer under are imposed upon me by a fascist dictator or by 51% or more of the population. What matters if whether if find myself (and others) to be sufficiently free or not.
Are Scalzi's books deeper than pure entertainment?
Absolutely not. This is very much young adult literature. Simple story and worldbuilding, little or no character development, the protagonist is Superman and the focus is on the action.
You do realize that it's only because we have the EU that France at all could try and impose such a law on us non-French? (And on the French, but France could have done that anyway.)

I want a basic income. Should I just email you my account number so you can start making deposits, or how do you want to go about it?
This is nearly gibberish. You should learn the differences between "there", "their" and "where". You can't just pick which you use at random.
On top of that, if you have ANY health condition whatsoever, good luck finding insurance to cover it
You know, if it has already happened, then you are not looking for insurance. You are looking for subsidies.

Well, you're gonna have to change that anyway, you know. Otherwise Ahnold won't be able to become president.
Agreed. Slashdot should headhunt this guy.
He's saying he's a USiAn.
UN Declaration of Human Rights
"It's just a goddamned piece of paper."
Then you're doing it wrong. You should always fire double-handed.
Good one, narc. ;-)
I can't see were any jobs would be created?
English teachers. Badly needed.

Mmm, "true democracy"...

Oh, shush. Nothing wrong with that one. Not hilarious, but a respectable attempt.

What, really? Source!
Dude! Enemies that take cover. Groundbreaking.
FPS AI generally isn't too hot. That they have cleverer AI here than is the norm is news.
Servers - WW2 Operations. ... Mincemeat,
If the military operation I was about to embark on was called "Mincemeat", I would call in sick that day...
