I believe that Jabber is the alternative. It is much like email in how messages are routed and it is not only presence and chat, you can also send messages much like email, the fact that the big majority of Jabber clients don't offer that feature is just a problem with those clients; not the protocol.
This idea grew in my mind when I saw an outlook-like jabber client.
When code I use whatever I want and my employee only cares that the resulting code works (if he cares about my tools I quit; I've already did it when they tried to force me to use some tools). Why don't you do it yourself ? Teach the code, test the code, don't mind how they did it ? I would give a short intro and if they don't know any editor at all I would show how to use a simple editor (not vi neither emacs, something graphical and easy to use like kwrite or gedit or for the console, nano or j-something); but tell them that they are free to use whatever they want. Some may feel motivated to search for better alternatives and that search will be educational in itself. They are likely to tell each other about different alternatives and argue whether emacs is better than vim... that will be educational in itself; it happens in the real world; let it happen in the classroom.
I would be delighted to be stuck with older stuff if that stuff was Lisp. I think that stuck with older stuff, it is stuck with the fashioned stuff, which like the lattest fashion clothes (for women), they are very uncomfortable.
I love programming and I struggle daily to do it in a market that sucks.
We shouldn't talk about grave when a new technology is replacing an old one. Why not saying that 35mm is close to end a wonderful service and retire to spend the rest of its life drinking daikiri on Bahamas ?
What about a watch-like device that contains a memory and a microphone to record sound (mainly ideas) that can be connected to the computer (via USB) to fetch the audio ?

The good thing is that free software never really dies. It may be frozen but it is still there for everyone and if someone wants to pick it, (s)he is free to do so.
An excellent point to talk about is that program centric environments, like Windows, KDE, Gnome and most of what we see today are really bad for users. Document Centric environments are much, much better! Then, you don't have to think about names of programs because there are no programs. Read about Apple's Lisa to know more.
I was giving a talk/conference at local LUG, when it was a LUG, and someone asked (regarding what I was showing) "Does that work on Linux ?", "Yes, of course, or OpenBSD or NetBSD for that matter" I replied. They almost killed me. Today, the LUG is no longer a LUG but a FSUG. Change happens, there are still a lot of Debian fans there, but there are also OpenBSD fans, Gnome fans, KDE fans, etc. Fanaticism sucks. If there's not a local FSUG, you can create it, you may as well end up merging with the LUG once they realize that freedom tends to be much important that Linux (Linux is what it is because its free, not the other way).
LUGs may not matter, but, I see most of LUGs turning into something that matters much more:
Free Software User Groups
or FSUGs.
Those groups can promote free software on proprietary platforms (such as firefox and open office on windows), generally as a transitory stage to reach a free platform. Various free platforms are embraced: GNU/Linux, *BSD and why not GNU (that is, with HURD).
Here, the local LUG is very important and they make huge events each year bringing thousands of people to learn about free software, there's no marketing of any company that can replace that.
When will people understand that the only way to have privacy is by technology, not by law. Because as long as it is technologically possible to listen/read what you say/write, someone [1] will do it. Make it impossible: SSL, GPG.
[1] Be it the NSA or the local mailserver administrator or the router administrator.

Maybe it is time to pick a language that accurately transmit human emotions, or at least, better than English (and Spanish): lojban.
