  1. Vista Symlinks not accessible via in XP and 2000 on Vista's Limited Symlinks · · Score: 3, Insightful

People are asking questions about VISTA Symlinking on MSDN. See this thread. The Vista symlink seems to have not much more functionality than "shortcuts" did in Windows 95 or Windows 98.

The issue at hand is why was the API left so incomplete that remote accessing a share that utilizes Vista Symlinking does not work? This is a large oversight on Microsofts part, and basically makes Symlinking useless. Fortunately, Symlinking works great via Samba. Another reason to stick with Linux..

Back when I was in University, I did my master's thesis on Embodied Intelligence. I developed a virtual world that adhered to the laws of physics using the ODE physics engine, and within this artificial physical environment I evolved embodied agents. It's quite interesting to watch the videos and see the fluid, almost life-like motions of the evolved behaviors.

I never got around to actually downloading the evolved neural networks into robots, although all my source code is GPL'ed and posted at the above site. So if somebody wanted to evolve their own creatures and download the evolved intelligence into an actual physical robot, it would be interesting to see the results

When a review or article begins with a statement that is so absurdly incorrect, it makes me wonder how factual or researched the rest of the review can be. One can only hope that the Author meant to say that 90% of discussions over copyright are related to the web or occur on the web. Otherwise, I would take the rest of his review with a grain of salt.

Munich is the Capitol of Bavaria, Germany. Bavaria is the high tech capitol of Germany and the richest state in Germany. They have always been ahead of the curve. It is no wonder that they are migrating to Linux and adopting open source software where it makes sense. With Munich being home of some of the largest high tech companies in the world, it would make sense for the government of Munich to adopt similar policies. I for one, praise Munich and it's government for thinking out of the box. The licensing fees they will save on Windows can certainly be spent better elsewhere.

  6. May be older than 30 years old on 30 Years of Public Key Cryptography · · Score: 4, Interesting
Historians of science will certainly spend time sorting out the various claims. David Kahn, the author of the best selling history The Codebreakers, said that he recently asked the National Security Agency to declassify some documents so he could write the proper history of public key cryptography. He said an NSA staff member told him, "I've spoken to the guys who did this, but they don't want to be interviewed now." This suggests that the NSA also may have discovered public-key systems or had a hand in exploring them. Kahn hopes that the NSA will follow in Britain's lead so an accurate history can be written.

It is likely that the NSA discovered public key Cryptography in the late 60's or early 70's. Public Key Cryptography may be as old as 40 years old at this point, but without clarification from the NSA, we will never be certain.

  8. The ultimate browsing experience on Firefox 2 Launch - Interview With Chris Beard · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think firefox needs a tagline. Maybe Mozilla foundation can contact BMW and include a free firefox CD with every BMW sold. (ie. the Ultimate Driving Experience along with the Ultimate Browsing experience). Things like this will help firefox's penetration. People really need a reason to use firefox over IE, and right now I can think of two good reasons:

    1) Firefox doesn't have the huge ActiveX security hole that IE has.
    2) Firefox offers tabbed browsing (now that IE7 is out, this is no longer a Firefox advantage).

So the list of major advantages firefox has over IE is dwindling. I think integrating some form of anonymous browsing, either through a network such as Tor, or through an anonymous proxy service would give Firefox yet another advantage over IE... Maybe Firefox 3?

I have tried Mandrake many times over the past few years, and even joined their "Mandrake Club" a few years back when they were on the brink of Bankruptcy to help them out; however, I have always felt that their Distro was never QA'ed as well as SUSE or Redhat for that matter. When you fire up the latest SUSE, you tell you have a professionally QA'ed product, as everything works out of the box. With Mandriva on the other hand, everything looks great on paper. They always have some of the latest packages, and include alot of the new technology; however, there are always a few things that dont work well with my system after I install it. In fact, on more than one occasion, I've even had trouble installing a new release of Mandriva.

Now I have nothing against Mandriva, and I like urmpi, but I think I may pass on this release, or try it out on a Virtual machine first before getting rid of my SUSE and Fedora boxes.... Now there's a thought..

The DOJ and PTO have given their solid support to Microsoft's petition for certiorari in its battle over transnational patent infringement. This support makes grant of the petition highly likely.
    ...

That statute allows a U.S. patentee to collect damages for foreign sales of a patented invention based on the export of one or more of its components from the U.S. Recently, the CAFC has expanded the common interpretation of the statute to include the export of software code (AT&T, Eolas) as well as to the export of elements used in a patented method (Union Carbide).

Microsoft and other large corporatations have everything to gain from this should the Supreme Court decide in favor of this. They have amassed huge patent portfolios, and would be able to effectively halt the development and distribution of a majority of OSS software out there with foreign contributors. I hope I am not the only one that finds this very disturbing.

According to my interpretation of the article, and the graphic provided, software developed totally in a foreign country (say Germany), would still create liability if it were to infringe upon a US patent!

This is similar to the SSH exploit reported here on Slashdot a few weeks back where data could be determined via statistical/timing analysis done on the packets sent during an SSH session.

It sounds like if these types of timing and statistical analysis attacks become common, a simple solution would be a firefox extension that would randomize the timing of the input from the mouse and the keyboard. I suspect that randomly delaying a keystroke or a mouse click anywhere between (0-100ms) would be enough to defeat this type of analysis as well as short enough as to not adversely affect the browsing experience.

Of course browsing browsing the web through a good anonymous web proxy will probably do alot more to hide your identity than any type of randomizing of your input strokes.. but then, utilizing both methods as well as encryption would make things all the harder for any attacker.

One can only hope that this case will prevent "Legal Extorion" from occuring in the future; but alas, that is just wishful thinking... IBM is a big rich company. If SCO were to come after a small fish like you or I, would we have the money to defend ourselves the way IBM did? I seriously doubt it. More than likely, had SCO sued me directly, I would have run out of financial resources trying to defend myself, and would have capitulated. SCO probably would have gotten summary judgement against me and precedents in case law would have been set. The sad thing is, had SCO has smarter lawyers, they wouldn't have tried to take on a big fish like IBM, but would have sued a very small company with few finanical resources to defend themselves. Once a precedent has been set, they could have laughed all the way to the bank. Believe it or not, the legal system is full of cases which many would consider "Legal Extortion" (ie. Pay up now, or face an expensive and lenghty lawsuit). One industry I can think of where many hungry lawyers prey upon is the California Real Estate market. Which brings me back to a headline I once saw on a magazine for lawyers in California. The headline read: "Mold is GOLD!", meaning that the common practice of bringing in an environmentalist to find 'mold' in a home and then turning around and suing the former homeowner for not disclosing the potentially hazardous condition that is causing the new occupants all sorts of numerous ailments, is worth big bucks to many california lawyers.

Here's hoping that this case will help the little guy... but I'm not gonna hold by breath!
