While I've never an official network admin for anything larger than a 10 person office
Quite often at larger companies, they keep their licenses locked down and often do audits of their machines and what is on the network to avoid breaking and EULA terms.
Quite often I've been stuck in a situation where I've needed a server for a J2EE app server, handle bug tracking, mail and/or file serving.
Whats a developer/mgr to do?
So I bypass the corporate infrastructure and install Linux on a whitebox or other system deemed 'to wimpy' for use anymore--and voila, my problem is solved.
It also allows me to put together systems utilizing open/free source solutions to demonstrate to upper level execs (or clients) the benefits or a system without me needing a budget to work from.
Astronauts used to be pilots, and daredevils. Then they slowly phased into glorified cable men. Now they're construction workers.
I'm glad I didn't want to be an astronaust when I was a kid, I'd have to change my background profession every 10 years to keep up with NASA's purpose.:D
Actually, Milton and the epic of the stapler didn't originate in 'Office Space' but rather Judge's cartoon short from MTV's Liquid Television progam.
The skit basically showed Lumbherg and Milton having their classic confrontation about the stapler, moving his office down to the basement, and what not.
If you can get a company to agree to that, you must have some special skill. Non compete's put you on the defense from day one at a new company and chances are the company doesn't care. Fortunately, they are extremely hard to enforce (which is what every HR person says), but at the same time, if they are so hard to enforce, why bother with them.
I wrangled with my current employer for 6 months refusing to sign unless they gave me a contract or a severance package because their non-compete was so vague it included the entire industry.
In the end, I had them reword the document to specifically list their 'direct' competitors, which could not change without my approval, and remove any mention of working with corporate partners.
Now why doesn't RIO get its act together to support more memory. I bought a 128 flashchip and my Rio500 would even recognize it. With a microdrive instead, it would make a mighty powerful mp3 player.
In Boston we have such a shortage that I don't even look for jobs anymore, they look for me. I typically get 3-4 contacts a day either by phone or email offering me work. And if I'm interested, I tell them my salary REQUIREMENTS, what I'm interested in doing, and 9 outa 10 times they say ok, meet with me for 45 minutes and hire me on the spot. I'm on job number 7 in 2.5 years, never been a contractor, and usually increase my salary by 20k each jump I make. I like this economy.
Last summer Slashdot did an article on A-Top cases and I ordered one from them. It cost me over 200 just for shipping since they were importing them from Hong Kong. Aside from that, I had to pay an additional 50 bucks for the case(cheap), but you get what you pay for.
When the case arrived, it was already broken and I had to have them send out another one.

Thanx for the extra info. I just priced one out with dell, (500mhz, 15" SXGA+ 8meg video, 256MB on a single dimm, 25GB expandable to 75GB disk, and a DVD-floppy combo). Priced at $4890. This thing sounds like what I need--a desktop workstation in a little box that weighs in at 9lbs. I'll check into the Richochet, but I'm on the east coast and I didn't see much other than NYC. As for you landline dialing--why pay anything? These ISPs are now giving away free service.;-) PDG FYI--TO ANY MEDIATOR READING THIS--GIVE UNCLE ROGER A MILLION POINTS IN HIS SCORE. TALK ABOUT RESOURCEFULLNESS!!

Thanx for the info. I was actually looking at the Dell Inspirion since its upgradable to 512 MB ram and 75 GIGs of disk space. 15.4" monitor, DVD, lots of speed, and I like their touchpad's feel. I do a lot of coding in NT and want processor speed to handle the MS bloat, but I also want the ability to boot a Linux partition. I really like your wireless modem, which sounds great, although not offered in my area and seems to only run under Win95/98 (which I will not stoop to running). Know of any other providers or hardware?

I've been following all these threads as I'm about to make a hefty purchase on a super-powered laptop. Main concerns have been mhz, ram, hd capacity, and upgradability. I figured, get the fastest, strong, best now, and it'll take a little longer for it to be obsolete. But what about OS issues? Anyone run VMware on a laptop with Linux AND NT? (or any other combos) I like the idea of wireless LANs and wireless modems but it seems they are only available for Win95/98. Is this just FUD, or are there products out there for us mobile geeks with high power needs?
Just get the starter kit and buy all the other modules from Radio Shack. They are identical. In fact, I didn't realize someone in the house already had them and I was inadvertantly turning their stuff on and off.

But Worthless. Can someone tell me if there is any functionality to such a form factor?
Great!

I watched the event live on TV and they had a camera showing it from the rockets view.
You could watch each stage fire off. Pretty neat.
Real question I ask, is why are they back to using the Deltas? Didn't the older ones blow up enough or are the Shuttles THAT booked up?
sorry, i can't think of any Simpson's related comment to make.
This would nice with a interface to Tivo/ReplayTV so you could simply sync up the two together.
Has anyone found where to download Camera/Shy? I'm really interested in trying this software out but can't find it anywhere.
Help?

Judge made 'Office Space' from this skit.
Remember when Batman (played by Keaton) recorded the Penguin (Devito) onto a CD and then replayed it?
It always bugged me how Batman then 'scratched' the CD as if it were a record (which obviously is not possible)
Makes me wonder if this project was based on the same 'annoyance' and wanted to make something that would work.
I think EWJ was one of the most 'unique' and creative games made in years.
I mean c'mon--a superhero worm, an level in 'heck' with elevator music, a puppy dog that turns into a monster.
It was just so perverse that it immediately became fantastic
(and I still have vivid memories of literally holding my breath while doing the underwater bubble scenes)
The new Harley Davidson V-Rod, not only is the first to feature a water cooled engine, but its
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT METRIC!!!
This shows that some die-hard American companies are jumping on the bandwagon.

found a link that works over at themovie.net or something like that. Someone posted it in one of the below(or above) sub threads.

Really funny and ironic. The job that I just landed is headquartered in Phoenix and I'm here in AZ for the week. :-)

Gee, my house burnt down last nite. Ever seen the sight of 12 melted servers? Its a sad sight. I feel like a certain Slashdot member.
I made one of those for the original B.O. It worked great.
