I caught a friend of mine Jonesing for football so bad one day he sat down and watched the game play itself... at least that's what I thought. I caught him again, and he finally admitted he liked watching the defensive plays and picked up only when it was his turn to be on offense.

These conceptual patents give me the creeps - there's no huge innovation here at all.

Uh, this will likely lead to as comprehensive public transportation as you can get. There have been a number of writeups about this, not the least of which was mentioned on /. in this article.

This routing information being handed to drivers who manually take action is the first step into complete and total automation. With automation, transportation costs will plummet and it's not entirely impossible to envision adequate transportation being listed as a "human right" along side adequate shelter and food (meaning not everyone will have it, but society will go to great lengths to provide it). This is a fantastic development, and I'm very hopeful about the future of automated driving - this takes us one step closer. And anyone who is skeptical should read the writeup Brad Templeton has done on his website, this is not just a sci-fi thing. This will bring real societal progress and is entirely obtainable.

How about a hands free GPS you could speak to (even in a very limited way)? I think there's a large market for that too.

I don't know if human level intelligence is necessary to have a natural language search engine, for example. But even if getting to natural language is a ways off, and it involves high level AI functioning - Kurzweil was still far off on most of his predictions, and things seem to generally lag behind his timeline, already.

    But, that's just my opinion.

I consider advanced AGI to be the ultimate end-game of humanity, and I would love to see this happen in my lifetime. I also subscribe to Kurzweil's theories (though I'm growing more skeptical after this 2009 article).

But looking at the article and evidence, and objectively evaluating the facts... they miss the mark. Of course, the guy is predicting the future here , but even correcting for that, he's off. Worse still, not only do they miss the mark, they miss the mark in the core area of AI development, which is the cornerstone of his whole theory. Many predictions were centered around a growing ability on the part of AI to understand, process, and interpret the meaning of speech. We're still not there - not imminently close to a solution either.

I really, really hope I'm wrong about my analysis, but just looking at what is, and what he thought would be - it doesn't bode well for a 2040's singularity.

Oprah is very rational in her business decisions, I've studied them a bit. Many times, in these cases, it doesn't make economic sense to hire defense lawyers - cheaper to settle... so I wouldn't count a settlement out. However, if this gains enough publicity (and I think it may have), she'll be forced to fight it, so as not to invite other frivolous lawsuits from those looking for a quick buck.

Mark Everett Hall really looks at things from a biased IT perspective. Yes, in his analysis, this will hurt US as IT professionals, but we do not constitute the entire economy. In fact, when businesses get leaner the economy gets better on a macro scale. Yeah, we could be hurting, but that doesn't mean the economy will be.

And that, of course, is assuming you buy the thesis that people will move into this and fire their IT staff all in 2009 - here's a clue: they won't.

And IF they did, what do you think us highly skilled laborers would be working on? My guess is cloud computing - those things don't code, administer or test themselves. Truly, looking on the bright side, one can visualize all IT effort being concerted into one specific area, hastening the arrival of new innovations - but I'm of the opinion that that analysis goes too far the other way.

My bet, the pendulum will continue on its slow course back to dumber clients and smarter servers, but it's not going to change anything in major way overnight, or over 2009.
