There's a few batshit crazy evangelical Christian politicians hiding in the Conservative Party, just that Harper did a very good job of keeping them silent. During the election the local Conservative candidates were not allowed to talk to the voters, just Harper's message of low taxes and a government that will keep you safe no matter how much it had to violate your privacy.
The American colonies had some democracy before the revolution with most (all?) of the colonies having elected legislatures and appointed executives (Governors etc) who could override the legislature but often listened and took the peoples will into account. One of the motivations for the Revolution was that the peoples rights as Englishmen were being violated, namely the right not to be taxed without representation. The English system being that the King could not raise taxes without agreement from Parliament, an institution that slowly became more and more democratic. China is taking an interesting course, with freedom being slowly parceled out. There's also a lot of Chinese getting their education in the west. It'll be interesting. The Middle East is a good example of many peoples who currently are not ready for democracy and even with most getting sick of fear and hate, there's a lot of powerful people there who are quite willing to continue it. It's really hard to imagine the Middle East turning into a peaceful, free land of democracies soon. As for Cuba, it would be nice if they could get a working legislature with some real power and the legislature get more and more power, but not too quickly as they need their own traditions to follow.
The thing with democracy is people who have no experience with it need to be eased into it. The countries descended from the English have done not too bad with democracy as they were eased into it over hundreds of years. Some of the other western countries had a rocky road to democracy, France with how many republics, other countries such as Spain with side trips into Fascism. This is why most all the Socialist revolutions failed, they were very naive, attempted to go from serfdom to full democracy and in almost all cases the revolutions got hijacked by authoritarian arseholes who didn't give one shit about the people. How to ease them into democracy, I'm not sure.
It's a search warrant. It gives the authorities permission to search something, a phone in this case. It is not a slavery warrant, which is unconstitutional in most all western countries. You can not use a search warrant to force someone to do something (besides stand aside and not interfere). The authorities are free to break a lock, they are free to ask a locksmith to help unlock a lock. They are not free to force a locksmith to break a lock. If the authorities are incapable of breaking a lock, well tough luck. Sometimes the rule of law allows criminals to get away with crime and that is the way it is designed in a free country.
A very large star will have nuclear reactions happening through a good portion of the star, with hydrogen fusion happening near the surface, a layer below with helium fusion, another layer below that with oxygen fusion right down to the core where iron/nickel may be being synthesized. If the outer layers are blown away (think planetary nebula), you could be left with the oxygen layer at the surface. Anyways to a non-expert such as I am, it seems unlikely but not impossible and it is a big universe.
While atmosphere isn't the most accurate way of describing the outer layers of a star, it seems reasonable to use it when describing the phenomena of a stars outer layers to laymen. I can't remember how deeply we went into the proper names for the various layers of stars in school, but I think it mostly consisted of descriptions of eclipses, coronas and such. Perhaps your education didn't teach you that oxygen comes after helium and before neon in the layers of a large star, which of course leads to the possibility of the outer layers getting blown off, leaving a star with an oxygen outer layer? A quick Google does show that most all sites describe it as an oxygen atmosphere so it's not just slashdot. https://www.google.ca/search?q...
(3) Small businesses are being pushed out of business by large businesses that benefit from the economics of scale.
This is what has happened where I live. Used to be lots of small thriving stores, then big box stores moved in, including a Walmart, all of which can operate cheaper then a small business regardless of what the minimum wage is. Also years of a stagnant minimum wage here means that many people really have to be careful with their money.
and more in the sense of conservative birth policy. But that is not going to happen voluntarily, because nobody wants to stop multiplying.
Actually the evidence is pretty clear that given economics that don't require breeding labourers and/or old age support, a good chance that children will live to adulthood along with education (especially for women) and access to birth control, people will on average stop multiplying (defined as birth rate higher then replacement) and population will naturally decrease. Citation is the birth rate in all developed countries.
I'm in Canada. Our Charter of Rights, came into force in 1982, so lessons learned from the American one, specifically says that most of the rights listed apply to everybody excepting the voting right which only applies to citizens. If you think about it, it makes sense as even an illegal alien who commits a crime is deserving of the protections in the Bill of Rights.
To me an assault rifle is a weapon whose primary purpose is to assault people with. As a Canadian, the idea of someone bringing a weapon into a restaurant just seems so rude. I'm not saying people shouldn't be able to own them and take them to the firing range or even have a firing range at home, just that it is rude to take them certain places without a good reason. When I wanted to own a firearm, I realized that I had no training so I asked my neighbour, a Korean war vet and lifer in the armed forces for lessons. And he taught me that weapons are something to be treated with respect, you don't take them out unless planning to use them. And where I lived, everyone hunted, but you didn't take your weapon into restaurants or most public places. A lot of it is probably culture but to me taking a weapon into certain places is rude behaviour.
The last thing that the Democrats want is an actual Leftist nominated. They do just fine being just slightly less right then the Republicans and throwing out the odd bone to any left leaning Americans while reminding them that Coke and Pepsi are really different and you better vote for their brand of soda.
Also, "We the People" refers to all legal citizens of the United States.
Citation? In other places in the US Constitution they purposely say citizen as expected, eg voting rights, and even natural citizen in the case of President. Even now I understand legal aliens have to register for the draft and are considered part of the Militia along with felons. Even if correct, it still doesn't compute that a class of citizens (felons) wouldn't be able to bear arms. Where I am, only a Judge can remove that right, eg the other day someone was found guilty of attempted murder for shooting a cop, part of his sentence was a life long ban on firearms. Usually at sentencing, if for a firearms related crime, there is a ban, often for less then life.
Probably a culture thing, something that can vary a lot even just in different parts of town. Here the cops aren't unionized but where they are they seem to be crappier, though that may just be the cities hiring the dregs. We also recently got a civilian oversite group, mostly dealing with excessive force and cops have actually been charged with assault and murder.
It doesn't help that Windows actively hides the fact that it is an executable. I got one the other day, named something like foo.pdf.exe and a PE binary, Windows would just show foo.pdf and happily run it.
Actually the worst was that Elections Canada had subtly changed her name on the voting list and all my research said it didn't matter but it turned out to need overruling from Ottawa to agree with her ID, which lacking an address which was deemed inadequate. The returning officer at the polling place had to bug Ottawa to allow it, so it was Ottawa where the low level people didn't know their shit The Province, using mostly the same people and probably the cheapest government in Canada manages to run a decent election and the Federal government sure seemed to be trying to fuck certain people.
Don't see any serial numbers on the coins in my pocket. Even the bills just go into a pile of other bills usually when I buy something and I think the stores would be very resistant to scanning everything.
Before the last election, you really needed the minimum of ID or just someone willing to sign an affidavit saying who you were. The last election showed the negative side of voter ID laws. My wife, who doesn't drive had a hell of a time voting, spending over an hour at the polling place while phone calls went back and forth to Ottawa (thank god it wasn't busy). Seemed her Federally issued ID along with all the bills for the household weren't good enough. Of course she was one of the people that the government targeted to remove their voting franchise. There lots of stories of people who just couldn't put in the time to fight for their right to vote and therefore becoming disenfranchised. The federal government really screwed up the advance polls the last couple of elections, forcing me to take time off of work, which can be hard to do when self-employed.
So, if a person isn't trained, they shouldn't have a gun? Wow, that is more strict than most people want. Do they have to get certifications from a school or government agency to prove they are trained in the use of firearms? That is stricter than the required and enforced background checks I want.
If all able bodied males/people are supposed to be part of the militia, shouldn't they have some militia training?
'Tis funny, just the other day someone here quoted Jefferson ranting against a standing army. It's also a lot easier to overthrow a government that does not have a standing army and surely your founders were aware of the history of England during the Stuart times and how the standing army was used to back tyranny. There's also been lots of other examples of tyrants using the standing army against the people and I could see it happening in America just by labeling the people with the right negative label.
Having the government stalk you for speech puts a chill on speech. Actually it isn't just the government stalking you as your boss can have a lot of power over you as well and more people are probably scared to express themselves due to the possibility of losing their livelihood then are worried about the FBI. That's the beauty of the fascist system, just outsource the prosecution of dissidence.
Around here, what seemed to help was simply putting the cops back on the beat, so they're interacting with the people instead of sitting in their cars in an alley eating donuts. Up the page someone made the point that how beginning criminals are dealt with makes quite a difference as well as most kids experiment with things like shoplifting and need a little maturity to learn not to, rather then heavy punishment. Then there's the advert that was just on the radio, where someone dies from using their GPS while driving. Distracted driving causes a lot of accidents and is illegal.
Can anyone tell me why temporarily banning Muslim immigration from conflict areas is a bad idea? Seems like a common-sense approach to me.
A couple of points. Most (all?) the recent terrorist acts in the west have been homegrown, not imports. For example the recent Belgium and French instigators were just common small time hoods who felt very alienated in their home countries and banning their kindred makes them feel even more alienated. Shit they weren't even particularly religious, which is why they went to ISIS rather the Al Quada. (ISIS don't care if recruits are very religious with many recruits just joining for money, important when there is no work) It plays into the narrative that ISIS is trying to paint, namely that the west hates Muslims so lets go to war. Along with the west bombing them, starving them and screwing with their affairs, a ban just expands the hatred. It is also leverage that the local authoritarian types can use to gain power. You just have to look at this election, which seems to consist of mostly extreme authoritarian types playing on fear.
Many Republicans want certain parts of the government to be large. The part that spies on people to make sure they aren't doing anything immoral or fun is a common one as well as the other parts that are needed to keep the lesser people and various low class criminals in check. These Republicans are fine with the idea of cameras in your bedroom to make sure you don't have fun. Then there are the Republicans that want to replace the government with corporations on the theory that corporations never include mercenaries like Blackwater (or whatever they're now called) or police (Pinkertons) and it is more efficient to vote with their wallets and/or sue to change behaviour, which is true for small corporations where there is competition but questionable for the very large. Of course corporations have no problem with large government as long as it is used to socialize the costs and keep competition away.

The coverage in the US seems much better then in Canada, prices are cheaper as well.
Mostly the ones who made a conscious decision to not have a cock.
