I've also seen a ton of comment about Bush and Ashcroft how they will prosecute anyway because they are for the Corporate Republic blah blah blah. Lets remember that Bush didn't pass the DMCA- Clinton did! Ashcroft is doing his job by upholding a standing law. Personally I prefer politicians that don't selectively follow the law but uphold them no matter how bad they are until someone gets them changed..

Dimitry broke a law plain and simple, and it wasn't to make some sort of statement, he didnt' release his product open source, he was doing it to make money. I'm sorry but /. needs a better martyr then this.

Yes it is hypocritical for media to do this and in the case of Big Brothervs. the 60 minutes episode I'd venture to say this was a case of the left hand not knowing what the right was doing.

What I don't understand is why this is yet another rant about big media taking over our lives. The real issue is the fact that people buy this stuff. The networks sell the things that make money and people want to see sex and violence.

There is another big hypocracy here. That is this article. Katz says that the Net is not so bad, which is true there is a lot of misconceptions and paranoia. But he also implies that protecting children from say pornography is bad. Now I agree there is no good way to do it yet but my point is that porn on the net is no different than Big Brother (i.e. sex appeals to people) so why is one trashy and the other not? It seem to me that Katz himself has a double standard.

The real issue here is that people choose to believe what's on TV, they choose to install filters on their home computers (which I don't understand what your beef is there, not everyone thinks the same way and if they own the computer then its their right to but whatever they want on it.). And people vote to pass laws that install them on public computers. Is it stupid and paranoid? Yes. Does it violate your rights? Not really. Can it been changed? Yes if you quit whining and go vote!

And Jon's attack on Senator Lieberman is completely destroys any shread of credibility he may have had. If you don't like him don't vote for him but lets not get into personal attacks.

Its different because 'Illustrator' is a word that common sense would say can't be trademarked, plus its the name of the product. Whether or not the 'KIllustrator' people were trying to steal users from Adobe is iffy but really I think they were simply trying to let users know that it was a program that does a similar thing.

This case is much sinister. MySQL is the company name not just a product that they make. It seems to me that NuSphere is trying to fool people into believeing that they have the genuine MySQL when in fact they do not. MySQL AB seems to be complaining because, 1. NuSphere is requiring registration to get software that they wrote. 2. NuSphere is releasing the Gemini table type in violation of MySQL's lisense (unclear on this but isn't it GPL?) because its not open. And 3. NuSphere is trying to capitalize on MySQL's popularity by stealing the name. I think the MySQL folks (no matter what you think of their database) are perfectly justified in their action. They don't mind NuSphere extending MySQL but they want people to play by their rules because it their work and they have that right.

*sigh* This statement contridicts your whole argument Jon. I'm not sure if you are against having so much information or against "big media" ... what's the point? Your statement above is your opinion. Personally I think that people in general in the US, not just young onescould stand to lose a few of their luxuries. Life is more interesting now? When most of us sit around for an average of EIGHT HOURS watching a flashing box??? Come-on!

People don't pay attention anymore to anything because its convienent to be ignorant. People want their little pre-packaged fast-food lives. When it comes to technology people don't choose something better because they can't learn it instantly.

Maybe I'm paranoid but I truely believe that apathy is going to cause the destruction of America. Although maybe that's not so bad :). The funny irony is that Katz himself is a victim. This article runs around blaming everything but the real problem so as not offend anyone. The real problem is that people need to start caring about things that really matter. I know that most people on /. don't do the religion thing but even if you don't that whole "Love thy neighbor" thing can come in handy. Okay getting back on topic :)

The point is that attention isn't a natural resource in limited supply, we can't run out of it. We have to choose at any given point what to pay attention to. The real problem is that people don't care what happens in politics, or society or technology or anything else. We've become so individualized that no-one else matters.

With Linux I'd say at least half the people who use it have probably contributed something, probably more. How many everyday people do you hear praising Windows? I'd say the vast majority of regular users complain about it but they accept it because they think its all there is.

So lets restate: M$oft obviously has more users. How many are developers for their product? -- None. How many of their users actually praise everything they do and would never go away even when presented with a better product? -- Not alot. So if there are about 10 million Linux users world wide and assuming half develop (5 million). And M$oft I saw somewhere has 38,000 employees. Say 20,000 are developers for them. We out number their developers 2500 to 1. I think we can use this resource.
