Jon you've gone way too far. Open source is great but open source is NOT, I repeat NOT what defines us a human beings. A revolution? Of what? oh wise Jon Katz, why don't you define revolution for us I'm sorry but I hardly compare open source software to our independence from much less the return of Jesus to earth.
And this segment is downright inflamatory... not only is it stupid but it completely degrades a belief that a lot of people find very important.
Jon you might as well claim you're Jesus and start some sort of bizarre techno cult
I think I'll turn you off in my preferences now, you used to at least be entertaining with your naivity but there's no execuse for being completly stupid.

This isn't about employees not releasing proprietary information and you are right. No employee should do that. But this is about companies preventing employees from getting new jobs unless they change their entire field, that's stupid and a violation of rights, I for one will never sign any agreement that says I can't work for whoever would hire me.

Optimization for the job: Someone commented earlier about optimizing X when its just a client. I know its cool that X can run over a network but for most cases its just not needed. Joe Luser doesn't need X to run over the network
More uniformity in widget sets. Nothing annoys me more than for buttons to look different between apps. And I know this is confusing to average users. It sounds stupid but some users truely ask "Why do the OK buttons look different between Netscape and this KDE dialog, do they act different?" Uniformity is ingrained.
Ability to customize: X already has this but I mention it before the flames about having a uniform system. What I'd like to see is a balance, one in which you can customize the crap out of anything (if you want your OK buttons to look different across apps...fine!). But one where all versions/distros whatever has a nice clean same looking interface for Joe Luser.
I know it will never happen but what I would Love to see is a common widget set API. Then you could have the widget set embedded in the window manager or the X server and all apps inherit in when they run. You wank GTK alright, you want QT, alright. If there was some way to have a layer that calls for buttons or whatever could be translated to the appropriate function calls to do the same thing. I'm not much on GUI programming but I think it would be an awesome idea.

Not sure why I'm replying to this. Jon this one is the most mind-numbing I've read in awhile. What revolution? The idea that the Internet (which is a non-living thing) can change the world into some idea that the media has is absurd, its people that change the world, and we can't seem to do that with or without the Internet because the Internet has absolutely nothing to do with people's quality of life. While there are capitalists there will always be poverty.
Also you contridict yourself with the whole Wal-Mart argument. Small time merchants aren't backlashing against Wal-Marts, by getting on the Internet these merchants are doing the exact same thing-- offering everything you want in one place... I happen to like Wal-Mart. I don't want to go to 6 different places to buy six different things.
My last point is that businesses who lobby or use litigation against other businesses is nothing new and also has nothing to do with the Internet. 1-800-Contact does business over the Internet yes, but over the phone as well. I don't think that merchants look just for companies who use the Internet to sell products, they look for companies that are undermining their bottom line, yes its wrong, its anti-competiative, and its stupid to bring up in this article because it will happen anyway. The board-of-directors of these companies are not sitting in dark rooms trying to bring the destruction of the Internet.
Face facts Jon, the Internet is a tool. It is a very good tool, it provides me with a job. It is not a utopia, or a cure all for the world's problems, people don't suddenly stop acting like people just because they are in a chat room. the internet is not a revolution, its a tool and no amount of Jon-Katz paranoia is going to change that.
The more I read your articles the more I'm convinced that you are nothing more than a well written Perl script.

it so that the operating system itself were circumventing the copyprotection, and therefore ought to be declared illegal?
Possible but I think that even M$oft would be against this one because it would make all current versions of Windoze illegal as well. That could be an interesting battle, M$oft against the MPAA and RIAA. Not sure who would win.

You are absolutely right, I don't know what it will be like or what she will think of it or what will happen, however that's where two things come to play, 1. Love, 2. Communication.
You mentioned that should sex not be satisfying that it would be hard to talk about. That's the major difference, sex is a very important part of a marrage, if you can't talk about something that's that important (i.e. explaining to each other what you like or don't like) then I think the relationship is going down anyway. I feel that I love her enough to be able to take the time and care about what she wants. Those are things that make the relationship work.
You are right that there is not a 100% perfect way to enter a relationship, but I choose to do it in a manner consistant with my belief structure. Also and I don't have a copy of this but I have read statistics that show engaged couples who have sex before they get married have a higher occurance of sexual dysfunction (especially on the part of the women) when they get married, as opposed to those who waited.

/. has a general disclaimer at the bottom of all the comment pages stating that the comments are owned by whoever posted them. You could be sued for something you say here already. AOL is trying to make sure they don't get sued for something that someone else said using their service. I think that's a really good thing. ISPs or service providers or websites should not be responsible for what their users say.

.. and you will never have to confiscate guns or drugs or condoms from them.
What the hell is wrong with condoms? In my opinion, safe sex is one of the most important things you should teach teenagers.
The problem is that they aren't 100% effective and the only 100% is abstenence. Now before everyone looks at my nickname and says I'm just one of those stupid Christians who "just thinks that way", let me say that abstenence is intellegent. I'm a 22-year-old virgin, I plan on getting married pretty soon to a girl who is also a virgin. Neither of us will have to worry about AIDs, or other diseases, I don't have to worry about supporting some other child that I had years ago, and neither of us will have to worry about guilt of having had other partners in the past. (Which believe it or not causes stress on our relationship). All these things remove one of the biggest reasons to ever get divorced... Condoms are a bad idea.

1. Before MS came along, computers were unaffordable. Now we all reap the benefits of a computer in every home.
Apple? Anyone? I know that I was in Elementary school in the mid 80's everyone had Apple IIs
2. MS have consistently brought down prices - they cut prices in the spreadsheet market; they are producing software that is cheaper than what was their before. And they're still doing it. MS Sql Server, which is at least on a par with Oracle, is much cheaper than it, and thus benefits consumers that way.
Really? Linux is free, so is free BSD. Even Linux companies selling the software sell their Proffesional editions for less than Win98. The same stuff that Win2k can do. And I won't even touch lisencing issues for the number of users. Still don't believe it? If they aren't a monopoly then why did WinME start off at $50 and go up to $89 after everyone had been locked into it?
3. Believe it or not, Microsoft actually do produce good software. Certainly Windows 3.1 wasn't very stable, but in 1992 what competition was there? Certainly not Linux. And even given that, if you ask me if I want my secretary on the current state of the art Linux, or on Windows 3.1 and Word 2, I'll bet you a dollar to a hundred that she'll be more effective on Windows 3.1
Competition? What about Mac? I'm not a Mac lover but I can tell you that Mac was better in 1984 when it came out than 3.1 ever was. And I'd give my secretary Linux with star office. Its more compatable with Office now than Word 2 would be!
4. Microsoft have benefitted the US economy. It really has. Compared with the UK, for instance, the strength of the US IT industry is vast - and much of this strength is due to Microsoft.
It would probably be stronger here and strong in other countries had MS not stiffled competition all over the world.
5. Nearly all opposition to MS comes from jealous competitors. Netscape have been beaten fair-and-square by MS, for instance -just compare Netscape 6 with MSIE, for instance. This just backs up my point - Microsoft software is of exceptional quality. They hire the best programmers because they can afford to, and they release top software. Word beats anything else on the market, and as a usable OS, so does Windows (and on stability, Windows 2000 ranks pretty highly to). Combine this with easy administration - the idiot in my office is in charge of DNS administration, which he can easily do using MS DNS manager, because it's just point, right click/properties. He'd have no chance with Bind.
The fact is, for a small business with not many staff, Microsoft software allows them to compete with the big guys - they can offer ISP provision, because they don't need highly paid admins. This is great news for the economy and great news for them.
I've worked as a Unix admin and I doubt that I could pick up Win2k or NT and just know it out of the box like you suggest. Just because something is point and click doesn't mean its easier (fact is alot of people find it to be a pain). Win2k isn't all that bad I agree, I have friends that use it but they are highly trained proffesionals, Joe user can't pick up DNS and operate it until he even knows what it does. If MS products are so easy why does MS have the MCSE? And why are there countless Word for Dummies type books?
6. The fact is, as I have stated, there is a lot of jealousy and resentment out there - whereas the truth is that Microsoft produce damn fine software, and their very low prices (believe me - just check the price of a spreadsheet 20 years ago), mean that although they have a monopoly, that has come through selling good software at low prices and therefore high volume. Damaging Microsoft would damage the consumer. What do you want people to use? Star Office?
Actually as has been shown countless times their power has come through threats and lying and theivery. Not just netscape but as mentioned above, Samba, Wine to name a few. Microsoft doesn't play fair and we'd all have better software if they had to compete. And for the record some people like Star Office and Netscape and don't have compatability issues with it.

Ummm nooooo. Aside from some of the other obvious reasons why this wouldn't work pointed out by other replies to your post, can you just imagine a world where all Internet is controlled by the Telco??? Seriously who in this country likes their telco? I've never heard of one that gets high marks for customer service. If we let telco's control all of the Internet connection services then you might kiss P2P good bye since no one will ever be able to connect! Its far more convientent for the average Windoze luser to deal with a smaller ISP (who knows their customer is what keeps them in business) and let them deal with the big corporate provider. Come to think of it I personally would much rather deal with ISPs than the stupid telco.
Just as an example I tried to get DSL installed a few months ago from the telco, they gave me huge promises on dates of when it would be installed, yadda yadda. That date came and went and different departments started blaming each other for the mix-up. I never got any answers and I never got DSL. Finally I simply canceled my order 2 months after the install date. that was nearly 4 since I'd made the request! Stupid telcos.

What really needs to happen is a way to compensate artists for their music and not the RIAA. Thats the inherent problem, the artists are still being stolen from the RIAA is just mad because now the users have figured out how to steal from both the artists and the RIAA.
The best idea I can think of is for some of the big artists to go off on their own and make their songs availiable for a small fee (50 cents?) without giving one red cent to a record company. In the end everyone would win. We would get (almost free) music, the artist gets compensated and the greedy executives that control the RIAA are out of jobs. (which is a very pleasing thought).

I'm really hoping that your post is sarcasm. True criminals would be hurt by such an application but to state that people don't move is ludicrous! I'm 21 and I've moved 15 times in my life, across two continents. People in today's society move all the time and that will only increase. Such an application will defenately affect everyone who owns electronics. There are better ways to deter crime.

I don't think that books will go away anytime soon, they may decrease in popularity but I think that there are enough people out there who absolutely hate reading for long periods of time from a computer screen. Its hard on the eyes for one thing. E-book is an okay idea for some people but I don't think its the same as being free from electronic devices, curling up in a nice warm place with a good book.
Its sort of the myth of the paperless office. People have been saying we'll stop using paper for years and even though we could do that doesn't mean that we should or will. I work for an ISP and we have paper all over the place. I think the same will be true of books.

Cyber romances are a far cry from having an actual live person to talk to and get to know. The Net perpetuates what I call the 'guy code'. Us guys typically say whatever we think will get us nookie or at least whats going to keep the relationship going. Really I think women do the same thing. Anyway, on the Net its very easy to make sure you never say anything stupid, its much simpler to think about what you are saying to the other person. You have to type before you send in most cases and so stupid statements get filtered out. I've met lots of people online and of the few I've met, I've found their real life personality is nothing like that one I saw in chat rooms. People could spend years in chat rooms and never really get to know one another because they don't see each others mannerisms, they don't hear voice inflection and other non-verbal communication and they don't get to see how that person reacts in certain situations.
I think that some people get lucky and it works out for them, but I think that for the most part having a cyber relationship is a good way to set yourself up to be burned.
As far as the idea of being married already and doing these sorts of things, I think that its wrong because I think it would hurt one's spouse.

The trick for little ISPs is to grow, I'm in a mid sized town in Texas, DSL is here, Cable is here, AOL is here but we are by far the largest provider in town (something like 20,000 accounts). Rather than just rolling over we've done things like re-sell DSL service, it costs a little more but customers never have to deal with the morons that are Southwestern Bell, plus we offer additional benefits that SWB doesn't. We're also offering satilite links to customers outside the city that can't get other broadband access. Our dial-up service is not much more than the average (we charge $15 a month rather than $10). I really think ISPs can grow if they continue with the top notch support, as well as adopting new technology, use the stupidity of the big broadband providers to your advantage and you will win everytime.

Mason looks okay but its still developing script within the HTML, when working with designers who don't know perl this becomes a problem. I've been using a mod called HTML::Template for some time now and I highly recommend it to anyone building web pages with Perl. HTML template allows a set of specialized HTML tags in that actual HTML documents that a separate script uses to insert data. It has varables and loops and if/else structures.
HTML::Template can also do caching of HTML pages when used with mod perl, plus the tags are ignored by commonly used HTML editors such as Dreamweaver. All in all I think its a much better solution.
