This is definatly interesting, but its a car ad. Why does everything that even mentions the word 'Linux' end up on the front page of/.? This article doesn't really say anything about the system other than it being Linux.
On another note I think the car looks pretty cool and who cares what the car looks like the stupid thing has a 353 HP!!!

Use fertilizer. Really I wouldn't normally comment on something like this but this time, as someone who has lived in far worse places than the US, I feel I must.
One of the problems with/. and with the media in general is that the only things that ever get talked about are negative. Here at/. we worry about corporations taking our freedom especially in the area of computers. This is good, because someone has to do it. But in reality, those of use living in the US have it pretty good, and most of the stuff that gets posted on/. gets horribly skewed by raging paranoia.
A few things to remember:
Corporations want to make money no matter where in the world they are
Corporation will bend laws to make money no matter who it hurts
Greed will ensure that rule 1 and 2 always exist
We can't have it both ways. We let the gov't control all production and we'll end up like Russia.
As for the US government I'm a little annoyed by the idea in this article that none of them have even read the constitution. This is not at all true. I have met several of my own representatives and I truely believe that they are trying to do what they feel is best for the people. Those of us reading/. and using Linux need to understand that most people out there just want to have nice homes, families, and jobs and make money. They don't want to worry about the l33t h@X0rs trying to get into their computers. The lawmakers aren't trying to take our freedom. They are trying to give people what they want. Average Joe windoze user doesn't understand that legislation will do nothing to effect what's on the Internet.
So back to my original comment. If the grass is greener on the other side, use fertilizer. Move to italy but it won't change anything. Educate the people that vote for your government and change everything. You don't like corporations, don't buy what the sell. Sadly everyone complains about the phone company, the internet service but no one stops buying it. I guess here in america we can't live without those things.
I've lived in a 3rd world country, people dont' have the right to get a decent meal everyday much less 3 and much less the ability to speak out freely about their conditions. But you know, a lot of those people are happy anyway. Maybe the best thing that could happen for us here in america is if we put away our fax machines, phones, pagers and computers for awhile and try to see what's really important, probably cut down on the problems with snooping greeding corporations as well.
The problem with that is the fact the company selling the software is making money, therefore they have advertising power. Everyone hears about this company's crappy product and knows nothing about the good windows version of Everybuddy. Its the basic problem with open source software, there's not enough money to tell the public how much better it is, therefore no one but the handful of geeks are using it.
Can you say retarded? Hi I own a website and I want to make absolutely sure that no one uses the name in their websites because I came up with that idea and if anyone uses it I will sue them! Hmmmm I wonder why no one comes to my website anymore... oh well no one is hurting my good name.....

Ummm that logic is a bit off. If I buy a new car the manufactuer gets paid once if I in turn sell that car two people have benefited from the car. Me and the person I sold it to. The manufactuer shouldn't get paid again. Its their job to come up with new ideas and make better cars. They aren't just selling rubber and metal. I can still remember a car I used to own but I can't drive it anymore. Likewise with a book I can remember it but I can't read it again unless I get it again. Authors do produce content. Being a writer myself I know it is my job to come up with NEW content that people will read rather than trying to milk everyone who has seen my work for all they are worth.
Sometimes I really have to wonder just how dumb legislatures are. I mean, sure their getting money from passing laws like this one, but don't they realize that harmful laws like this effect them too? I guess anyone will do something for a buck.
The article is very interesting but I don't see many speed bumps ahead other than a million court disputes over which version of UCITA is right. Either way its bad of OSS simply because in on these battles it will be the Open-Source side that gets slapped with the gag-orders and injunctions that keep us from doing business.
Stand up for your rights, fight UCITA when it comes to your state.
Besides, these evil drug dealers are usually kids with divorced parents and/or fathers who beat them, and
are socially rejected because their parents haven't taught them basic social skills, and turn to drug dealing to make
friends, get respect, and also money.
So what? Does that mean they are above the law? I agree that we need to do more drug counseling and less criminalization but a change in president isn't likely going to make that happen (changes in congress), plus the majority of Americans don't think that way. Bush wouldn't say these thing if he didn't think the American people want to hear it.
What I'm sick of is people blaming external factors for their problems. Its not the kids fault because his parents got divorced. That's crap, the kid hears all over the place the dangers of drugs and if he chooses to use them then he faces the consequences. I pray for the day when people in this country take some responsibility for their actions, I think Bush wants us to do that too.
wha-? What does abortion have to do with Nader? As far as I know Nadar hasn't even said anything about it. He's a liberal so he's probably pro-choice.
The fact is it really don't make much of a difference if the pres is pro-choice or pro-life. I'm very much a pro-life person but I also understand the ramifications of making abortions illegal, I think anyone smart enough to make it to the Supreme Court is smart enough to figure that one out too. Its the lesser of two evils.

Franklin Servan-Schreiber, the director of communications and new
media for the International Olympic Committee, is keenly aware of the
tension between property rights and unfettered coverage of the
Games. But, he said, "I don't think the I.O.C. can be seen in any way
limiting speech about the Olympics." He pointed out that 20,000
journalists are in Sydney - nearly twice as many media people as
athletes, all free to cover the Games as they see fit.
Yeah right, this is such a ploy to make money. What do these journalists have to do before they can "freely" report on the Olympics? If they don't have to do anything then the IOC is shooting themselves in the foot with this statement, because anyone can be a journalist, even athletes that are there and therefore they are limiting speech.
Its quite obvious that they have no legal basis for that, but hey they are an "International organization that is dedicated to promoting peace by playing the Olympic games". Translating to: we can sue you in your courts but suing us would start and international incident and no one would let you do it.
THis is such BS, I guess its time for everyone to boycott the olympics.
I heard on CNN yesterday that Microsoft's new chip for set-top and hand-held devices would be made by Toshiba, is it possible they are whining now so when they introduce M$oft's chip all other compeditors are discredited?
I completely disagree that Linux can't be easy to use. I have a female friend who has never owned a computer in her life but really needed one for school. She had used Windows in the school labs but couldn't afford to buy a copy. We found her a cheap computer and installed Mandrake 6.1 with KDE and Star Office and of course Netscape. She was right at home, uses it all the time for her school work and the Internet and even hates to go to the labs and use Windows again. The whole "Linux is to hard to use" is a complete myth that needs to be dispelled quickly by people who are more technical. How many Windows users do you know who configure their own machines... very few, Linux and Windows configure differently but the majority of users are going to get things done for them by a tech no matter what they are using. Personally I think a "For Dummies" book is a great idea because it will show users that they can in fact use Linux and it really isn't hard at all, its just different.
One of my favorite things about Linux is its diversity from Windows. Extremely tedious tasks in Windows take a few lines of a shell script in Linux; I can see almost all of the source code to my applications and can configure my working environment to the hilt.
That's true and its something I love about Linux as well, however Joe LUser doesn't know or want to learn how to do shell scripts, he wants pretty buttons to click all day long and he wants his apps to look all the same. Its amazing how users can't do the SIMPLIST tasks even in Windows.
The thing that will make Linux ready for Joe up here is when we have a common interface with common buttons to look at and a common office suite. Joe doesn't care if he's using Linux/Windows/Mac he just wants everything to look the same. The customizeability of Linux and X is awesome and I love it but it isn't for everyone. If Linux wants to reach users there has to be something common for the user to look at. That's why I'm really glad that Sun et. al. are adopting Gnome, KDE and Gnome would be really smart to stop their whining/bickering and develop a system that works together for the good of the community.
Finally to sort of stay on topic, if Office does get ported, (and personally I think it will eventually) this could bring users to Linux because businesses are suddenly going to say "hmmm $89 for each copy of windows, $0 for each copy of Linux" and it still runs the same stuff, Office etc. Businesses would likely switch to Linux in droves if the port is worth it. Personally I think that if M$oft did something to delebratly sabatoge a Linux port that it would seriously backfire on them. If Linux had half the desktop market share doing something like that would mean something, but Linux isn't a theat to M$oft yet, at least not in the desktop area. So look for a nasty bug in Office 2005 for Linux:) hehe
I suppose the title could be "Rise of the Empire" but what about the Clone Wars? There's been rumors for months that the next Episode show us what happened there... besides why would Lucas even need to make a the third one if the Empire is going to show up now? I'll believe it when I see it.
Its interesting that so many people on/. are against standards. There's nothing wrong with standards so long as they are not controlled by one company. I think its interesting that we have 5 big names involved in this one. This is defenatly something Linux needs. So everyone might start using Gnome on Linux. So what? You don't have to use it, and they didn't squish anyone to get there it is just the one being adopted. Maybe that only means its the best.
Hey what about visual basic? When I took a VB class in school we had to create those stupid little tab boxes. Is Adobe going to sue M$oft too. Haha Bill will claim its the developer's responsibility to not use the "feature" and I'll get sued for the 100 line "Calculate-your-tax" program I wrote for a class:)
This wasn't meant as a flame, nor was I trying to say that all research is done for money. I know that's not true. My point is that research is for a goal. If you ask a researcher what they are doing the research for they may say they enjoy it but most of them (in my opinion) are not going to say that they do it just to research something. I would guess that most people do research with a goal in mind. (Such as to create a machine that can fly, then figuring out how to do this). Money is a by-product of big break-throughs.
I'm reading this article and really I'm not seeing anything new. Where does the idea come from that the media is somehow outside the marketplace? The fact is that the media has always been about making money and recently the Internet has done a lot to turn that around:
But until recently, we clung loosely to the notion that some institutions -- politics, journalism, academe, art and culture - stood outside the marketplace at least somewhat beyond bottom-line calculations. That was important, especially in afree and prosperous society. That principle established their credibility and helped keep social forces like big business and big technology in some sort of check and balance.
I'm sorry but this just isn't a true statement. Artists want to make money... they always have, even in the days of the Renissanse. They are apart of the market just like we are today. Politians have been greedy thieves throughout history, people who want power and money... while there are some who genuinely care about the people I think the majority fit right into the Marketplace. American culture is sadly all about making money and it has been pretty much from the early 1800s when the Industrial Revolution came along.
Allow me to shift gears and comment as well on your issue with university patents: I attend a university and frankly I'd love to see my school develop new technology and sell it. Why? Because it benefits me by keeping my tuition down, providing me with smaller class sizes by adding buildings and gives me a school that I can be proud of. While I doubt my school does this now, I think its a great idea. It doesn't disservice the students at -- most of whom probably will not make some kind of break-through invention that will award them millions. This way everyone gets a little slice of the pie. Personally I don't see why JonKatz would have a problem with this because thats the so called "Corporate Republic" giving money to the higher cause of Education.
Corporations are obviously not the best thing in the world but we wouldn't have technology without them. The media itself is a corporation so maybe we shouldn't trust Jon Katz either:)
These programs may seem to work, in the beginning, just like Distributed.net and Seti@home, gigakeys and work-units flow in, but the represent busywork, No ciphers have been cracked and no aliens found

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I almost fell out of my chair when I read that. ASP in COBOL???? Revolutionary??? Maybe Microsoft should also bring back some UNIVACS to run their.NET servers on:)
Marketing. They do it, why shouldn't we? Seriously how many ads for RedHat or FreeBSD do you see on TV or billboards? I'm a communication/PR/technical person, people really don't care what the software does or who makes it or how much it costs. They want name recognition. Its not enough to prove to people that *ix is better or that M$ is evil. That's fairly easy to prove. We have to wage war against M$ where it counts and that's in the mind of the public. Joe Public usually dislikes Microsoft and the cost and buggyness of the product but he usually doesn't know that an alternative exists!
I think its really time that the community organized some kind of ad campaign to let the public know where we stand on such a thing. Now is the time to do it to before the presidential elections. The republican are all geared up reverse the break-up decision. Why? Because the public doesn't care. But if public opinion were against M$oft then they would back down very quickly because they would be sure to lose votes over it.
