Back in *August* they postponed the project to improve the picture quality. But on Thursday they cancelled it outright. Apparently they could not improve the picture quality.

This is what i just did. $450 Dell sc400 server (2.8ghz, gigabit, serial ata, etc) $60 ECC 256mb DDR400 ram (cheaper to buy at newegg) $200 2 Serial ata 36gb 10K RPM raptor drives. run them in software raid 1 with Fedora. $100 UPS.
Buy one more system than you need so that you always have a spare machine for parts or whatever. You wouldn't go around driving without a spare tire would you? And at prices like this, there's no excuse.
Of course if you have a few dozen servers, go with blades/rackmounts. The above is certainly not as scaleable.
Well, i was illustrating the minimum acceptable scenario. Shoe string budget if you will. I have some Creative 7.1 speakers i bought from newegg for about $150 that work great. For my home theater I'm using the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1's. A pretty good bang for the buck I'd say for about $400. Alternatively, you could buy a great pair of headphones for $150 and buy a cheap subwoofer and sit on it. Is that better?:)
Here's a link to a bunch of screenshots btw of another pj.
Well you can always use a cheap $100 tv to watch the news etc. Or with the proper combination of a smaller high gain screen (80" dalite hipower) and a high lumen output pj (say >1500 lumens) you can get a very good image with ambient light.
Replacement bulbs will cost about 300-500, depending on the model. they can last from 2000-4000 hours, also depending on the model. So you could watch a movie a day for like 2 years for approx 25-50cents iguess. Peanuts really.
If you're ready to plunk down a few thousand on a plasma or hdtv, then front projection is hands down the best bang for the buck!!!
I have a Sanyo PLV-70 PJ that does 1380x768 native. It has an MSRP of $8,000. But you can find one for about $4,000. I used the Infocus X2 as an example of a low cost entry level PJ.
My HTPC video card is configured right now to do 1360x768.
Front Projection/home theater stuff has become my new hobby now that upgrading PC's is so cheap and easy.
There is a much better bang for the buck that almost anyone can afford. It's called front projection. I have the equivalent of a 105" plasma screen running at 1360x768. (plv70, hipower, htpc) And the image is absolutely incredible. You can spend less than $1500 and get 80"-100" with surround sound.
$900 Infocus X2 projector (800x600) $100 progressive scan player $150 5.1 surround sound home theater in abox $50 cables and stuff $300 Dalite Hipower 80" screen/portable tripod (use a white wall while you're saving up)
But I'd say getting a PJ like the Panasonic AE700 at around $2500 is the best value.
Oh and go get an xbox which will do alot of games in hidef like Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, underground, etc. Just look on the back of the box or search on the web.
And you can connect you PC to these and surf the web etc. And they're light as hell. 20lbs. Compare that with a $100lb+ tv. bleh.
THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO WATCH MOVIES FOR SUCH LITTLE MONEY. Suffice it to say, i don't go to the movie theaters anymore.:)
List of highly recommended pj's: http://www.projectorcentral.com/recommended -home-t heater-projectors.htm
I believe the remote for the cable box is programmable to control the receiver as well. Mine came with a pamphlet with a list of remote codes for various vendors.
That's not quite correct. Synchros act as a frictional buffer and suffer wear. The greater the difference in speeds of the engine and wheels, the more friction they need to buffer. Double clutching matches the engine speed to the wheel speed without friction.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission6.htm
Synchros are fine for most people, unless you drive aggressively. If you're traveling in 5th gear at 50 mph and change into 4th gear, then all is good. But what if you want to drop into a lower gear for the extra power?
Let's say I'm traveling at 50mph, then I put the car in neutral causing the RPM's to fall to idle because something ahead made me think I might need to stop. Turns out it was nothing, and now I want to speed up really fast to 75mph so I switch into 3rd gear while i'm still moving at 50mph
The transition to much higher rpms (~5K Rpm) from idle in 3rd gear at 50mph will cause some serious grinding/bucking even with synchros. And the problem gets worse when you're in lower gears as the ratio between RPM's from gear to gear is higher. try getting into first gear at 20mph, without double clutching. Synchros will get fucked after awhile. That's when you need to double clutch. Which is why most people want to drive manuals, to get the best bang for the buck performance wise...
Your position is absolute nonsense. The point is that the car is NOT NORMAL.
Next time get into a car and start driving at 30 mph like the poster said he was doing. Then floor the gas pedal like the shorted cruise control did. It only takes a *few* seconds before the car hits 50mph, which is a reasonable amount of time before someone caught off guard will think "oh shit the cruise control is fucked" and start hitting the brakes.
Go ahead, reach 50mph and step on the breaks while the gas pedal is still floored. Don't just read about it and pretend you know what will happen. Just pray those followup posts you read about weren't talking out of their asses.
It's really quite pathetic that so many people here blindly accept things as long as someone else believes it. Don't believe everything that you read.
And btw, i've seen an investigation where a short like this was the cause of accidents. And the brakes were not enough even from a dead stop in the case of an SUV. I suppose it was because of the extra horsepower and torque because of the engine.
Ideally, you want to double clutch. After disengaging the current gear, let the clutch back in while in neutral, then blip the engine, then disengage clutch and change gears quickly before the RPM gets too low again. This allows the entire assembly to spin up to proper speed while the clutch is engaged in neutral.
Some people avoid this by blipping the engine a little more. Your mileage may vary. literaly.:P
btw, you need to double clutch in open wheel formula cars because they have no synchros which is what allows common street cars to downshift without killing the gears.
anyone happen to know how much email+attachments evolution can hold? I support users with Outlook PST files that easily get in the 2-3 GB range, and they prefer to archive as little as possible.
I find this hard to believe. I know nothing about the field, and I'll bet that whatever those researchers estimate will take 2-3 times longer. Practical quantum computers in a hundred 60-100 years.:)
...which is a maybe why I don't like this movie. I had trouble truly empathizing with any particular character. Same with star wars (all of them). I found luke skywalker especially annoying.
I'd have to say Aliens, predator, and Matrix were much better films off the top of my head.
I'd like to raise my hand here too. I've been downloading HD movies and tv shows recently from HDTV newsgroups. Matrix Reloaded 720 is about 4.5 gigs. LOTR TTT EE 1080 is 18.5 gigs. I'm using a $24 unlimited downloading monthly account from giganews.com via cable modem.
Does anyone know of any bitorrent sites or anything else that is a good source of HDTV stuff? Until I came across the newgroups, I was on the verge of getting Voom and a DVHS so that I could archive shows with HD-WM9 in 1080 to a terabyte raid 5 server.
DVD quality doesn't cut it on my 100" hdtv screen.
BTW, hard drive size growth has been slowing down because they are reaching the areal density limits of platters. storagereview.com has a recent blurb about this.
I've been considerering getting a DVHS system to record my favorite shows via Voom. Then I'd like to compress them with an HD codec like HD WM9 and store them on my drives or DVD-R's. Are there any decent HD codec alternatives and related software?
I am specifically interested in people's experience with 1920x1080p encoding.
BTW, the Bravo D3 will be able to play WM9 HD material.
Go RTFA again.

that's an interesting idea. Go back to drives 5.25" size. I used to have an old 100MB Seagate scsi drive drive that was that size... lol.
I wonder how large that would go with today's areal densities packed with 5.25" platters. 2TB?
