Software Development is about solving problems given a limited amount of resources and time. And as with any "project", software or not, things get harder to manage as they get larger.
"The memos are email conversations among Microsoft executives in 1991 and 1992 that discuss deliberately crippling a beta copy of Windows 3.1 so it would produce an obscure error message if run atop DR-DOS, a competing operating system now owned by Caldera. The code to check for the existence of DR-DOS was encrypted and obfuscated -- it was the only encrypted code in the beta -- but was cracked by programmer Andrew Schulman and published in Dr. Dobbs Journal in 1993 [9a]. Schulman discovered that the code searched for tiny differences between MS-DOS and DR-DOS, and when it found the latter it displayed an obscure but worrying error message: "Non-fatal error detected: Error #4D53. (Please contact Windows 3.1 Beta Support.)" The non-MS-detecting code was dropped into 5 places in the beta Win 3.1 code and, according to Schulman, had no possible legitimate purpose in ensuring the proper functioning of Windows. The code was still present in three places in the shipping Win 3.1 product, but had a single byte flipped to disable it."
I imagine this is just the tip of the iceberg. OpenGL sandbagging...
agreed. At night, instead of high beams, I usually use my left blinker and leave it on for a bit. Not so useful during the day. But that will usually get their attention, along with a combination of changing lanes back and forth in a relaxed manner, while using my turn signals.
BTW, my biggest pet peeve are people who change lanes without using turn signals. Especially when I'm on my motorcycle.
Prion disease might be an in issue if you started ingesting the biofuel.:P
On a slightly different note, I wonder what consequences it will have on the utilization of farm animals. Kind of puts a different twist on the idea of horsepower.:(:)
The PLV-70 can be had for about 4k. The Dalite hipower screen tripod king a few hundred. You can get a panasonic pt-ae700u 1280x720 pj for about $1700. Or an infocus X1 800x600 for $650.
I'd recommend a 60"-80" hipower screen to get a bright picture with a 1000 lumen pj.
Also, I'm sure your Sharp 45" LCD is a great tv. However, for that screen size the extra resolution won't make that much of a difference unless you're sitting really close. From afar, they all look pretty damn good.
And unfortunately there isn't that much 1080 HD content out there. Get an HD DVR system to get the most out of your set. Enjoy!
1. I play alot of older games, so playing at 1600x12000 gives me the right balance of consistently high FPS and good rez on my hardware. Otherwise I get sick. 1920x1200 would be to slow. And a 16:10 screen is usually LCD. LCD's fixed resolution, ghosting, and lower contrast ratio are what prevent me from getting one. So I'll stick with my trusty old CRT for games. But for work, LCD's rock.
2. If you get very close to the screen, you will see pixelation. But at a normal viewing distance of 1-1.5 times screen width, it looks pretty damn amazing. And yes it's a sanyo PLV-70 pj with a Dalite Hipower screen with a 2.8 gain.
If you could only see Tony Hawk 3 at 1280x720, I'd make a true believer out of you. It's like looking at a 100" hidef plasma.:)
Hehe... never thought i'd get modded a flamebait. i've been +5 modded interesting or informative though...
1. montrous size - such a large screen is much more affordable than most would think. You can buy an Infocus X1 for $650 and get a great 60"-80" image at 800x600.
2. massive strength of the computer - I buy alot of games that are a year old or more. Been playing Max Payne 2, Unreal Tourn, Farcry, etc. They all play pretty damn well at 1600x1200. Any recent system should have no problems with such titles. especially with some cheap SLI cards.
3. The LCD TV is not that huge of a luxury. Given the cost of plasmas, I'd say they're a great bang for the buck for an HD display.
minimun HD 720 Progressive support from all titles. (I believe I read that somewhere...) And from seeing the incredible screenshots of various games at ign.com, I'm totally sold. 480P from current Xbox titles don't cut it for me on my HD displays, especially when I'm used to playing 1600x1200 on my pc at 60FPS.
Some games I'm looking forward to include DOA4, Tony Hawk, Forza, Project Gotham, etc.
Normally I wait before I buy console. I waited more than a year before I bought an xbox. But the Xbox360 has appeared to cross a critical threshold for me in graphics/HD capability that I can't wait for. I'm playing on a 105" (not a typo) screen with a native resolution of 1366x768, so I need all the resolution, polys, and graphical eye candy I can get. Even on my 32" LCD display, 480 just barely cuts it for me. A little hard on the eyes especially when I'm playing a game like Forza.
" I diasgree a little. I don't think someone can be held responsible for inaction."
It depends. If you are a lifeguard on duty and you let someone drown by "inaction", you will be held responsible.

agreed. I have NEVER experienced nausea from any 3d game, and I have played them all since Wolfenstein. (doom2 12 hours straight, quake, unreal, farcry, etc.) In fact, I have never gotten nauseous from any game. There is something very peculiar about Half Life 2 because I feel nauseous within an hour of playing everytime. I'm going to try playing with the refresh rate and see if that fixes things. But low refresh rates only give me eye strain and headaches... However I do get seasick easily. hmmm....
I need to buy a christmas ornament for a couple who work in the IT industry. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any good geeky christmas ornaments I can buy out there. gracias!
Ah. I thought you were correcting the editor who posted and summarized the article. Sounded like you were saying that the LCOS development was only being delayed.:)
you may need a newer/better DVD player. Don't expect cheap generic dvd players to be as robust as a newer sony/toshiba/panasonic player. Or perhaps your dvd player just needs a cleaning.
Sony will be coming out with a $10,000 LCOS based (SXRD) rear projection TV very soon. It will be from their Qualia line of products. it does native 1920x1080 HD and makes LCD/DLP pale in comparison.
And then there is the Qualia 004, which is their $30,000 Lcos based projector. I've seen this projector myself in action and can attest to the amazing image.
LCOS will be around simply because it is one of the best technologies, which is why Sony uses it in their most cutting edge line of products. Hopefully it will trickle down to normal consumers soon.

I bought the Shure's, but they become uncomfortable after sometime and they are pretty expensive so I don't use them any longer. I've been using the Sony Fontopia's for $30 which work awesome. Comfortable as hell. Nice soft rubber ear buds that go into your canal. Blocks out everything.
