Warren Buffett has a great way to deal with these things. A 100% short term capital gains tax! We can just start with the investment banks, hedge funds, etc.
Ever use the new cable? It's great. Can plug it in without looking at the device and worrying about breaking it. So simple, light, and sturdy. way better than micro USB. And I'm sure there technical merits (data transfer/voltage) to it that make it superior to USB.
Why force everyone onto a standard? In a truly free system, that would just stifle innovation.
Let them be free to make whatever they want, and you can be free to buy something else. In the end it will all work out.:)
Did you watch the video? It looks ridiculous whether it's in or out of context. A fat sweaty bald man trying to pathetically stir up the audience with an uninspired chant as you hear his voice weakly give out. The sweat stains alone.... gag. Complete dork. He's like the anti Steve Jobs. They were both assholes, but at least Steve had charisma and vision, neither of which Ballmer is in possession of.
Lemme guess. You probably have difficulty reading people and social situations. Or don't quite understand what makes something cool and often have jokes fly over your head.:)
Since I can't remember the quote I really wanted, I leave you with this:
"You should invest in a business that even a fool can run, because someday a fool will." - Warren Buffett
The solution then is to have such large companies align their motivations with the public's. (oil, nuclear, banking, anything too big to fail, etc.) More and more laws are coming out protecting the people with the money making these decisions. So I propose the following:
1. Unlimited financial liability to the corporations that cannot be protected by layers of "sub-contractors". 2. Unlimited personal financial liability to the executive management that cannot be protected by any form of insurance. 3. Mandatory prison terms for all executive management involved with corporate fraud. 4. Mandatory death sentence in cases where fraudulent mismanagement causes deaths. (Oil rig explosions, nuclear meltdowns, poisoned water supplies, etc.)
Simply put.. If you run a company that destroys the environment, you will pay for it. If you run a company that ends up killing people because of willful/fraudulent/criminal negligence, you will die for it.
I think we would see a healthy change in the way corporations operate if we made any attempt to better "motivate" management other than by pure profit and shielding them from responisbility.:)
That's what the BIill and Melinda Gates Foundation is. Warren Buffett invests and grows the money (in the case with Berkshire Hathaway Shares), and they get billions for as long as the company exists which is probably as close as forever as you may get. Blowing it all in shot would be pretty wasteful when considering the compounding returns over a long period.
Taking Buffett's billions (the greatest investor and philanthropist of all time), and giving it to some non profit investment group would be retarded.
"At the end of the day no matter how the handful of people like Bill Gates became so rich, neither their wealth nor their income holds a candle to what governments throw around on a daily basis"
Warren Buffett seems to think differently. And he has some numbers to back it up.
" The Forbes 400, the wealthiest individuals in America, hit a new group record for wealth this year: $1.7 trillion......A huge tail wind from tax cuts has pushed us along. In 1992, the tax paid by the 400 highest incomes in the United States (a different universe from the Forbes list) averaged 26.4 percent of adjusted gross income. In 2009, the most recent year reported, the rate was 19.9 percent. It’s nice to have friends in high places.
The group’s average income in 2009 was $202 million — which works out to a “wage” of $97,000 per hour, based on a 40-hour workweek. (I’m assuming they’re paid during lunch hours.) Yet more than a quarter of these ultrawealthy paid less than 15 percent of their take in combined federal income and payroll taxes. Half of this crew paid less than 20 percent. And — brace yourself — a few actually paid nothing.
This outrage points to the necessity for more than a simple revision in upper-end tax rates, though that’s the place to start. I support President Obama’s proposal to eliminate the Bush tax cuts for high-income taxpayers..."
It's not a shifter per se, but a stalk that you move up and down. It's no different from pressing a button and you'll see that to park the car actually requires a push of a button. Go drive one. I'm very aware that there's not much I could if that giant powerful machine stopped responding to my little pushes. Scary. At least on my motorcycle, I have a kill switch.
Forget about getting all technical about the clutch pedal/torque converter, the point is that it's silly re-engineer a pretty crucial piece of hardware when a simple kill switch will do. KISS. You also avoid ruining an engine, overheating, fires, etc. by just disengaging the tranny.
And hitting the kill switch will not seize the engine on a motorcycle at speed. Try and you will see. You would have learned this in a Motorcycle Safety Foundation class.
And switching down through all the gears on a motorcycle then popping up one to neutral can be tricky. Especially if you are having problems with the clutch cable, gear shifter, etc. which I have experienced in one form or another. This is precisely why the kill switch is crucial.
Hate to burst your bubble... but have you ever driven a newer car with a keyless ignition (eg: Mercedes S550)? You change gears by pressing a computer button, including into neutral. There is no mechanical gear shifter. Now imagine if the computer software that changes gears froze and didn't respond to the neutral button anymore. Scary isn't it?
Motorcycles have a mechanical kill switch. All newer computerized cars should have the same.
Having a clutch pedal as one user suggested doesn't help for automatic trans cars because they use a torque convertor. Not a clutch. And it would just be confusing for the average person. Kill switch is the way to go.
The truth is that the majority (90%) of jobs in a factory are *line workers* paid at or near minimum wage. And those jobs suck. That's what she may have been referring to, like taking a cashier job at McDonald's as a last resort. And a college degree would be a huge waste considering how expensive it is.
The problem is not that smart or dumb people are breeding. The problem is that unethical, selfish, and evil people exist. And the smarter they are, the more damage they potentially do. Look at Wall Street.
The parent is quite correct, and there is a confusion about the term grip. Traction control will help you here. Not 4WD.
Grip is really determined by a set of proper tires. A good set of winter/all-season tires on a two wheel drive car will outperform any set of sport or mediocre tires with 4WD in bad conditions. This is true for braking, accelerating, hydroplaning, etc. (2wd and 4wd drives brake the same. all 4 wheels will brake)
What will stop oversteering and other loss of control is a good traction control system like ESP in Benzes that will cut power and apply brakes to the wheels by determining your instantaneous speed, direction and yaw angle. To avoid hydroplaning, deep and specialized tread patterns are crucial so you need decent tires.
Bottom line, the quality of your tires will be the bottle neck. Have great tires in good condition. And drive safe.
Check out tire rack for a set that handle rain and snow well. I like the all season Contis and dedicated Blizzaks for the winter.
5.a. Create system restore points after major updates. MS Essentials will not save you from everything as I have learned from experience. Restoring to an earlier save point was a huge time saver vs restoring from a full backup.
That's great. Didn't know there were such things as sound proofed windows.
My idea was to use roxul acoustic fire batts (used to soundproof home theaters) and put them in some custom built cardboard boxes that fit snugly into the window areas to block off sound. Great for sleeping in since they block out light too.
Given this is slashdot, I'm surprised that there isn't a discussion of some basic high school physics of the kinematics involved. Kinetic Energy of a body with mass M moving at a given velocity V is:
KE=1/2MV^2
Now doubling your speed 30mph to 60mph or km/h will QUADRUPLE your energy, also quadrupling the energy needed to stop you (increase braking distance about 4x as well.)
Increasing speeds from 65 to 75 (a 15% increase) increases the KE by a 33%.
Here are some basic numbers. (sorry for the formatting) V % increase V^2 % increase 30 900 60 100.00% 3600 300.00% 65 8.33% 4225 17.36% 75 15.38% 5625 33.14% 85 13.33% 7225 28.44% 95 11.76% 9025 24.91% 105 10.53% 11025 22.16%
Regardless of driving culture/habits/training etc, there is clearly a greater risk the faster you go if things go wrong. Simple math. Calculating people's ignorance, arrogance, poor judgement, etc. is a bit more tricky. But it's better to err on the side of safety since our driving standards are so low, unlike in some other countries.

Changing the culture is not easy. There will always be smart and well financed greedy/selfish/evil people.
But bankrupting the companies and who run them is pretty easy. You can't do much damage if you're broke and/or in prison.
Actually, the best long term solution is a 100% short term capital gains tax. Credit goes to Warren Buffett.

Ever heard of trusts? Tax shelters? There is a whole industry devoted to getting around these laws.
Thanks for reminding me about Watson. Never saw that episode. Gotta love youtube...

LOL. Funniest and most concise comment ever. Thank you for that. Must be some kind of record.

Why do people here use VM's? Just for work? Just to test things?
agreed! now time to dl that app and head to the track! B)

I propose a new model called the Linus Model aka "This shit's complicated" Model. ;)
Mod him up. I just moved my computer upstairs and my heatsink came loose. It's one of those big zalman custom thingies.
*ducks* :)

A simpler way is to use sound reducing window curtains. Of course, the sound proofed windows would be the nicest solution.
Another idea is to move your bedroom to the interior of the apartment away from the streets since those noises are most annoying when sleeping.
And if that still doesn't work. Move. :)
