  1. No port to x86 for Apple on MacOS In A World w/ 2 Microsofts · · Score: 1

IBM's G3s will soon be running @ up to 700mhz. That alone will provide incentive for them to stick to PPC. And of course no one who proposes that rubbish that Apple WILL port to x86 has been able to explain the following very important areas for apple:

-How will Apple maintain backward compatability with PPC Mac software? It would be far too slow on the average PC to use emulation software to run say..... Photoshop, MS Office, etc.

-How will Apple keep its diehard users loyal? Most of them consider x86 to be pure trash

-How will Apple benefit from licensing MacOS X? Its main business is hardware. It won't be able to sell Macs and license off MacOS X without one way or another hurting itself.

  2. Great book though on The Battlefield Earth Contest · · Score: 1

I'm on page 800 I believe and it is really good. Typical hollywood fuck up. It's no wonder why the movie was terrible, from what I heard only a few things are the same. I haven't seen it but I know of at least these monumental discrepancies:

-humans hijacked psychlo war vehicles such as psychlo battleplanes; only human assault rifles were used, and only on psychlo infantry because bullets could break through the psychlo's glass plating on their breath-gas masks. In the movie the humans used harriers and stuff like that.

-the movie conveniently did not tell the audience that breathgas makes a nice little pop when hit by even the tiniest traces of uranium

-Jonnie never went to DC. He got his idea about rebellion once he started learning about the weaknesses of psychlo technology. Also the scots who faught alongside him were NOT uneducated barbarians the way that katz's description suggests. They were as educated in psychlo technology as jonnie (ie very educated)

-Terl WAS NOT the leader. He was the security chief and he got power beyond that position through blackmail.

-There was no conclusive evidence after the nuke went off to suggest that Psychlo was destroyed, rather quite the opposite!

I haven't seen the movie but if they actually had bothered to use the REAL Battlefield Earth storyline it would have been really good. Also if they did that then Brackish by Kittie would be a very good theme song; it fits the Psychlos very well.

  7. Libel laws are important on Criminal Libel, Free Speech And The Net · · Score: 1

People must be accountable for what they say, whether we like it or not. Sadly we cannot allow people going around making damaging remarks about people that they know aren't true. How would you like Jon if someone posted online that they "found out" that you raped some hot chick in high school? Libel wouldn't be very funny then I can guarantee.

The libel laws most certainly need to be gone over to check for compatability with online speech. In fact it is my opinion that most critical area where we need to regulate is to license reporters the way we do doctors and lawyers. A reporter who slants their stories too much, too often, commits libel and other violations of the spirit of freedom of the press needs to be punished. However in that case of course you must make a distinction between professional reporters and guys who run hobby news sites like I guess betanews.com (can't think of a better example). The last thing we want is general speech licensing. However we need a licensing system that holds professional reporters accountable for their libel/slander.

With that part of online libel the last part we need to look at are of course flames. Few in their right mind would take flames seriously, but what do we do if flames step over the line into clearly illegal speech like threats of physical violence? Frankly I think all of those pundits that liken the net to the wild wild west got it wrong. It's not like the wild wild west, more like the colonization of the new world; we're having to build a new society from the ground up, not just transfering an old culture to a new one.

  10. Software as a manufactured product on EBay Pulls MS Auctions, Neutralizes Complaints · · Score: 1

This issue I believe is symptomatic of the larger problem: packaged software is as much a manufactured good as a wrench or a hammer you buy a local hardware store. To allow companies to tell you how you can use it is as ridiculous as allowing Sears to force you to sign a contract saying you won't lend your power tools you just bought to your neighbor at the penalty of having Sears revoke your right to use them.

That also applies to movies and music. Once you buy the disk or whatever media it came on, it should be yours. Anything else is a violation of the consumers' property rights!

I haven't bought anything through ebay, but now they've sealed their fate with me, I won't buy anything through their network now!

  11. Corporate control--everywhere on What Will The Internet Of The Future Be Like? · · Score: 3

I predict that within 10 years we will have as much corporate control of the internet as the russians had government control of their lives during the soviet years.

I also predict that the real violations of rights will come from corporations, not the government as the government is often too clueless to be able to effectively handle technology. It will ultimately come down to libertarians (restrain the gov AND corps) vs the pseudo-libertarians (just restrain the gov).

My final prediction is that libertarians around the nation will begin seeing the publically traded megacorporation for what it is: a barrier to free market enterprise and an institution whose power must be limited just as the government's power must be limited. If we don't limit it then other companies cannot rise up and challenge it. God knows if teddy roosevelt hadn't done his famous trust busting we might have an industrial-aristocracy equivelent to the old European aristocracies.

It would seem like the internet should have been hailed as the greatest BLESSING ever by the recording industry. It gives the big labels the opportunity to cut prices almost in half and split the revenues 50/50 with the artist by cutting out the store from the equation. Add in ownership of the means of producing the cds by the lables and you get a golden opportunity for the recording industry. But then again I guess they are run by old foggies with the money to pay $17 for a popular cd.

It would seem to me that if that is the case they would appreciate people wanting to add Linux/BSD support for their modifed kerberos so that Win2k desktops could work on a network with Linux/BSD servers. Flexibility like that would sell more Win2k. The last thing they should want is people to go to another company because Win2k can't work with a non-Win2k server

  19. Re:Where's the other half of this story? on BeOS Boo-Boo: Violating The GPL -- Updated · · Score: 1

Considering the fact that Be actively maintains GPL'ed software for BeOS and releases the mods on their FTP server I am truly doubting Perens's claims. As far as I know all code is released on their FTP server because I've seen it numerous times listed on BeWare. He might be right, but to me this just sounds like another example of an open source zealot trying to bash a closed source vendor. Open source is flat out unprofitable for most software product types. Here's just a few such examples:
    MP3/Movie tools
Game engines. Can anyone honestly say that if Q3's engine was GPL'ed right now that anyone other than the Unreal team would make a new, innovative engine for the time being (as in until the release of ID's next engine).
Utilities like cd burning software. Most software can't be supported through tech support and such. That to me is the biggest flaw in the GPL. It doesn't allow small time developers to open up and make code. A better license would:
Allow the developer to sell binary only cds and such
Keep others from being able to sell versions of the software for a profit that haven't been heavily modified. You wouldn't want someone changing the corporate logo and selling their own rip off of your product
Allow closed source vendors to use the code in their products so long as they release the modifications. In other words don't make them release all of their new product's code, just the modifications they made to the open source code they borrowed.

All Be asked for was the specs to write the drivers, but nVidia wouldn't do even that! Because of nVidia's current stance many BeOS users are considering alternatives like the Voodoo4 or Matrox G400. I won't be buying a GeForce since I can't get a driver for BeOS, but 3dfx has already pledged support for Voodoo4 under BeOS so that's where I'm going when I start building my next PC.
