If we lived on them, then they would be "ours" too then wouldnt they. Besides that, there isnt really a whole lot to destroy. The surface of most of the celestial bodies in the solar system look like they were strip mined for the last billion years or so. There is no "environment" there to destroy, in fact we would be bringing an environment with us, and creating one where there was noe before, which might make up for the one were destroying down here.

  10. Re:GMO rice that increases herbicide sales on Stewart Brand on 'Environmental Heresies' · · Score: 2, Insightful

Did you miss the part of the article that said that this rice actually removes herbicide from the ground? Once your weeds are killed the rice sops up the excess and processes it into harmless chemicals. The rice had 20x less herbicide in it than conventional rice, plus the growing medium had nearly zero of the applied herbicide in it, while with conventional rice, the growing medium still contained 25% of the orginial herbicide. One of the main problems of irrigating otherwise fallow croplands is that evaporation leads to concentration of the residual herbicides and fertilizers that are applied to the ground. These run off into lakes and streams, further polluting the environment. If we can eliminate herbicide runoff from this, then we should be behind this wholehartedly, regardless of if it sells more herbicide or not.

So basically there is no danger from using black holes as a power source. Indeed, it would be quite a challenge to even do so. From the wikipedia article, the black hole would need to be fed ~10^5 kg of matter every second in order to maintain equilibrium, and would give off 10^21 Watts of power, or about 9 orders of magnitude more power than the entire human population uses now. Even containing that much power would be challenging, and if it got out of control, there wouldnt be any danger of the black hole eating the earth, but the detonation would probably kill most life on earth.

  20. Re:Good for the amoonsement park maybe... on Details On Inflatable Space Modules · · Score: 1

Ok, say you have a baloon, and you heat one side and cool the other (assuming the baloon doesnt pop) heres what happens. The air on the hot side gets hot and expands, increasing the pressure on that side. The air on the cool side contracts, decreasing the pressure. Thus a pressure gradient is created, and hot high pressure air moves to the cold low pressure side. The momentum of the hot air pushes the cold air, which moves towards the hot side where it is heated. As long as the air is free to move, circulation will keep the air from varying too much in temperature. Plus the baloon material provides some insulation so that the air cant transfer heat as efficiently. Vacuum is an awsome insulator. Make the outside of the capsule highly reflective and you can basically heat it with body heat and computers.

The reason they are doing this is because the DC metro is the second most utilized public transit system in the country (after NYC) When they system was originally designed in the 50's and 60's it was designed to be exxpandable to the point where you could fit 8 cars on a platform at a time, but no more. The stations are designed so that everythign is linear. There is one track in each direction, so trains cannot bypass stations (express trains) They are predicting that Metro will reach capacity on the Red and Green lines within 5 years. Once that happens, there is nothing that they can do, short of massive and expensive expansion. Raising parking fees is a good way to reduce the number of riders and increase the leeway they have with the capacity crunch.
