  1. Freedom from Privacy on The Eroded Self · · Score: 1
My question is, when does freedomstart to conflict with privacy. Example, Does the Government have a right to privacy? Do corporations? The same technologies that are conflicting with individuals privacy can arguably be said to be increasing freedom by allowing ordinary citizens to know things that Governments and corporations would very much like you to not know. The Monica Blewclinsky example is a perfect one. Individuals, like Monica, have a right to pricacy, But individuals Like clinton, are no longer Individuals, Clinton is the representative of the government, and therefore should have no privacy, for the good of the nation, or so the media would have us think. If Clinton couldnt keep a simple affair secret, whats going to happen when some future president needs to keep something important a secret? On the other hand, if that important thing could arguable harm the citizens of the US, it might be good if everyone knew about it. The point of having a president, or any leader for that matter, is so they can lead, and millions of people in the back seat driving dont let people lead. Its a conundrum regardless. Apparently they havent learned this lesson at the University Of Maryland, because there are two buildings, the student union, and the math building, in which there are doors with handles that you have to push, and bars that you have to pull. In fact, one door leading out you have to pull to open, which is a fire hazard ( doors always push out when leaving a building, to allow for the fastest exit). Despite the fact that all the doors are clearly labeled with words as to whether they pull or push, I always do the wrong thing because the handles are wrong, bad user interface.

As far as I can tell, the flat universe theory, states that the univeres will eventually reach a constant volume, thus the energy density will remain constant. Unfortunately thermodynamics states that eventually all this energy will be as low grade as possible, i.e. heat. So were all still doomed, or are we? Any thoughts?

I think youre missing the point entirely. What hes saying is that you happen to have an opinion, that guns suck, then dont own them. The whole reason we have a right to bear arms in the first place isnt so people can go off shoting each other, its so that we can go knock off congress if we as a people deem it to be necesary. The price fot that right is several thousand deaths a year. You can make the same argument about automobiles, or cigarettes, both kill lots of people, and at least in the case of automobiles, no one is trying to ban them. Guns serve a purpose too, if only to keep the government in line. Its hard to revolt if you dont have any weapons, Then you get cut down by machine gun fire very easily.

There's a lot more to ideas, writing, art, and music than money. If you choose not to share something, purely out of greed, then why should the resources of the public and the laws of the land be utilitized until the end of time to back up your greed? And even after you are dead and rotting, should your greed feed your grandchildren, at the cost of the public enforcing laws?

Theres a very simple solution to the whole copyright problem, simply have copyrights be free for the first 10 years, then 1000$ for the next 10, then 2000$ for the next ten, 4000$ for the next ten and so on. If youre really making tons of money off of something, then you should be able to pay for a good long time, plus the govenment gets money for enforcing the laws. And all we need is somone like Disney to try to keep Mickey Mouse ©(TM)® copyrighted for say 210 years, or 20 doubling periods, and its a billion dollars for another ten years of copyright enforcement. That starts to be some serious change in the govts pocket, granted, it takes 210 years, but maybe after the first ten doubling periods the doubling period changes to 1 year or 2 years or something. This is a more capitalist free market way towards copyright enfocement. Everybody wins. The govt makes money, copyrights that dont produce large amounts of cash become public domain automatically, and it allows giant corporations to keep their copyrights forever, as long as the copyright they hold is more profitable than allowing it to expire. Of course itll never pass, because right now Corporations get copyright enforcement for free, and screw everyone else, but hey, thats what revolutions are for

The only true creativity and originality these days is taking several ideas, modifying them slightly and synthesizing them into a new whole, with a dash of panache thrown in. This is exactly what apples done, and what theyve always done. Kudos to them. As to your comments about open source, the main advantage to open source is speedy security patches, and bug fixes, which have almost nothing to do with creativity.

This is completely wrong. yes, it is "red" in that its very redshifted towards the radio part of the spectrum. since its moving away from the earth, its light wavelength gets "stretched out" and redder depending on how fast its moving. Far away galaxies are moving away from the earth faster, so they are "redder" . If they were moving towards us their light would be shifted in the opposite direction and would be "bluer" since x-rays are way towards the "blue" end of the spectrum, this galaxy cannot be emitting light in the blue end of the spectrum, unless it were moving towards us at a fantastic rate, which in and of itself would be an important discovery. Secondly, since this galaxy was found using earth based telescopes, theres no way in hell it could be in the x-ray part of the spectrum, because the atmosphere acts like about 3 feet of lead to any x-rays trying to get through it. If you look at this season objectively, it has been very good, none of the episodes sucked, and none of them got too preachy ( like Ziggy, foul temptress) The simpsons still are just as funny as they were in the beginning, its just peoples expectations of how funny they should be have changed.
