Try this one. For several years I've used winxp and changed hardware and so forth and had no need to revalidate until two weeks ago. This is all on the same computer. Now I've had some problems and needed to reinstall. Three times and every time I not only need to validate it over and over but I must talk to the nice MS agent and beg him to OK my install. First it tells me I've installed the OS "TOO MANY TIMES" Then it tells me I've installed on another computer. Nothing they say applies to my situation, and they tell me they know my prod code is good. They don't know why it rejects me. They give me new install id and tell me they can't help me. If I need to reinstall I will have to do this again. That's just good ole MS, isn't it? I already have ubuntu 8.10 installed.

blame misplaced sometimes? If you are having this problem repeatedly try taking a good look at your MS OS. For example, do a diskcheck on Win(in my case XP). It found I had several orphan files hanging somewhere in outerspace that it took dskchk a couple of hours to clean out. After that I had no problem with grub booter. If you want an explanation for this, you must ask elsewhere. All I know is that sometimes I suspect MS of not playing nice, the same way it does when you want to run realplayer or other competing brands.

I live in Shanghai, China. You can figure it out. There is a discussion about the use of Linux somewhere on slashdot. I wanted to tell you all that I'm in the process of buying a Dell Inspiron portable computer. They offered me Vista and I said I didn't want it. I wanted Linux. They said, three days ago July 8, that there was a new law in China, Can't ship new computer with Linux on it. I insisted. The English speaker said, Don't why they have this law, it is not reasonable to me, but Icannotbreak it. I must follow my country's law. So I ended up with Vista. Thought this might be food for thought for everyone.

  13. Re:Sad. on Microsoft Cracking Down On Indian Retailers · · Score: 1

If it is so sad, why have I been laughing hilariously while reading all these naive postings. I've lived in China for 13 years and have bought four computers with windows systems. To make a long but interesting story shorter, I say that all have had illegal systems that "appeared" to be legal for the first several months. When I tried to get a legal English system all the Chinese laughed at me. But I persisted and three years ago I found a legal copy in Hangzhou and bought it. (I use Kubuntu for most of my daily work, but I still find a need to have winxp, for fun especially.) Recently I began having problems on a system in Shanghai, where I live most of the time, so I began looking for a legal/legal system, since it has things missing and has begun to behave erratically. That's not a stutter but a real life category for OS systems in China: legal/legal. It was a bit easier than in Hangzhou, but in a city of 20 million there was not even ONE winxp pro English legal system for sale. I had to wait for it to be shipped in from Beijing. About the same time my wife bought a computer for her university work with an chinese system winxp pro. I did my best to have her get a legal system. There really are advantages with some nice perks for having a legal copy. Contrary to popular opinion you cannot do everything on an illegal system. Microsoft has this thing about not letting you have some of their nice stuff at the site. We were told they didn't sell legal copies to mere end users; they only sold to the government and businesses. Who told us that? Why Microsoft of China of course. In China everyone is in collusion in this game. And the biggest abuser in my mind is Microsoft themselves. They do such a poor job of promoting their products here. You will play hell just trying to find them and will run up against a number of walls when you try to buy.

This doesn't make sense, and none of the very knowledgable explanations make sense either. I'm running open office on Kunbuntu Dapper x386(amd athlon 64bit) and OO works really well. Yet Koffice works better, especially in the usb functions. Of course it doesn't do curly quotes, but go figure. So use koffice if it works so well. You can spend days figuring these kinds of things and still not have an answer. I switched to i386 because amd is dual compatible(or whatever it's officially called) and now things are cooking pretty good. I was told the speed would not be good with non 64 bit system, but I think there is little or no difference for most things. Stay away from 64 OS unless you want to play with it or are masochistic.

In fact, anyone who wants to try Linux needs to have a willingness to learn something NEW. Currently I'm on the verge of going full time Linux, but it has not been easy and it has taken considerable time. I still don't know how to make my printer work without drivers from unconscious manufacturer. Yet, it seems I can do virtually everything else. I still have a lot to learn about how to get around in Linux but there is help available. And it grows on you, to get for example the MSN video to work in Linux.
