I think number one thing that gets people modded into the gutter is misstatement of opinions as facts. They don't say, "I disagree because..." or "I think...", they say "you are wrong", which is very common in politics and incites flamewars and partisanship. It shows either a lack of humbleness and respect for others opinions or an inability to distinguish opinions from facts. It may fly in debate realms where emotion trumps logic like politics, but logic and reason triumph on this site.

Note that this isn't directed at you, its just my observations on the moderation habits of slashdot.

I disagree. There is a true dichotomy present - a unified experience comes at the cost of options. In a perfect world this may not be true, but the world isn't perfect. Android phones are selling so well because it caters to the latter, which includes the majority of users. The Eris was a perfect fit for my mother and two friends because it was small, cheap, cute, and fit their light usage needs. The droid was right for me because of customizability and the full keyboard. The Evo was best for another friend because of a Sprint company discount and local Sprint coverage. This is a result of Google focusing its efforts on the modular facets of the OS, and the carrier adoption of the OS is also a result of this focus. These things are not possible if you only have one device that only works on one network with draconian restrictions to OS usage.

This is almost identical to the desktop wars in the 90's that put Apple in the gutter. I highly doubt Apple doesn't see where this is going because they have experienced it before. However, unlike before, Apple knows how to profit in its niche. Expect them to remain a competitor as a profitable solutions company, not as a market leader.

The world revolves around them and they are not paying attention to what they are supposed to be doing, or their surroundings, or their state of mind. I would not doubt for a minute that these people would rely entirely on the technology to tell them something they should already know, and drive in a dangerous condition prior to the alarm going off.

  11. P2P or Dedicated servers? on Valve Announces Dota 2 · · Score: 1

That is a very important question. Heroes of Newerth did some really cool things that can't be matched by typical RTS P2P play. First and foremost, its impossible to maphack because the netcode doesn't send information for units in fog of war, that information residing only on the server. You'd have to hack their servers to gain that exploit. They also have a reconnect feature where, say, if your comp restarts and you log back in, you are prompted to rejoin the game. These alone make it a much better experience than DotA. The only thing DotA 2 seems to have going for it over HoN is AI and coaching system (which is admittedly needed because the game has a very steep learning curve). LoL has the in-game rewards part covered.

My uncle checks forum questions for his business on the go all the time, because hes not big enough to staff it yet. I use it to check on things on break at work that I'd rather not have on in my work internet history for privacy reasons. Its worth the money to all three of us.

With regards to cost, yeah, we all know its outrageous and hope that some day a big antitrust suit slaps this crap down. They can't get away with it forever as the public is becoming increasingly hostile towards both ISPs and wireless carriers. Hopefully we'll see some change soon.

I recall someone modding the game to run all the graphics through the CPU rather than GPU to avoid this issue.
