So your show is on CBS and then the TV station in France wants to air it. CBS isn't competing in France, so they don't much care if the station in France has the same show. CBS only really cares that they have it exclusive in the United States. So that's the way contracts are written, TV networks buy exclusive rights in their country. That goes along fine for 90 years.
Except in older times didn't work like this.

Beacuse UHF waves don't follow national borders, you were able to pick a French TV show in Tuscany and some part of Northern Italy and the opposite happened in France. Dual standard colour TV were easily available on both countries. I could also remember the use of low VHF television channels on west Germany and Italy to broadcast to eastern bloc countries, and now the Genrmay's state TV transmits unencrypted via satellite on all Europe.

reliability: some ham radios are built like a tank, because were designed to be used in a tank
almost standardized power suppy permits to power the radio with flexibility even with a bunch of D cells or a lead-acid battery
mesh networking: no central control system: all communications are set up freely an could reconfigure on the fly

I could use an operative leasing and at the end of the leasing period refuse to pay the release fee and leave the old car at the leasing company. Or I could go to car rental services like Avis or Hetz. Or I could use newer rental services like Car2Go.
Finally I could decide to use a Taxi.
I suppose that self driving cars will be almost rented in a taxi like service or with a long time rent because of civili liabilities. Actually I take every workday a sef driving metro train.

Personally I think that those powerful interest group had been nurtured by the broadcasters that bended over their requests. The problem for national public broadcaster could be an harmonized European TV licensing covering all national broadcasters.
The world should introduce trade-sanctions against the USA and the UK, until they stop attacking other countries, and fall in line.
Naturally, it's advisable to don't sign commercial treaties with USA and UK, that are tre inverse of trade sanctions. I think governments must abandon TTIP and TPP at their destiny.
