  1. Not just Walmart on Hundreds of Walmart Employees Say They've Been Punished For Taking Sick Days (vice.com) · · Score: 5, Informative

I honestly thought this was more normal. I'm not saying it's right. However, I've worked at a software company that had a points-based attendance policy and they actually denied me a raise one year because I called off for illness a few times. It was the worst kind of phone support job and I was a lot younger but I didn't think this was unusual. I definitely thought it was unethical, though. Also stupid, as it encouraged sick people to come in and get everyone else sick, which happened all the time.

  2. Comics, radio drama, role playing, etc. on Slashdot Asks: Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why? · · Score: 2

I've had to pare down my podcast listening since I don't drive as much as I used to and usually don't get into listening at home. I have a few categories that I listen to a couple of podcasts each in. These should all be easily found in any podcast directory.
    Comics:
    War Rocket Ajax
Jay and Miles X-plain the X-Men
I also used to listen to Life Leave Me Alone but their feed address changed and I haven't gotten around to catching back up yet.

    Drama:
    Welcome to Night Vale
    Thrilling Adventure Hour

    Role Playing:
Campaign (Getting into this last year is the reason I'm behind on everything else except for WRA and Jay and Miles)
    One-shot
Adventure Zone (just starting this one, seems good and I hear it gets better)

Making (I'm way behind on both of these, hopefully they're still updating):
    Making It
    Darbin Orvar

Misc: My Brother, My Brother, and Me

I have to wonder why Slashdot ran that submission from an anonymous coward (sorry, reader). The Wired article Timothy mentioned in passing looks like it has a stronger grasp on reality but that submission is what people will actually read. Do we need to start moderating the editors or as the GG/Puppies contingent gotten so strong here that it's a lost cause?

  6. Mixed results with ex-military coworkers on Why Military Personnel Make the Best IT Pros · · Score: 1

I've had mixed results with this. I have worked with several Marines in the past and all were decent as basic techs. Most of them went into management or non-technical areas in IT and another quit to become a cop. One of my current coworkers was a Navy tech and she is pretty darn good as well. On the other hand, I've worked with two people who came from IT in the Air Force and they are two of the worst techs I have worked with, unable to keep composure under the slightest amount of pressure. I've wondered if that is a result of that branch's culture.

  7. Moore expected the rights back long ago on DC Comics Announces "Before Watchmen" · · Score: 4, Interesting

To everyone who sees nothing wrong with this, please remember the DC was supposed to return the rights to Watchmen back to Moore when the collection went out of print. Moore was the victim of the story's popularity, though, as it was one of the first graphic novels to sell enough to remain in print for a long time. I imaging Warner and DC have no intention of allowing it to be out of print at all now, following the letter of the contact but violating the spirit of the agreement.

Speaking as someone who worked for Borders for several years and continued to have my store be a big part of my life, any good Borders employee would be happy to read your story. We never minded anyone reading stacks of books, even taking notes, as long as they put their own books away. If they'd gone on providing the selection and taking care of the needs of customers like you, they wouldn't be in this situation and costing several of my friends their jobs. Thank you for sharing. Your story actually made me happier today.

RPM has deeper problems than that. There have been a few times that I have had to back up the /var/lib/rpm directory, restore the packagelist file, and rebuild the database after RPM stopped responding entirely. The database would not budge when I tried rebuilding it otherwise. I think I actually let it attempt to rebuild for a day once. Nasty. And that was on a recent version of Fedora.

Interesting take on the subject. Have you actually watched enough to make a decision based on the content and not the premise? Actually, Sarah Michelle Gellar canned it. The fate of the series has been in question for months now because she was the only cast member who hadn't determined if she was coming back or not. It seems she sees more importance in Scooby Doo (in which no actor's career is furthered other than the ever-annoying Matthew Lillard).

P.S.- I'm not sure, but I don't think she was directly involved in the Futurama decision. ;-)

  23. Sarah Michelle Gellar's movie career on Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Officially Over · · Score: 2, Insightful

She's killing Buffy so she can make more Scooby Doo movies? This season doesn't feel like it's the end of the story. It's too soon to call it quits. Besides, look at the movies that SMG has made. They're all crap. She clearly should not be allowed on film, unless (maybe) it's a Buffy movie. Note that she said "in this incarnation" (though she could have been referring to the comics. Oh, well. I blame Prinze for this. And cancer.

  24. Travolta in dreadlocks on Battlefield Earth · · Score: 1

That's big thing to jump out at me. This is definitely a big makeup-and-effects type of movie. In this month's issue of Science Fiction Age (the last one, btw - not the best SF mag out there, but it was dependable), Travolta described the film as "like Pulp Fiction in the year 3000." Right. As to how they're fitting the thousand page book into a single movie, they just filmed the first 500 pages for this, the next 500 will be made into a sequel. This assumes anybody actually goes to see the first one, of course.

"Shell" has a much different meaning here than it usually does in Unix. Litestep and its competitors (Geoshell, EVWM, Darkstep, etc.), as well as the Windows Explorer, are more like the "desktop shell" the the Enlightenment guys are talking about. So we're not dealing with CLI shells, but alternative GUIs for Win32 platforms, mostly inspired by different window managers for X.
