It was in the 80's: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1282/is_v39/ai_5114777

TOSHIBA MACHINE Company sold propeller machines to the Soviet Union for two years (1982 to 1984), allowing the Russians to build super-quiet, nearly undetectable submarines. Experts say the U.S. will now have to shell out $40 billion to upgrade its own submarines to a state of noiselessness that will maintain the prior American advantage. In addition, Toshiba lied about the sale so as not to alert the Japanese government.

  7. Re:One drop of blood on Best Presidential Candidate, Democrats · · Score: 0

Secondly, Obama is not black, in the American sense of the term. In the USA, "black" refers to the subset of Americans who descended from slaves and share cultural roots. American citizens who have African ancestry but do not come from this slavery-originated black culture are properly referred to as "African-American." This is utter nonsense. Ever heard of "one drop of blood"?

Let's split hairs here. Names ending with -evich are not traditional proper Russian names. Most likely his ethnicity is Byelorussian. There is a difference - look up the Belarus. Ironically, that country president's name: Lukashenko is not Byelarussian but Ukrainian. Generally, in modern Russia what is considered "Russian" is often an intermix of many nationalities that populated the Empire. Just like anywhere, those truly Russian are the ones who consider themselves Russian.

Well, I was in Kiev(65 miles from Chernobyl) at the time. My father was in the civil defense at his factory, so he measured radiation levels in the beginning of May, 1986. The levels were about 2-5 times above normal. Higher levels were registered near pools of water. All in all it was no big deal, the main danger was radioactive Cesium and Strontium absorption in the body. This was counteracted by Iodine supplements given mainly to children. Granted, Kiev(a city of 2.8 mln people) was spared by the North-Western winds during the critical period of first 3 days after the event. I remember that my father had one of those personal dosimeters, he left it at home with us. I though it was broken because it was steadily showing "0" on the scale. My dad said:"If this thing starts showing anything we should all run like hell." Just as a precaution children were sent out of the city starting in May and through the summer of '86.
