You are misinformed. The tower and your phone have to know the distance from eachother because your phone has to know when to start sending a packet to fill its designated timeslot and not end up in the timeslot of another user. It is all about timing, and there is a handshake between tower and handset based on roundtriptime. The path length can vary quite a bit due to reflections. GSM technology is pretty interesting.

Ok, true, but then one misses the tree view. So, it is still not possible to just hide the favourites.
Which annoys me enough to let me use UltraExplorer instead of MS Windows Expliorer.

In explorer, I can open the favorites in the left-hand pane by clicking the "favorites" button -- but there is no way to KEEP it permanently open. I have to click the favorites button every. single. time.
They changed that in Vista: now you can't get rid of the favourites pane at all, even if you want to.

Open and save dialogs are at the mercy of the application, I guess, nothing changed there.
But in Vistas' Explorer, when you slow-double click or F2 to rename, the extension isn't hightlighted. Nice indeed.

    And:

You may like yEd. Not OSS, but free (the last time i saw it). Not exactly the same as Visio, but very nice for some types of diagrams. It does a nice auto-reformatting/layout job, and is very flexible doing so.

yEd imports/exports from/to a few other formats, for example GML. GML is not very difficult to generate (for simple diagrams).
