Very true I hate to admit. If there is not hardware or a service to sell then selling the program and giving away the source just will not work together. I can not tell you how I hate to admit that.

Along with that is the fact that "You will never know what you refuse to understand" Also one of my quotes. It is a vicious and expensive circle for those that are content with ignorance.

It is a Microsoft-World war. In case you haven't noticed over the last 20 years or so MS has attacked anyone that they felt would take even .01% of what they consider to be revenue that belongs to them. They don't believe in competition of any kind. The GPL is the only challenge to the MS monopoly that has a snowballs chance in hell to make a dent in it. Over the years I may have met one or two Unix bigots that were trying to eliminate any MS software running in the company but I have met dozens of MS cult drones that reject anything that does not have the MS stamp of approval on it. Most of these drones have zero understanding of architecture and infrastructure and why MS is not always one size fits all. Freedom is divine. Its what is best for everyone. and yes I do have ADD. You couldn't tell from my posts? Yep FOSS is the only thing that so far has put up a real fight. There is not a single proprietary company anywhere that can begin to be a threat.

GPLv3 is a key event in Microsoft's war to divide and conquer the Free Software / Open Source community. Most of the Linux industry seems to be betting on GPLv3 to put an end to Microsoft's patent claims. My question is simply: is Microsoft sitting around scratching its head, or has it already started on the next level of play...? Are we going to see those 235 patents handed over to the community, or are we instead going to see "IP Bridges" as the next great Product to come out of Redmond?
I can not imagine an IP bridge that MS would want under GPLv3. In fact before we talk about what they want to do about their claims, lets wait an see what the are going to do about their patents being spread out to the broader community and these SLES coupons not having any end date. As for what they are doing now. I am seeing reports about a Xandros and MS deal on eWeek.com but the link is dead so far. It seems either it is not a real event or eWeek is borked as normal.

Gpl3 is divisive, but correct in this case. Companies like Tivo benefit from the OSS model of tinker/hack/remake and still restrict users in doing the same. The same privileges that are extended to end users with the source code should be established with the freedom to tinker.

If Tivo feels that DRM is worth more than continued use of GPL software, so be it. Well said. I love that last comment. This issue has been hot for a while. So I just pulled a comment that I had written on my Frapper some time ago. Yes I know that anything connected with Google is not FREE but I do not maintain a real blog to this just works for me. The point of freesoftware The technology in freesoftware, the companies that support its growth and build on it and even its users are all tools. Novell has forgotten this, simple fact. The principle difference between open source and freesoftware is that in open source all of the rights to use it with out restriction are not protected. The GPL puts no limits on the cost of software production, packaging or distribution. To brake this down a little: 1. The point of freesoftware is not so people can get a program with out cost. 2. The point of freesoftware is not to make it popular. 3. The point of freesoftware is not to make great technology. 4. The point of freesoftware is not to make rich CEO's even more rich. The point is to free the user of the tyranny of monopolistic situations and doing so primarily in the digital space. Some or all of the non-points listed must take place at some point in time for real freedom to come to said users, clearly that is true. Novell has been in the past a tool for that very cause. That may not be so in the future. I have even told them these very things. I also look forward to telling them again in person at the Ohio Linux Fest. Um well um that would refer to GNU+Linux of course. Maybe there will be some talk of GNU+Hurd there as well. Then I guess you can not really consider such and event specific to GNU+Linux. Call me a Stallmanite. I do not care. You know I am right. The software that some of you are such fans of would not even exist if it were not for this most simple, most important, most forgotten, fact. Novel has forgotten this and Tivo has clearly never bothered to understand it.

Linus says that if people do not like Tivo then they will use something else. That for some or most on this board is true with MITH. However for most people using Tivo or the Tivo like device which they got from their provider is their only option and if they do not like it they can switch to another provider that has the same bigbrother techniches that Tivo has. What is more we all know that these are just PC's yet if one tries to drop in a bigger hardrive then they also will need to hack the BIOS with some sort of program work around. This is not freedom and as you said Linus just does not get it. I say sure GPLv2 is just fine and Tivo is the best thing sense we found out we were being watched for everything we do.
