    And when it's hot enough, there's not much difference anymore between C and K.
    So why not use C or K?

    Government-free energy implies more coal power plants.
    Few energy companies are interested in multi-billions long term investments in energy efficiency & renewables.
    The path of least resistance is coal, which also happens to be the dirtiest solution.

    I suppose the thermal energy contained in you water vapor far outweighs its gravitational potential energy.

    What you can do is get the latent heat and some sensible heat back by condensing it, and deliver this energy to some district heating system.

    You know your efficiency figures are wrong and meaningless, right?
    Where the hell did you get that 3% figure??? Last time I checked, it was more about 40% for combustion engines.

    Plus, you'll have to multiply your 50-80% by the efficiency of a power plant, between 30 and 60%.

    Instead of questioning ourselves on our energy consumption, we just hope that tomorrow will bring new photovoltaic modules with 12000% efficiency.
    Instead of questioning ourselves on the fact that we eat too much meat and fish, we keep on depleting fish resources around the world, while some Japanese (incidentally, the biggest tuna consumers & fishers) scientists might come with a super-tuna "next decade or so".
    Problem is, it might already be too late.

    It is high time we learned to take some responsibilities and stop relying on dubious techno-science stuff.

    Sure, it's not the same price point, but the 5D2 just beats the crap out of the GH1 for anything that should look professional.
    Take a look at Reverie (TFV), and tell me if it would have been possible with GH1's sensor size.

    No impact whatsoever on wind. Any more question?
    Problems of wind turbines :
    - they have some visual impact (more than PV, less than some roads, bridges or towers)
    - they usually are far away from where electricity is needed
    - they kill some birds (much less than cars, more than PV)

    Now, get off my lawn, and if you really need to worry about something, you'd better think about water shortages, pesticide poisoning or global warming.

    Careful there, you're mixing energy (kWh) and power (hp).
    30kWh is approximately 40.2hp *during an hour*

    Granted, TFA and TFS didn't realize either that mentioning an energy without a time span is basically useless.
    A nuke can produce 30kWh (in 50ms), so can my bicycle (in a month).

    As mentioned in other posts, to produce 30kWh with 10% efficiency, they "just" need to steal 30l of oil during an unspecified amount of time.

    Interesting post.
    But the fact is that *every* energy source has its environmental drawbacks, and the related problems are directly proportional to our consumption.

    No whiny enviro needed to realize it, just a good book about physics and thermodynamics.
    Take a look at "Three Gorges Dam" for an example of a clean and renewable source gone wrong.
    Geothermal experiments in Basel (CH) led to a 3.4 earthquake. No biggie, but not completely problem free.
    The list goes on and on, for fossil fuels, nukes, solar and wind power....

    The conclusion is that the best energy is measured in Negawatt.hours, that we should use renewable energies as much as possible, and cover what's left with nukes.
    But we'll reach peak oil and get climate related problems well before fusion gets into production, so this technology is totally irrelevant for the problems we have to cope with.

    Introducing bigger cars into the market is a zero sum game for car safety, and a net safety loss for pedestrians.
    This car would be safe enough without all those SUV's.

    Time will tell, but as soon as oil prices are high enough, those kind of car will become a necessity, while SUV's will have to stay parked.

    Anyway, I spent more than a third of my life living abroad (in Europe). I speak 5 languages, but would never describe myself as European first.
    Neither would any of the hundreds of people I met.
    Right off my ass, I would say that less than 0.01% Europeans would describe themselves as Europeans first.

    The cultural gradient is so much bigger in Europe than in the US, it's pointless to try to compare both on a common ground.
    It might come one day, but we're not there yet.
