I'm sure this is good for somebody but my 11mb wireless lan is already 11 times faster than my net connection. Locally, I rarely every transfer large files between machines.
It seems to be that good 'ol 802.11b is still the price/performance leader. And with a range of only 20 feet, I can't see much use for 802.11a in my house.
Maybe when cards that support both 802.11a and 802.11b are cheap enough I'll start buying those. That's what it took for 100 mbs lans to take over, that's probably what it will take for 54 mbs wlan to take over the marketplace.
Does the word processor have an automated way to build a table of contents? That's the only advanced feature I use is MS Word and I can't switch without it.
Aside from that, I don't see a high "cost" in moving from word to Open Office. (I don't really use the rest of the suite)
Lets see-- just over 10 people per day die in automobile crashes... After a concerted effort, 1 man dies of Anthrax and several are treated...
These terrorists are playing on irrational fears.
I agree with you. However, the tone of your post (let's see) implies that you are proving me wrong. Is that what you're doing? If so, did you read my post?
the whole point of Linux is to be able use whatever old, junk hardware you can scrounge.
Not for me, I like Linux. It was my favorite *nix until Mac OS X.1 (10.1) came out. Solaris doesn't have a nice UI and for a desktop, that's important (to me).
Anyway, I bet you'd like Linux more on a nice piece of hardware.
Ok, I knew of all three but the "experts" haven't linked up the FL case with the NYC and Reno cases. Also, they haven't said, AFAIK, that the FL anthrax arrived via mail.
That's why I was calling it two. However, I can see why three is correct also.
Not one case, two cases. I'm with you, snal mail isn't going anywhere. If it does lighten up it won't be because of Anthrax. However, I expect more the number of attacks will go above two.
I don't enjoy shopping, at least not for most things (I like shopping for my salt water fish tank). I still buy things online and I would never go to a flea market. My dog food is delivered to my door because it's too heavy for my wife to buy in bulk.
IMHO, it's not a fad, it's just not for everybody.
I was just looking at these things the other day. I'm really thinking about buying one. When I saw his review I thought, "Cool, at last some news for nerds."
According to me,/. has focused too much on privacy and politics. They are important but I need a little more UI debates, geek toys, etc.
What you see as a blatant plug I saw as a nice change of pace. Anyway, I liked his choice topics.
I can't agree with you. I have a nice stereo in my living room sitting in my entertainment center. Putting an older P90 in there just isn't an option. This is perfect for me except I wish it had it's own storage. All I have is laptops in my house so I don't have a nice always on server to keep my files on. This is close, I just need an option that holds a hard drive.
I really want one of these and Christmas is coming. However, since going wireles all I have are notebooks with 802.11b around the house. In a perfect world I would also get a little network storage device that I can use to hold my pictures, music, etc.
Has anybody seen anything like this for under $500?
I have an iBook and my experience was pretty much the same as yours. I started to doubt whether or not I made a good decision when I bought it.
I'm not a long time mac fan but I'm being won over. 10.1 is much faster. The difference is huge. You might have a different opinion if you had waited a little longer. Now I have a beautiful unix machine for a decent price. Even my wife likes this thing.
I think their plan is pretty close to what you're calling for. This is how I would sum it up:
1. Attack, remove current bad element.
2. Occupy. Keep the area safe.
3. Pour in humanitarian aid. Help them recover and get them to like us.
4. Leave them with a stable economy and as an ally of the western world.
Now surely it's more complicated than that. Also, the chances of success might be slim. However, it seems like a good plan to me. I can't think of anything better. Wish us luck.
I'm still not convinced. Computers are good at some tasks and they are terrible at others.
If I gave you a 100 page document and told you that I have to commas next to each other you would be hard pressed (as a human) to find the problem.
If I gave a computer ten pictures and asked it which one was me it would be hard pressed to find a match. Humans can tell if somebody is good looking is.1 seconds. Computers are nowhere near as good with pictures.
When I heard that current technology was easily defeated that matched up with everything I learned in school (graduated in '98). People have been working to make computers identify pictures for a long time. We're just not there yet.
Finally, the idea that terriosts won't use simply costumes seems incorrect to me. They use fake ids, they keep low profiles, etc. It's probably a poor practice to count on the idea that they are too dumb to wear an ear ring and a beard.
Uhhh... you don't *work* in the embedded market, do you?
I don't work in that market either but I wonder if it looks bigger to you because you're close to it?
Phones = these don't need transmeta chips
tvs = these don't need transmeta chips
set top boxes = don't have one
microwave ovens = doesn't need good chip, small market
vcrs/dvds = doesn't need good chip, small market
stereo equipment = small market
Some of these markets are small because the equipment lasts for 15 years. (Stereo equipment, microwave ovens, etc.) I can't help but think that as they move to embedded systems they have decided to stop trying be cutting edge in favor of moving to cheap systems in an attempt to stay alive.
It's too bad (according to me) because the competition was moving the whole chip business forward.
1. When I went to school in at night in Philly (Drexel U) getting mugged was a real possibility. I just stopped using cash.
2. I'm cheap. Now that I have a real job I go out to lunch almost everyday. With a credit card I can tip the 15% - 20% that I want. With cash I usually start at 15% - 20% and then take it to an even dollar amount. In time, that extra money adds up.
There is already a lawsuit out there over this. IANAL but I would guess all they have to do is disclose that it can't be copied on the box and they are covered. If it's labeled and you still buy it then you know what you're buying.
Still, I hope this stuff gets cracked soon. I actually believe that people buy more CDs when they get the MP3 first. That's certainly true for me.
I've been using my Palm Vx for over a year now. I've been using Palm Pilots for about four years. I like them but I think I've bought my last Palm.
Next, I get to thinking about the Linux alternative. I like Linux, I've been using it for years, so I want to give it the benefit of the doubt. However, it has non-rechargable batteries, and they actually advertise "paint" and "CPU Speed" on their list of applications. For me, buying this would be purely an act of Linux patriotism. Perhaps a worthy idea but I don't have the extra cash for that.
These are exactly the sort of things that I would love to add to a PDA. I can surf the web and read word docs from anywhere in my house, yard, or office. I guess asking for it to be small, have a rechargable battery that lasts a week, and to include a cell phone would be too much. Still, it seem like MS is going to own this market whether I like it or not. The good news is that the seem to be doing it by building the best products (according to me).

Insightful? C'mon, you're best guess is that a good 'ole boy attacked a supermarket tabloid, Nightline News, and Microsoft?
Here's the MSFT link in case you haven't seen it.
I know we need to be fair but let's be honest, we have a prime suspect.
You haven't seen this?
They said their name is "not so cool".
I seen several people say there was only one case of Anthrax sent via mail. It's not one, it's two.

BTW, I doubt snail mail is going anywhere.

I read one that said it looked like there was spot inside for a hard drive. Perhaps a guess about their next system?

You're not fuuny. That joke is tired and old. Please work harder on your posts.

I read Bruce S's piece. Everybody should read it. I wonder if their is any hope of the US gov. hiring him as a consultant?
I don't work in that market either but I wonder if it looks bigger to you because you're close to it?

I don't use cash for two reasons:
1. When I went to school in at night in Philly (Drexel U) getting mugged was a real possibility. I just stopped using cash.

Now I'm far from a Micro$oft lover but look at what they are doing.
- 802.11b
- VPN access
- video playback
