One of the things that I see missing in the history, though, is that Microsoft wasn't finishing their parts of OS/2 during the IBM-Microsoft OS/2 era,...
I was one of the hundreds of OS/2 developers at IBM. I can tell you this, at the top of every source module for OS/2, there was this statement "Copyright 1987, Microsoft Corporation."
Yes, MS wrote OS/2 - except for the networking layer and the installation programs - the worst parts of OS/2. When I mentioned that the worst parts of OS/2 were written by IBM, I got may ass chewed out royally!!!
My point? IBM dropped the ball on OS/2. Period. Their management decided that the company's resources would be best spent on developing their software on Wondows.
FTFA: Once you've merged Switch User and Lock, do you really need Log Off? The only thing Log Off gets you is that it exits all running programs.
I have multiple user accounts on this machine that I'm on now. One for my wife, one for me, and the admin account. Having different user accounts makes it much easier for keeping our documents, mail, and other progams that we use separate. It makes both of our lives easier if all she has to do is logon into her account and her email and other stuff is right there without having to dig around my shit.
And, thanks to/. users for posting the importance of having user accounts for general use, this machine hasn't had any viruses in a couple of years.

definition of Geek: is an individual who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination, usually electronic or virtual in nature. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd.
I understand how the scientists on the list made it, but Paris Hilton, Lisa Simpson, Mary Shelly, and Daryl Hannah?
I grew up in a really religious household. I am now agnostic and a huge fan of Eastern thought. I know of a few other folks who have a similar background and think Creationism and Religion in general as being just utter crap.
So, if you're worried about this promoting Creationism, don't. The folks going there are already converted and if anything, it may get them thinking and questioning their own beleifs.
And as long there isn't any police showing up at my door to force me to church or to tax me for not going to church, I'm going to worry about more important things.
For my fellow Americans -Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
FTFA (bold mine): A recent study by the Department of Education found that 31 percent of American students were dropping out or failing to graduate in the nation's largest 100 public school districts.
It doesn't say the national average or any other meaningful statistics. It's just those 100 schools.
The other thing is that I hated High School as much as any of those kids interviewed. I prefered ditching and programming my Apple II at home and subsequently learning math by discovery - NOT boring lectures. But, when I skipped, my parents rode me very very hard about it. There was this family value regarding education - we must have it.
Yeah, it sounded like those kids in TFA had parents that valued education, but if this "trend" in dropouts is in these 100 schools, then I have to point the fingers at their peers. Just about all of my peers had intentions to go to college and on to some sort of grad school (just about everybody wanted a BSME, BSEE, MS**, JD or MD). So, I had a lot of peer pressure to graduate and go to college. That's just me.
"The cameras will act as an excellent deterrent for any youngsters who are intent on causing trouble.
I can't find anywhere that mentions if the cops have the ability to turn it off or not. I would be very skeptical of any police video that has been "edited" (turning the camera off at certain moments) by the police officer in question.
An example of what I mean: A cop gets called "pig" (the UK version), cop turns off video, kicks the crap out of kid, turns video back on, and then says "I was attacked! You saw him trying to provoke me!" Or whatever, you guys get the idea.
game where I do the moves (gloves and boots that sense when I'm punching and kicking!), I would buy that in a heartbeat! It would be an awesome workout!!!
Think about it. Or have something like Worf's workout from ST:NG! That be sooo cool!
Yeah, I've used those exercise bikes with the screen - it shows you racing with others. It's ok.
Here's an example - background and drug checks. I'm not going to go into the reasons, but black folks as a percentage of population are incarcerated more than the general population, many because of (quite minor) drug related offenses. Don't want black folks working for you, have a stringent background check and drug testing. You'll get rid of more (as a percentage) black candidates than white.
Don't want to rent to black/spanish/white folks, someone with a black/spanish/wasp sounding name calls, tell them the apartment was just rented, or, when they come, just make the place look like shit or play really LOUD MUSIC.
I'm sure we all can think of ways to do it. But my point is try, just try and prove they're acting in a discriminating manner. If someone really doesn't want you there, they'll figure out a way. And yes, I agree with you, my life would be quite miserable in that situation so I'd rather they just say, "I don't want (insert group here) living here."
Now, I guess maybe laws are needed if it was really endemic throughout an area - like 1960s and earlier. But these says, I have never witnessed racism in the workplace (27 years in workdforce) or with housing. I am not saying it doesn't exist, I am just saying it's rare. And if someone is that much of a bigot, let him wallow around and miss out on opportunities because of it: his loss. There are plenty of other opportunites for folks these days.
...i walk down there to do my stuff and meet girls who are there spectating
They may be sizing you guys up.
That might be a great way to meet women! Walk up to the urinal and ask for a step ladder. When asked why, you say that the urinal isn't low enough for you.
Police uncovered the scam almost by accident when they stopped Parsons for making an illegal u-turn in a car in London. They found a fake bank card in his possession and searched his home in Manchester, where they found the evidence with which to prosecute.
How does one know if it's a fake credit card? I have recieved cards from retailers for store credit that look like fake credit cards (Ikea). I assume that the fake credit cards look like the real thing. That's why when you go to Lowes, the cashier will ask to see the last four digits on your card. According to one of the clerks, Lowes has been a victim of phoney credit cards - theives will take a card and reprogram the magnetic strip on the back with a valid number.
Also, do the British police have that kind of power that they can just investgate all of that over just a traffic stop?
work. After all, the folks who are doing the "advertising" must be getting some sort of return.
Which leads me to wonder about the folks who actually believe that those penis enlargement pills work.
And as far as the "pump and dump" spam goes, are there folks who beleive those spams? Or are they of the mindset of the "greater sucker"? Meaning, if I buy this stock now, after this spam circulates, there will be others who buy this shit stock and push up the price allowing me to make money.
Yeah, I know the guy who originates the "buy" recomendation is hoping for everyone to buy the stock, but what makes some of the recipients think they'll make out?
Why do they have to fall into the catagory of "Good" or "Evil"? Can't there be a shade of gray?
I know of a few folks who were able to retire early because of their investments in MS stock back in the late 80's and early 90's. As far as they're concerned, MS is in the "Good" catagory.
And if they can use their market power to make PCs use less energy, I am for them - as long as they inform their users that they're doing it.
Just a thought - and I have had only one cup of coffee - so bare that in mind.;-)
They're professionals. They have, by law, the right to use force, including deadly force. They should be held at a much higher standard than everyone else. If they can't take the job without going nuts, then they should find other employment because, with actions like those cops (I saw on CBS this morning), the public will lose confidence in law enforcement. I can only imagine what the consquences would be.
But, again, I would also easily believe that there are lots of cases where it was justified.
Sorry, it is never justified when the police do it.
Proper spelling and grammar are unnatural constructs foisted upon the world by upper class tits that needed another way to make themselves feel special.
I looked at that sentence a few times and even looked some things up in "A Writer's Reference", Third Edition, by Diana Hacker. I don't see what the problem is with his grammar or spelling.
What is it?
And no, I'm not trying to slam you or anything; I am always trying to learn how to write and speak better.
Too few of us have broadband connections, and those who do pay too much for service that is too slow
That is becuase in many areas, there is only one (i.e. local monopoly), provider of broadband. In in some cases, those providers are telling their customers that they have to pay for their other services whether their customers want them or not. In other words, they're going to charge you an extra, say, $50 a month for service that may not even want.
Government regulation is usually good for businesses because it keeps the competition away and it helps comanies keep their prices high - broadband is a fine example of this.

Geeze, and people pick on MY reading comprehension!
Hmmm? Perdue U?!? Frank started a University?!? Wow!
God! you people are so full of your games! O'Reilly is absolutely righhhh.....

In fact, the scarcer oil seems, the higher the price goes, and the more money the oil companies make.
30% profit on $80/barrel is much more then 30% profit on $50/barrel.
