    > I realize Apple has Carbon (API??) to help the transition, and that's all good for big developers. But what about the small developer shops??

What makes Carbon only suitable for big developers? Its merely a subset of the MacOS API that will be compatible with MacOS X, if you write to Carbon, your apps will run on both MacOS 9 and MacOS X, and since its just a subset of the current MacOS API, all you potentially need to do is replace some of your system calls with ones that exist in Carbon.

  2. Re:Altivec-less? on Apple Moving To G5s Next Year? · · Score: 1

AltiVec seemed like a good idea in light of Intel adding MMX support to the Pentium. But its becoming apparent that most application developers aren't terribly interested in tuning their code those special instruction sets, and what really gets the most bang for the buck, across the board, is more generalized chip updates like more MHz and bigger caches.

Its just a case of living and learning IMO.

I concur in spades, Titan sucked because the characters and plot sucked, there was absolutely nothing to like about the movie except for the animation.

They could have at least given the evil aliens some personality so there was a reason to hate them, not giving them a voice made them more likeable than the hero IMO.

This may not be a win for Linux on the desktop but I think its a win for Linux overall. The more market penetration Linux gets (in any markets at this point) is less market share for Windows (and in this case Windows CE).

I don't think e*trade had all the shares (in fact I'm fairly certain they only get a smaller chunk). I would think the company thats underwriting the IPO would have access to all the shares, doling them out to its own customers first.

  11. Re:must've gone to lottery on "The Word" from E*Trade About the RH IPO · · Score: 1

Yeah, I just got the same message. I talked to an e*trade rep yesterday and from what I was told, the shares were alloted in groups of 100, meaning they did one pass through all applicants giving everyone 100. Then, if there were shares left, they made a second pass and gave anyone requesting more than 100 shares another batch of a hundred. Repeating the cycle until all the shares were doled out. I figured that under such a system I would be near a lock to get shares, but once again, I get screwed by the system.

    Dammit!

After reading the article, I got the feeling that the technology to read these penny cds is sort of far off from the mainstream consumer. I mean if scientists are using the technology now to push around atoms (which conjures up images of guys in labcoats in a room full of equipment), is it reasonable to expect that same technology to not only get cheap enough to mass produce, but also fit into a watch?

I've been burned by this same scenario, I tried to sign up for the priceline.com IPO on e*trade and was locked out for "incorrectly" answering the questionaire. What I'd like to know is why in the world do they have that questionaire instead of a simple legal form that says something along the lines of "I know this is a risky investment, I only hold myself liable for any losses incurred and really really promise not to sue if I get wiped out". Seems to me that type of form accomplishes the same goal, in a much more direct manner.

I like this strategy. Instead of trying to stretch themselves by developing and marketing new products, spend the money trying to get developers on board the BeOS chuck wagon.

IIRC, BeOS has some market penetration in the digital media area, seems like Be should try and sweet talk Adobe and Avid into supporting BeOS.

  21. Katmai vs. PowerPC on Pentium III (Katmai) on Monday? · · Score: 1

I've read the specs for both chips and there really isn't any comparison between Katmai and Motorola's upcoming G4 chips. Katmai is essentially a fix to what Intel broke when they added MMX, with minimal additions. The biggest speed gains from Katmai machines will be from the subsystems, not from the instructions.

But I'm sure Intel will convince the masses that Katmai is the greatest thing since the 386.
