Most people in the market for a new PC aren't going to know the difference between XP and Vista. A lot of the older generation also think that a PC is a one-time buy. They aren't going to go shopping for a new computer every few years. One of the older folks I do some work for (finally) decided to replace his aging Duron 733 from 7 or so years ago. I still know quite a few older folks with PCs older than that.

There isn't any reason for this share of the market to upgrade. Sure, they can advertise all they want; people still aren't going to buy it. It won't make a difference. My Mom wanted a new laptop and I told her to get it with XP as she uses some custom software... I didn't want to have to do compatibility testing on old software.

Not everyone will just jump on a new OS. Those that have likely have been burned once and will wait it out a bit. Once the buggy drivers are fixed, and your average cheap PC (sub-$500) can run Vista at a reasonable speed (currently Vista is slow on these PCs), then likely there will be more of a shift toward Vista.

Another big hit for Microsoft was the refusal of government and related agencies to use Vista. At some point they will allow it, but not anytime soon.

In a few years Vista may be mainstream, but it won't get there anytime soon. I didn't allow XP where I worked until a year and a half ago. Windows 2000 suited us just fine.

I for one do not have a problem with paying for monthly throughput (if I could get a reasonably priced 150GB package from Shaw I would) as I know I won't go over it. Other articles said in the US that some ISP was just cutting people off. Why? Make it clear what the caps are, and then throttle all traffic down if they go over the monthly limit. The problem for this to work is that they would have to have several bandwidth packages ranging for individual needs. Instead of just saying "you can do 100GB, but not with p2p" give the consumer a choice of package with no restrictions on the line. It's not perfect, and most ISPs are just too damn lazy to upgrade/change to deal with it.

Cars DO have different characteristics depending on what road they are on. Why do you think handling is one of the points in car reviews? Hmm? You can't take a sports car up the mountain, it'll fall apart. It _can't_ do it. Normal cars with normal ride height can go up the mountain roads. There's usually a few areas (at least around here) that a sports car can't pass, where a normal car or truck can.

Honestly, this likely doesn't relate that well, but you have 5 Vista cars:
-Home Basic (some rusty old truck from the 80s)
-Home Premium (a slightly newer truck)
    -Business (an older car)
    -Enterprise (a newer car)
    -Ultimate (a sports car)

Now, a someone newer machine barely meeting the minimum requirements is a mountain. Which ones are likely going to work? Ultimate won't, period. The others will probably work just fine but struggle.

Honestly, I don't care about Microsoft's advertising. All that's going to happen is they are going to slap a disclaimer in fine print saying it'll run Home Basic only with no Aero interface (or does Home Basic even have the Aero interface?)

I would say you don't understand cars either; this is precisely the reason that some cars are to be run on the track only. These track cars are designed specifically for the track and not run on the street as they would be unsafe.
